Just had to share -

My 7year old daughter has been taking Tae Kwon Do since about October of last year. She's a high yellow belt (that's the 3rd belt you earn after the introductory white belt), and she just competed in her first tournament, doing Forms and Sparring. She came home with a silver medal in each

Here's a couple of pics -

(she's the one in the RED in these - )

and too tired to smile afterward:

that's some mad-a$$ butt kickin skills.

you should be proud....she's worked hard and stuck with it. Especially amazing since she's only 7, but I am sure you don't need me to tell you to be proud.

Good job on the pics too.

Great pics!! since always is difficult to take pics into the tatami (lights and stuff)
Give her 7 years more in Tae Kwon Do and you won't have to care about boyfriends, she'll do it herself.....
Beleave me, my G/F is black belt.
Doing forms? in TKD you call that Kata? like in Karate? just courious!

That's so cool! My daughters have occasionally expressed interest in learning one of the martial arts. Up til now, we've been too strapped for cash. But now that life's turing around, I'd like to investigate it. What's a rough estimate on cost?

Outstanding. Congrats to you both.
That`s a great amount of focus and stick-to-it-ivness at 7.
Very impressive.

Only problem I had with American Tae Kwon Do was they were concentrating too much on tournament fighting and not enough on mental disiplines. Hope her school is different.

My first tourney was supposed to be a * No Contact * event, they carried 3 kids off the mat, and I left with 5 dislocated bones in my right foot.

Yea Wakkos, Forms = Kata

DB, In My g/f's Dojo you cannot fight in tournaments until you are in green belt, only Kata is allowed, which i think it's ok to make yourself aware of your concentration abilities (sp?)

Thanks guys

Yes, she has done a lot of work, and has enjoyed hersel a great deal.

DB - you definately see that attitude in some of the other schools, and in some of the parents, but her school is very good, and while they obviously focus on the 'fight' end of it, much more importance is given to the discipline and self confidence side of things.

Watching the 5-6 year old boys spar before she went on, there were a couple of coaches/parents at the sidelines yelling thorughout the whole thing... that's just kinda sick IMO.

The girl sh'e sparring in those photos took the gold. They walked up to the podium together chatting like they just played house

Hey thats great DL.

I was never into the whole martial art thing, but I remember my first lacrosse and ice hockey tornements. Parents are nuts. I swear they get more wrapped up in it then the kids. Its great to see that shes doing well though. I tried getting my little sister into lacrosse but she never took the same liking to it that I did.

I`m glad to hear that DL, About her schools attitude. Without the mental disipline, and control, the technique will just get you ( or someone) hurt. At my first school ( Okinawa te) the mental side always came first. Once you demonstrated the control, THEN you got to learn the cool stuff.

Again - thanks guys. I didn't anticipate so many responses.

My girlfrined took all of those pictures - and yes, it's hard to get good pics with the horrid lighting in a place like that (and a crappy point and shoot type camera)! Heh. I was too busy standing in awe as the kid who can't pick up her bedroom sparred with complete strangers in front of 400-500 other complete strangers. Heh.

Hopefully there'll be many more pictures like this in the future! Of course, now it starts getting harder.

For her next test, for the next belt, she has to demonstrate all 4 forms she has learned, plus the new fundamentals (some of which are a bit more difficult than they have been so far), plus board breaking, sparring, and an essay on why she is taking tae kwon do and what she has gained from it so far. Plus being able to demonstrate a general knowledge of the history and origin of Tae Kwon Do, the meanings of the symbols on the Korean flag, the general commands in Korean and counting to 10 in Korean.

Heh. But she's a smart kid...she'll do good as long as she can maintain some sort of focus...which is the real trick with her. I know mainly because every single thing she does is 100% me. Damn kid.....
