Well, for the time being, at least. I submitted my MA thesis today, and now await my examination (sometime during the third week of this month). During the examination my professors will each take turns tearing me new orifices, after which I will attempt to patch up my thesis (and myself) and submit it for the final time. Then I will officially be a scholar.

It sure feels good to have gotten this far, though.

Very very cool man. One of these days I'll go back to school and maybe get as far as you've gotten. For me, life took many other turns. You have my admiration for the drive and determination it took you to get to that point.

Great Job Suho! I got to the part of my MA where I was working on my thesis for submittal and just had enough.

Do you have to take an oral comprehensive or anything like that? I don't know how they do their studies in Korea.

Congratulations again!!!!

Thanks, guys. And especially to Mahjqa for that jumping Mr. Hankey (or at least what looks like a jumping Mr. Hankey) .

CPrompt: I'm not sure what an oral comprehensive is... here's what I still have to do: my profs will read over my thesis for the next two weeks and then I will spend about an hour in front of them as they pick it apart. I will be given final recommendations for fixing it up and they'll decide whether I get my MA or not. The last is kind of a given at this point--it usually doesn't get this far if they're not going to pass you (there were two presentations before this, and one of my friends gave up after she got torn apart at the second presentation). I'm not sure if the examination is an oral comprehensive, but that's how it works here.

[Edit: By the way, in case you hadn't figured it out already, everyone here at the Asylum helped in keeping me sane while I was writing the thesis and getting ready for presentations and what not. It was nice to just pop in when I needed a break. So thanks for being such nifty people. ]

Suho, that is kind of the way it worked for me. About the Oral Comps, here is what we would have to do (I studied music btw).

We would give our Grad. recital, write a thesis and then the profs would do the same with our thesis as they did with yours. Then there was 4 people on my "committee" that would review my recital and then my thesis. These people would *then* give us one question each that we would have 2 weeks to research a then in a classroom I would have to give a presentation on these questions answers.

It was kind of like one of those "gangster" movies when the criminal would site in a room with the light on him. . . kind of scary realy.

Anyway, congrats on a job well done!

(Mr. Hankey?? I always thought it looked like an appendix )

CPrompt: Oh, I see. That's a bit different from the way it works here--we don't have that final presentation. On the other hand, I do have to answer on the spot all the questions the profs pose. So I've got to be prepared for any questions they might ask.

Slap a hat on him, make him a little darker, and you've got Mr. Hankey. I have no idea what the worm game is that WS mentioned.

Krets: I believe Mr. Hankey would be extremely offended at being called a mere "pile of poo."

Just an update... I had my thesis examination today.

First of all, the timing couldn't have been better. Everyone is still talking about Korea's win over Italy, and my professors were all in a very good mood. (I'm noticing that it's a tad difficult to write; that may have something to do with the fact that I'm a tad drunk now, so please understand....) Anyway, they basically said, "You did a good job on the thesis, we just have a few things to mention." And that was it. So I've now officially passed my examination and received my seoksa (my MA).

So, in order to celebrate, I went out this evening with two of my friends (one senior, one junior). We had hoe (sashimi) for dinner, and it was quite good. They even had the squirming octopi that I mentioned in my sushi thread. Of course, I was paying for all of it. I can't remember how it works in other countries, but in Korea, whenever something good happens to someone they treat everyone else. So I was treating.

For 2 cha we went to a place called 'Led Zeppelin.' This is funny because my senior kept saying we were going to 'Red Zeppelin,' and I said, "You mean 'Led Zeppelin,'" and he said, "Oh, there's a difference?" Well, it was funny at the time, at least. The drinks are kind of expensive there, primarily because the waitresses come out and actually sit down at the table and talk with you. It's not like one of those room salons (don't know if they have these in the West) where the girls come in and, um, provide more intimate service. Just talking. The first girl we had was a big football fan, and we were all pretty impressed because she knew a lot about the sport. So we spent the time talking about the World Cup, and I found out she was also at city hall last night cheering the team on. I guess with a half million people out it's easy to miss someone. Unfortunately, the second girl who came out knew nothing about sports and was not all that great a conversationalist.

Hmm... reading back over this post I realize two things: 1) I am apparently a lot more hammered than I thought I was, and 2) most of you are probably going to think I'm a freak because of that last paragraph. It's an Asian thing, that's all I can say. Anyway, the point is that I now officially have my MA. You understand how I might want to go out and celebrate a little, right?

No need for congratulatory messages. Just wanted to let you all know how things turned out. I'd better drink some water and get to bed now.

Well, thanks guys. I woke up this morning thinking, "Oh my, what did I post on the Asylum last night?" Glad to see most of you ignored the stupid parts.

How old am I? Well, in Korean age I'm already 30, but actually I'm still in my twenties (29).

And my thesis was a comparative study of the Winnebago trickster, Wakdjunkaga, and the Korean rabbit in Sugungga. For some reason my professors think I'm going to translate it into English, but I currently have no plans to do so. I figure I'm going to have to translate my PhD thesis anyway, so I might as well just wait until then.

Oh, and there will definitely be a week-long party in my cell, but I think I'll hold off on the polar beer for a while. I had way too many bottles of Hite Stout last night (yes, they finally make a stout here--it ain't Guinness, but it's better than nothing).

Hmm... and although I had not originally thought of it, Master Suho does have a nice ring to it...
