As part of my new web site (which will be finished soon), I wanted to have a portal-like page with links from various sources (actually, only from those that generate RSS/RDF files). Anyway, in the past few days, I was developing my own PERL script that will fetch & parse RSS/RDF backend files on specified time interval (I had to make my own XML Shallow Parsing perl module, because I wasn't able to use Expat). Finally, I've finished it today, and made a demo page to show it off. You can see it in action here: http://www.max.co.yu/news/ (news are updated on every three hours; click on the links at the lower left to open news windows). Output of PERL script is included in page using SSI. Also, that page is viewable in IE5.5 and NS6 only (it is using DHTML script from BrainJar to implement scrollable windows). You can also see raw output that is generated by PERL script here: http://www.max.co.yu/cgi-bin/news/news.pl?source=newsforge (as you can see you can specify news source).

That should be all... I would like to hear your comments! Also, do you have any suggestions regarding what news sites to include (my PERL script currently support following: freshmeat, slashdot, thinkgeek, mozilla, mozillazine, neoflux, geeknik, geekpress, geekissues, geeknews, newsforge, weatherpaper, phpbuilder, dotcomma, massless, javascript, kuro5hin, linuxcom, apachetoday, linuxtoday)

I was about to complain about how I got the message even though I do have IE5.5
But then I realized I have not upgraded since I changed computer.

As for your page I think it looks ok. The little images are awfully pixelated though.

Ahhhhhhh! Let me clarify this... I wrote a universal script that fetches & parses RSS/RDF backend files (take a look at W3C's and Shitscape's web sites for more info) from news posting sites and I have to test it somehow, get it? Right. In order to test it I've created that demo/test/debug/whatever page and it was using advanced DHTML/CSS techniques so that I can include a couple of news sources at the same time. Anyway, since there are some of you how don't use latest browsers yet, I've made another simpler test page (on this page you have a combobox at the end to choose what news to display and that's also a list of all currently supported news sites by my script). So, the links are now:

http://www.max.co.yu/news/ (new simpler test page)
http://www.max.co.yu/news/index2.shtml (old DHTML page)

The bottom line - I'm not asking for your opinions about design of that page (it is only a demo/test/debug/whatever page, the real page will be completely different and cross-browser compatible). I'm asking you to test if script generates *normal* pages (by normal I mean that it doesn't output some junk instead of news - you know shit happens, espcially because my script is universal/generic by nature). Also, If you have some favorite news posting site that currently isn't included, please tell! And last but not least, do you people read news from web at all? Oh, almost forgot - if anyone is interested in using that script, I can make it available (it will work on almost every server with support for CGI/PERL and it doesn't require any non-standard perl modules)...

Beeing on Internet is upgrading. Since the browsers do not have time to upgrade for the people.

well, on the DHTML page I can still only see those two images, and a bunch of links in the bottom right corner. Nothing else.
On the new page I can see a list of news items. Looks ok to me, nothing strange. And the links at the bottom seems to work just fine. Or at least the one I tried...

Mr. Max!

This will be the first reply that actually addresses your post Yes, the news seems to be working just fine. I'm not getting any crap and the links all seem to go to the external news sites and the correct articles.

I was just wondering... wouldn't it be cool if I could use this to pump news into my new dHtml windows on my site? I would like to include the Doc Javascript headlines. What do I need to do to give it a try?

Great work!!!

Max, I would *love* get a peek at this script, it seems like it could intersect with my business plan, too! Please, let me peek under the hood? <g> Max, I like the behaviours on your windows better now! How about adding the onDblClick (syntax?) handler for browsers that understand it? Double click on the window drag bars should open and close them too.

Your pal, -doc-

Doc, yes I was going to ask you about how Max's script related to your news idea. This could be the start of a beautiful relationship.
