Man, I just have to bitch about something. I've got this guy sending me harassing e-mails about my old Flubs of Jurassic Park. It's a site I created over 5 years ago and last updated 2 1/2 years ago. It's one of those old projects that I just don't have the time for anymore.

It ranked as the number one source of e-mail I got from my site, but after a few months following the last update, I was just getting the same stuff over and over. So, I posted a request on my contact page asking that people not write to me about it until I someday find the time to get back to it.

Now I've got this jackass yelling at me that I'm lazy and I should take it down if I'm not going to correct "mistakes" on it and I shouldn't do anything if I'm going to do it half-assed.

It's an old project that I just can't find time for anymore, but I've been asked specifically not to take any of my old stuff down, though I've been tempted to do so. Besides, that flubs list is still the number one draw to my site. I've explained this all to him, but he still complains very rudely. I guess I should just quit my news production job, turn down all freelance Web design work and dedicate myself to old hobby pages that bring in no money.

I'm tempted to take down the site and tell people to forward all their complaints to him.

What a sad Web it would be if everything that isn't 100% up to date just disappeared.

The Bones of Ghost Sites.

I Love them actually. They give a feeling of the "old-web". Sort of a modern version of the antique-curio shoppe.

Sometimes it's sad to see link-rot, but in most cases I find it a bit of nostalgia..especially when I stumble over my own "oldsters"... Shuddering is a good thing

As for the ingrate...An email that illustrates precisely where to place one's lips when begin to suck is always appreciated by the stupid masses I believe. Aside from that, a nice link and posting of the email on the site, with a large flashing gif and no more information usually does the trick.

Oh, and make sure you turn it into a huge freaking filesize under the explanation of the site's disappearance.

Why not suggest to him that if the site annoys him so much he either create his own site, or learn to ignore that which annoys him. Tell him that in the meantime, you plan to take your own advice and will be filtering all future emails from him straight into your trash can.

I would never shut down a site of mine just because some stupid visitor is annoying me. I would start annoying him. A tooth for a tooth, an eye for an eye.

And just a curiosity, since I'm not a native English speaking guy:
What's the difference between "The Flubs of Jurassic Park" and "Jurassic Park Flubs"?

One is the title of my site, the other is not, just as "The Dallas Morning News" is the name of a newspaper and "The Morning News of Dallas" is not.

When people link to my front door and call it BigWaste.com, that annoys me just as much.

I love keeping the old stuff up. Even if it's hard to find, I just think it's great to go back and see how things were when I get in those moods on occasion. That's one thing I've always loved about the Doc's site, he keeps all the stuff up, there's *history* there.

Send him an email that describes your hourly rate for web work. Estimate (liberally, of course) how much time it would take to update the site. Tell him if he's willing to pay ($ x hours) for you to update the site, you'll kindly oblige. If not, he can piss up a rope.

I rewrote some code for calling Exchange Server forms from a web page at http://www.slipstick.com/dev/code/formonweb.htm . Sometimes I get emails from users who think I *OWE* it to them to troubleshoot their issues. It just amazes me sometimes...

Doesn't surprise me, Pugz.

What makes people think that if you spend your own time creating something for your own purposes and offer it up for their enjoyment at no charge, then you are responsible for satisfying their every subsequent demand?

I have spent a ton of money in travel, film, software, hardware and hosting expenses, not to mention countless hours of my free time creating entertaining sites with practically nothing in return; tell me what I owe anyone.

Have I mentioned two separate British television producers who have contacted me, asking for my help with travel shows passing through Texas? Both of them stopped talking to me after I suggested that my time was worth something. They don't work for free ? why should I? You want my travel expertise, you can pay for it. Otherwise, do your own research.

...okay, separate issue, but it still irks me.

Yep. Life seems so much easier if you're an ambitionless moron.

It's the same no matter where you go.

So many people seems to think they are owed something from everyone else.

It has to be said, as a filmmaker, I hate sites which exist puerly for the purpose of pointing out errors.

That said, it's a bummer that this guy can't take a hint.
