Yep... if you want free and banner-less... go wtih f2s... they aren't all that bad.

Someone is going to say this eventually in the thread... and I get tired of hearing it.... so I'm going to say it instead....

You get what you pay for.

I thought the same thing when I read this post the first time, and refrained from saying it because like you, I knew somebody eventually would.

Glad to see you took the bull by the horns.

Well blue,
and not until recently did I *actually* realize this...
but $150 through dreamhost isn't gonna break ya for a year. Besides... it'll light a fire under your ass, knowing that you are paying for that web space.... you're going to *want* to make the most of it...

$150 don't getcha the rampant CGI thing tho. You'll get PHP and a few canned CGI scripts (formail, mailinglist...) but it's $250 for full CGI

sounds good. but $250 seems like a lot. especially for someone with no job. i don't really know if i'd use full cgi though. i'll probably use dreamhost after i find a source of income.

Let's don't forget that DreamHost started to suck big time lately and we experienced that here in the Asylum. So, IMO it isn't worth that money...

Sweet Dreams -
$250 gets you 125 megs for a year, 17 pop3 (or 15?), CGI, 5 sub-domains, and a few other things

something like that

i don't have any compliants yet, but they have been giving Doc the run-around lately

125 megs for a year? so after the year you have to pay another fee to keep the space, right? sounds kinda expensive...

Your not paying for just the space. And you can pay monthly, which is more expensive in the long run.

Keep shopping.

yea, i went to the dreamhost website and saw a bunch of monthly deals. i couldn't find anything based on annual payments. in the meantime, i'll wait till f2s.com is accepting new accounts. seems like the best way to go right now.

honestly, how much space do you need? the largest site i have looks to be less than 10 megs, thanks to php. i cant think of any reason why youd need 125+ megs unless youre running something like ubb instead of running a sql database.

blue - you may have only seen the monthly rates at dreamhost... however... if you pay in full at the start, depending on the plan that you get... sometimes they give you 30MB extra storage...

I host my domain on webdot.net - $7.00/mo for 70 MB, 14 e-mail boxes, and you can schedule your own backup/restore (!!!) no setup fee-crap, and they know how to transfer domian names like nobody's business. They host java servlets too! - don't think they do database - i KNOW they don't do PHP, but I'm a perl guy, anyway. I'd recommend them if you can live with just that.

Something bugging me is they charge $25 EXTRA for turning off directory listings - THAT was a big WTF for me... It was my first domain host, but I'll probably let it expire and go somewhere else.

Blue, if you go to the info page for any of the plans at DreamHost, there's a table at the bottom listing the rates for 12 months, 6 months and 1 month.

For example, for the Crazy Domain Insane Plan, it's $12.49 a month. But, if you pay for 12 months it's $119.40, which comes out to $9.95 a month (the price they list).

I'm using webstrikesolutions.com, which has Perl5 and PHP, and most of the things you'd want from Apache turned on (not indexes). No shell access at all, runs on RedHat Linux (seems to be up a lot) and gives me free POP mail (lots of mailboxes) and runs primary DNS for my domain.

First year was free, with a $30 one-time setup fee. I think it's $8 or $9 /month after the first year.

But I found them using http://www.hostsearch.com/ . You specify what you want, and what you want to pay, and it gives you companies that meet your needs.

I've been pretty happy. Uptime has been high, not 100%, but probably 99%, I don't have any way to judge.

They get a 9.6 feedback rating on hostsearch's feedback page, with 88 votes, so that should tell you sumthin' about the quality. Tech support is good, they allocate a contact to you so you don't get a random human each time.

Hmm, for a good average, the entire OZONE site fits inside 98MB. The Asylum is a pig, and eats 50-75MB all by itself. Most of my sites would fit inside the 10MB La'D mentioned. Dreamhost has been crashing for me a lot lately, but I monitor 3 different accounts there, and to be fair to them it seems to only be *my* server that's been having problems, sigh. Pugzly! Why don't you post a rate sheet for Asylum users here? Much as I'd like to get the referrers to my dreamhost account (same username as here! =) I'd feel even better knowing you were getting the business. Steal someone elses rate sheet, add a few features (maybe CGIwrap for safe CGI usage) and start singing folks up. Lemme know what you come up with.

domains, domains, domains and servers. Fuck the f2s! Git ahn board!

My server? I host almost all of my clients in addition to any of the experimentation that I do..So I'm soaking probably 250 megs or so on my server. A healthy chunk, to say the least. I guess it all depends on what you're doing.

OK, let me turn this around:

I'd be willing to consult and do tech support for Apache/BIND/Sendmail/PHP/MySQL in exchange for someone allowing me to host a low-volume web site on their *NIX server. I would require shell access (SSH) and would strongly prefer MySQL and PHP4. Anybody up for that?

I run a dozen or so boxes at work, and know my way around *NIX pretty well, so I could help someone getting started, or help an existing hosting provider with security and reliability at the OS and httpd level. I'd like to do a personal tech-oriented blog, but I need it to stay off my company's infrastructure completely.
