I'm going through a lot of s**t right now and the only thing I've got going is the one holiday I don't hate. Whatever you eat tomorrow, choke down a bite for me, eh?

My wife eats eggs, and drinks milk, but does not eat fish. However that is her choice. Many vegitarians will eat fish, eggs, and milk. You can take this to an extreme and become a vegan, that is a person that eats no animal products.

Now before you become PETA milltant and start talking about how we need to stop making clothes from animals and such, please be aware of folks like me. I'm allergic to many types of man-made products that are designed to replace animal products. Some of those man-made products can kill me. Groups like PETA really piss me off! I'm supposed to die to save a cow? I don't think so. I'm all for treating animals well, but not at my expense. PETA is an ill-informed group lead by blind eyed moon brained fools. It's a group that could have done some good, but instead chooses to hurt and demean there own actions. This is kind of a sore spot with me, since it's my health and my life.

yeah.. PETA is a bunch of fascists if you ask me. i've got a few friends who support PETA and do protests and stuff though, to each their own i guess.

traditional vegetarianism is technically called "lacto-ovo vegetarian." what that means is you consume milk and UNfertilized eggs, but no fish/chicken/cow/horse/goat/blah or whatever.

i personally have a little bit of a problem with people that say "i'm a vegetarian, but i eat fish and/or chicken." that's not vegetarian, that's just limiting some of your animal consumption. oohhhh but i myself wear a leather jacket and boots and a few other dead animal clothes, so i'm not that much better.

don't worry though, i don't think i'll be eating tofurkey today.. probably make myself some pasta or whatever for dinner, yeehaw.

On a side note me and my friend have set a goal of living in a different country by one year, so this should be my last "turkey vendetta day" (as omera so perfectly put it) in a while. *prays*

Seriously, vegatarians feel animals deserve to live just as much as humans but have no problem eatting plants. I mean plants might not move but they do live right? They need food and water, proper conditions and so forth. Also a lot of them as Mikey proved wear animals. I dunno I like to believe in the food chain, where the stronger and more intelligant species dominates, and it just happens to be us so why fight it?

"I'm not vegitarian because I love animals, I'm vegitarian because I hate plants."

I know a lot of people who don't eat meat not because they don't think its "right" but because they don't think the standard american way of getting the meat to the market is "right." For instance one of the main reasons the rainforests gets chopped down is to provide grazing land for cows for export to american(most of which go to places like McDonalds etc). Another reason is that most meat is hormone treated(same with lots of veggies). Chickens live in really bad conditions, tuna kills dolphins, veal "products" never get to walk around...

Another reason is that everytime you go up the food chain you lose 90% of energy. So it takes 100 pounds of grain to get 10 pounds of beef.

Anyway I had a nice thanksgiving, got to talk to my brother in the slammer, which was nice, got to eat my mothers scrumplous(good?) apple pie, and lived another day, hope you all had equally fullfilling experiences(I'll bet the meat eaters had more fullfilling time though haha).

ehmm OpticBurn?

How do you classify eating meat as social?
Do all vegetarians eat alone?

The part about the raw meat is rather irrelevant. Since mankind learned to use fire we've cooked all kinds of food. How many veggies eat their food raw?

If you look at things in an evolutionary and genetic perspective, we're closely related to both pigs and chimps, and both of those species eat meat *and* vegetables. So have we since the days of Lucy...

I agree with F1 on this. I've also got the allergic issue with a bunch of the "brand new and extra juicy meat replacements"

BTW
Steak tartar is raw meat last I checked and that is *really* tasty

I say let people decide their menus themselves. Some will be fat others thin, some veggies others not. Just do not argue that we were not *made* to eat anything but grass...

god i really wish i would have let this slip by....

jestah:

"vegatarians feel animals deserve to live just as much as humans but have no problem eatting plants."

the eating plant argument is irrelevant. plants do not possess the same ability to perceive and sense pain like animals do... and if one were really so concerned about plants getting hurt, then they'd surely realize by eating just plants they were actually saving plants; because instead of resorting to meat which takes a lot more plants to plump up for human consumption, they were eating the minimum amount required to sustain themselves.

"a lot of them as Mikey proved wear animals."

i didn't prove anything, i spoke for myself solely. obviously the "atypical" vegetarian does NOT wear animals because i make it a point to state my obvious discomfort for wearing leather myself. i get hit by this question from both omnivores and vegetarians all the time, "just how exactly do you justify wearing dead animals?" well since it's my life and i'm living by my own guidelines, it's super simple... but if you want some sort of justification, how about i can get clothing goods from an animal after they've lived their whole life... whereas someone eating an animal just slaughters the thing for an instant gratification in the form of a meal.

nimraw:

"how do you classify eating meat as social do all vegetarians eat alone?"

i'll go out on a limb here and try to field this question in my own interpretation. there are a lot of things that humans do that are not natural instinctively, instead it is garned from the society around them. in other words, humans continue to eat meat when it's not necessary because it's a habit that has been ingrained into the world around them. kind of like the mentality "everyone's doing it, so why shouldn't i?" meat isn't the only example either, people are so foolishly driven by a popular image or concept... americans especially. our social system demands that people use things like deoderant and perfume to cover up their natural smell, companies run ads for razors that make people feel it's bad for them to let their hair grow like it does naturally... you're a monster if you're a girl that doesn't shave your legs and arms, let alone your arm pits.

so yes, that's my interpretation of the roots of social ideals.

and finally:

i'm glad that i can live my life free of consuming dead animals, but that's all i can really worry about and control in the end... my life. so for everyone out there eating meat, more power to you. for all the veg-heads, rock on..

it's your own fucking life though, just don't make it mine, hehe.

I say its social because I don't think much of anything we do anymore is instinictual but social, which is to say we do it because have always done it, and everyone else does it. Steak tartar is ground up small and is an appetizer, try eating an entire meal of raw meat, un-cooked, unsliced. Not only will your jaw fall off because your teeth aren't meant to eat meat(we grind, not rip, and don't ever let anyone talk to you about your so called "canines," because those don't do anything), but you will probably be violently ill afterwards.

I don't really care though, and if you were talking to me, I *never* came close to telling anyone how to live their lives, neither did mikey, I'm just presenting a viewpoint that isn't often exposed.

On a side note, as mikey was saying, I think its funny when people give me shit for having piercings(i got large guage stuff and one in my hand), but don't have any problems with people getting liposuction, breast implants, nose jobs, etc etc. Those are extremely costly, hugely invasive radical surguries, but socially acceptable because they aren't openly visible.

ANYWAY, I am thankful I live in a country where it is legal to save all your money, and then emmigrate.

I was not aiming this really at either one of you. The social comment thing was more of a sarcastic semantic joke.

I just felt the need to blow off some steam after a few really shitty days at work, and sorry to say, I did it in here...

Of course everything we do or don't do comes from evolution and social standards. That's one thing I definately won't argue with.

I know neither of you told me how to live my life, but I don't think I did that to you guys either. I just sometimes get frustrated at the point saying that we were not made to eat meat. I've got a few hard core vegan friends who does not even argue that fact. They made a choice. That does not mean that I've not made a (Passive) choice to some extent to eat meat, or that I accept how animals are treated. OK I want to barbecue them, but I want them to have a reasonable life up to that point. Besides, having family in the northern part of Sweden I mostly eat Moose-meat. They have a pretty good life until someone shoots them. And the reason we've got to shoot them?
Some idiots killed off all the natural predators in our fauna (think we've got like 50 wolves left).

enough rambling. I wont post againg until I've settled down.. I need technicolor pills by the gallon

Besides, so much of what we do we aren't built to do, but do every day of our lives, that even saying we aren't meant to do something has only a small value in any sort of argument for or against something. Did i get enough "do's" in that sentance?

I don't have too much to add to this thread, I eat meat becuase I like the taste, and believe that it provides me a more balanced nutrition. Being a vegan is *complicated*, you have to track down all the proper nutrients, eating a huge variety of different plants and such. Most of the "hobby" vegetarians I've known tried eating nothing but salad and rice, and eventually became unhealthy, they were missing too many trace elements. Me, I let the other animals run around and eat a good variety, and eventually it all filters into me! My choice.

And I'm a bit lazy, heh.

Speaking of drinking beer, I found the best bar in Fort Worth last night. Just wish I could remember the name... something about a dog. But, it's the first real *bar* I've been to in a long time. Not a sports bar, not a cocktail bar, not a "we serve over 500 beers" bar...just a place to sit on a stool and yack and enjoy a refreshing draught. Helped to drown a few of my sorrows.

Come to think of it, perhaps some of the D/FW inmates would like to get together there one weekend. As soon as I can remember the name...
