You wanna do a knockout, you need to make sure that areas of color overlap by doing a "choke" or a "spread". In the case of type, a choke.

Convert a copy of the type to paths. Take the "type path" and the box and unite them to create a box with a text shaped hole in it. Stroke the box the same color as the fill, try 0.25 point. This way, yellow will overlap with the type and if there's any slippage on the printing press there won'be be any white space between the letters and the box.

If you're talking about a large headline, your choke can be thicker, but unless the type color is dark i would be conservative.

Welcome ecaf3y3!.
Just curious. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but wouldn't it just be easier to add a stroke to the type? That way it stays editable too.

Hell of a first post! I can remember when we used to have to do our chokes and spreads on a big overhead vacuum table, on film, blast with the light (at a certain number of seconds, depending) onto a new piece of film, shooting through a few sheets of clear acetate (also depending, heh.) Anyone else remember those days? In many ways it was easier than doing it with a computer, you could visiualize in your head exactly what was going to happen, and it did!
