It's a liberated, accessible css world. Don't specify type size - let the viewer adjust their browser default font.

Hey Steve

Do you really think you can build and code most web pages, test them in the popular browsers, let the user pick font size and attributes, and have to page look as it should?

I'm not debating you, I would like to know your thoughts.

Hmm, I'm torn, really I am. I like the 10px font, I use it a lot, all over the place. Still, the 11px font was nice, I got used to it. Now, what am I supposed to do with CSS that will really let people choose their font size, yet still not look bloody stupid to folks who don't do that? I may just bump it back up to 11px, seems best and fairest to all the other old farts, like me.

I don't know *what* I think anymore. But this article was in my mind when I posted that bombshell:
http://www.alistapart.com/stories/dao/

Can it be done? Sure. Do we have to let go of a lot of things (like control over what it looks like)? You bet. Is it a good thing? Depends on a lot of complicated factors.

So, I don't know what to think any more.

I did read one funny thing. It was in a sort of generic booklet for printers. In the section on web deesign they were discussing the difference of type size in mac vs. PC displays; the comment was made that a design which looks good on a PC might be unreadably small on a Mac. But if you have to choose, design for the PC because Mac users are more likely to know that they can change the font display in their browser!

Oh yeah. I'll bet it's true! hee hee

Steve:

Damn, does he draw a great picture with his words or what!

Great article Steve. It really makes you want to rethink how we approach designing for the web. I can see why you said you don't know what to think. After reading that, I feel I should be able to sit in a corner, contemplate about media of the past and it's progressions, strip away whatever is not needed on the web, and go forward into this great new medium. While it's an exciting thought, it leaves me in a giant vacuum for direction.... Did I mention that I hate to have to think that much?

I wish you had a more concrete answer to my question, but I understand the fact that you don't.

edit:

Oh yea!!!
From one old fart to another, thanks for the font change Doc

I've just conceded another button on me toolbar, the font-size one. I run a bare minimum of browser window usually so this ain't a decision made lightly but with the prevalence of 10px verdana all over the web now, in tandem with my 1600x1200 resolution or more, it gets hard on the eyes after 10 hours of reading online documentation and the like.

I always assumed that Mac heads were more computer literate too, until I met a few. A lot more institutions are going Mac and that means that the people that work there get a MAc instead of a PC, they don't necissarily know much about either one.

actually, I think that you can have different style selectable from a drop-down option box, then you could store it in the user's computer just as easily as that cookie that saves your name and password.

People could custimize a style and it would appear in the drop-down box thru the magic of either Perl or Javascript.

Would that work?

Just a thought...

I know I've read something like that recently,(the dropdown choose your style sheet thingy) but I think only, (and I hate to say this) certain browsers on a Mac support it.

I have enough trouble designing for what is, let alone what could be!

No, it can work universally. You set a cookie on the client that records preferences, and then build the stylesheet dynamically. Hell, in IE, you can even tweak CSS values after the document loads.

Care to elaborate on that one(the tweaking after page loads). I was just trying to work out one of your ideas along those lines recently. I had the default CSS page and a print CSS page both linked via Media=. Is there a way to change the way the page looks on screen, (i.e., stacked layers to stream for print with CSS) without reloading the page?
