I'm looking at getting a new desktop and have stuff kinda nailed down but was hoping I'd get a good link out of you guys for monitors.

I've grown to like the 19" and 21" flat Trinitrons so I'm looking for something comparable, just kinda price shopping.

thanks for any help atall

Well, I haven't been in the market for a new monitor for a while now but I am *very* satisfied with my 19" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 900u.

Here's the closest thing I see at outpost.com

Anything from ViewSonic is a good deal. I've been really happy with my A90 monitors. I'm thinking about their flatscreen.

I don't like the trinitron screens because they have those damned black lines in them. It's distracting.

definitely the NEC, as pugz said...i've got my two 20" viewsonics together and the only thing i'd be happier with is maybe three or four of them together...plus isn't NEC cheaper than Sony?

I have a 19" Sony Trinitron that I totally love. Its got a built in 4-port USB hub as well.

Wead has a dual-monitor set up with the same type of monitors and I envy the bastard.

I don't like the Sony monitors. Period. Bring up an all white screen, and you can see two VERY thin lines that run side to side, one about 1/3 of the way down the screen, and another about 2/3. Those things just drive me bananas!

I'm not big on NEC's either. We dumped dozens of them because of quality problems. Let's not forget that NEC owns the now-defunct Packard Bell - home of a 47% hardward failure rate!

FWIW?!?! That's a badass monitor there Stevie. :P I'm sure I can't afford it. Thanks for the monitors everybody, the Mitsubishis and Viewsonics look real nice, cheaper and smaller footprints too.

I'm a little confused, I gotta talk to my accountant. I figger If I keep doing freelance design in the evenings at the rate I'm going I could turn my current home desktop into a fileserver/family webserver and get a new computer to write off as a business expense. That would be sweet, free computers! I could take the 19" Trinitron from this computer and pair it with another 19" on my new computer and get a cheap 17" for this computer. Now if I could just rob some RAM outta this old one...

Another question, this current computer has 1 DIMM, 256MB of SDRAM, this is not compatible with PC800 RDRAM is it? What I know about hardware would fill a thimble.

RDRAM is a whole 'nother species. You actually have to fill all the RIMM slots and memory has to be installed in pairs ( like the good old SIMMS). If you have 4 RIMM slots, and you wanted 128 M of memory, you'd need two 64 M RIMMs and two CRIMMs for the empty slots. It's a bit complicated, but the performance benchmarks are pretty impressive.

edit: You also have to have a particular motherboard which supports RDRAM.

check them out!

I have a sony trinitron, cleanest picture you'll ever get, only side effect as you know is the wires in the monitor leave a couple of shadows on the screen. Next best is mitsubishi, followed by viewsonic.

good luck

I've got a Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 91 and it's absolutely gorgeous, I actually prefer it over the Trinitrons (one of my partners has one I use regularly, and I had a Trinitron at my old job before I blew it, which was actually kinda cool ). I'm assuming the one Bugimus posted is the most recent model of mine, and for the price I'd highly recommend it. I've heard a few good things about some NECs but the ones I've looked at recently haven't really impressed me.

And just FYI, I write everything off. Monitor, software, books, etc., I use it all for business in some way or another (even moreso now that I'm freelancing). My accountant, whose day job is managing tax returns for a large accounting firm, has no prob with that.
