It's been a while since the original, but I spent the day making five separate sound files, which were combined with the movie for pretty realistic and cool sound. Check it out (1.7 MB). Please don't click the link hundreds of times, I'm slightly worried about the bandwidth this will take if many people download it.

I probably should have posted in the multimedia forum, but I really wanted everyone to see this. =) I *love* the way it came out.

slime, you rock!
i guess its not open source. otherwise i'd be very glad if i could have a look at the code.
what im most interested in is how did you make the saber-effects. do they have a light source?

and where is the light in the scene coming from? the two have shadows, but i see no lamp or something.

That is too cool.

Now I'm starting to see re-enactments of other movie scenes with slimies. Bunch of slimies running through the woods, coming over the hill, with O Fortuna in the background...

Wow Slime! It's been a long time since I've seen that. The sounded you added was amazing. Did you have any sound in the original? It's been a while, I don't remember.

I got the music off the DuelOfTheFates MP3 (it's all over the internet). The saber sounds took a while to find, but eventually I found three zip files of about fifty sound files. I made four of my own sound files: one containing ambient light saber sounds, one containing heavier light saber sounds when the sabers move, one containing sounds of the sabers turning on and off, and one containing sounds of the light sabers clashing. Then I mixed it all together with the music (which is the last thirty seconds of Duel Of The Fates). It took a while to sync all the sound effects.

There was no sound in the original, Jestah, I did all the sound yesterday. =)

Of course, I used POV-Ray for the images, back when I made this thing (about a year and a half ago, if I remember correctly). I had written a VB program to animate it with, and then took two days to animate it. Then it rendered over the course of a couple of weeks. (much of that time was spent waiting for a new, faster family computer to render it with.) Originally I compiled the frames with CMPEG, but since that doesn't support sound, I used TMPGEnc yesterday to put the sound into it. I still have all 623 targa files that are the individual frames. =)

The light source? first of all, the light sabers themselves are light sources -- area lights, for those who use POV-Ray and know what area lights are. =) Then there are two light sources, if I remember correctly, in the middle of the room. Only one of them casts shadows, the other one just keeps the dark areas lit up a bit.

One interesting problem that I had with the sound is the fact that the light saber sounds in the new and old movies are very different, believe it or not. In the newer movie, they sound more metallic, sort of. It's strange.

Thanks for all the compliments =)

Ooooh...nice.

talking about combining targas into movies, I have a question that I'm gonna throw to the general population. I have a 101 frame animation which I rendered into 101 seperate targa images. How do I:

  1. Compile these into a movie file, and
  2. Convert that movie file to a reasonable gif file to display as a sig?

Any ideas?

Drop the animated GIF idea. With 101 frames, that'd be one huge file. But for an animation... search for BMP2AVI on google or something, you'll find a program that can convert bitmaps or targa files into avi videos.
