I've been using FTPexplorer forever and I don't think it will work from behind a firewall.

Can anyone make recommendations? I'm on NT4 by the way

wierd. I use Cute too. I've been a big fan for a while though I do know a lot of people using ws_ftp

transit is great for the Mac.

P.S. I don't know why you firewall would block a particular client. Usually these block ports, if you are having trouble you may have the default ftp port blocked (21 I think) which would prevent any client from working

PPS . When in doubt try the default windows ftp client. from the command line navigate to the folder you want to upload and download files to and type
ftp www.wherever.com

It should connect and prompt for a username and password
then to list the files: ls
change directory: cd
get things: get filename.ext
post things: put filename.ext

Does anyone know how to change the directory of the machine you are on using this method?

I've been using AceFTP on Phil's recommendation a while ago. Actually, you might find it helpful to look that thread up, I originally posted it in the Ozone forum. Try searching for it, it might help.

I use WS FTP. Have used it forever. I like it better than BulletProof FTP. Can compare it with much else, those are about the only 2 I have used.

I use cuteFTP and I have to check the "use PASV mode" and "use firewall settings" to get it to work behind some firewalls. It's worth a try.

bitdamaged, I believe you type "lcd" for "local change directory" on the ftp program that comes with windows.

I find the ftp client built into dreamweaver 4 ultradev to work pretty well, otherwise i'm a fan of the command prompt or just windows explorer...

I've got WS and Cute around here somewheres, I'll check 'em both. thanks all

Bit - it's not blocking my client, the client was not fully developed for use with firewalls, I never even noticed before. Just got hooked on it and never changed, first thing syndrome.

CuteFTP works very well, and doesn't mess up ASCII and BINARY transfers when it is set to automatically select transfer type.

Cute is far superior to WS_FTP. I like that it will keep a connection alive. I don't like that can't set the default remote directory like you can with WS_FTP (by just clicking a button).

Heh, I've got 2 or 3 different FTP softwares registered and paid for, and hate them, mostly. On the mac we have "Netfinder", which integrates into the desktop perfectly with the same style windows, transfers are easy as drag and rop, with no moving around at all, I miss that ease of use on windows. Lately I've needed to start using SSH and SFTP for secure tranfers to our isolated machine, and for this I've been using SecureFX from VanDyke. Now I use it for all of my FTP transfers, it's an old-fashioned metaphor (everything lives in it's own "Window", but it's fast and sleek.

Pugz,

You can set the default remote directory in Cute If you go into the site settings (F4) and select Edit you can select both the default remote and local directories for each site.

This is also where the PASV and firewall settings are.

This is for Cute 4.2.2
I just upgraded to this version, older versions had a totally different Site settings panel, however I know it could be set in there as well.

I have an account at ftp.crosswinds.net and I cant find any FTP client that will connect to the server. All i get is the User and password prompts and then the client displays "connecting" and never connects. I'm looking for other FTP clients that'll work and other free servers (crosswinds.net offers unlimited space -- thats what they say). Recommendations anyone? I find the space at geocities limited.

Here's two more major probs I cant solve

1. I got an online "drive" at Driveway and XDrive and cant figure a way to resume downloads (dont know the URLS of the files I'm downloading). How do i work around this? Support doesnt seem to reply.

2. Is there any way of resuming uploads? The only alternative I see is to split the file.
