OK, I know this probably belongs in Career Talk but who actually goes in there?

My question is what kind of plan of action would you recommend to someone who wants to get into professional web development?

I already have a 4 year degree from Kansas State University in Secondary Education Chemistry/Physics so I have a strong physics, math, and science background. What would any of you recommend as far as giving myself a basic coding background so that a corporation would take me in a train me in asp, php, or whatever other kind of language they happen to use? All I know to this point I have taught myself.

Grassy-ass in advance for your advice.

web development...that's a loaded phrase.

If you're planning on being your own, self-sufficient web development "firm" I'd suggest getting as much as you can in as many fields as you can--then develop partnerships with as many people as you can to develop the parts that you don't know.

Good place to start is go into a Barnes and Noble store and sit down and read everything that they have on web development in the areas of CGI, SQL, Perl, XML and any others you can find. DOn't worry, I have no idea how B&N makes money--they let you just sit in comfy chairs and read as long as you want.

But seriously, if you want to get *hired* by a web development firm, specialize in some aspect. Pick front end vs. back end, then pick specialization from there; front end is anything graphical- or layout-oriented, back end is anything that controls databased, programming scripts, or anything else like that..."technical" crap.

Dunno if that helps at all.
