Found hands_on through an altavista search for Photoshop Tutorials. Read everything carefully, went though all the tutes in order. I came across this link in amongst all the others and thought to myself 'how do you make a fourm with photoshop?'. I followed it and ended up here. I joined almost immediatley (I was a bit of a joiner in those days). I only managed ot piss off one memeber, DL, but that was when I was already a Mad Scientist.

Many years ago (3? 4?) ozones.com was mentioned in a computer magazine, and being new to the internet at that time I found it most impressive of course. Balls flying around the cursor, images changing when it hovered certain places - I didn't have a clue how the Doc did these things. When I checked back a few weeks (or months?) later there was a new front page, even cooler (I think that was the Tracker) and I started learning HTML and some bits of JavaScript. I might even have stumbled across the Asylum at time, but I believe that I didn't know enough English to understand what this place was all about ... some more time later found the Gurus' tutorials through ozones.com, learned more about webdesign, went to hands-on and eventually clicked the forum link, lurked, got excited, lurked some more and finally joined around christmas last year. And a bit later I noticed that the GN also has a forum and signed up there, too.
It took me some time but I'm here now and I'll stay

Whoop! Sorry, this particular thread got corrupted for a few minutes, I had to rebuild the HTML from the data file.
I think I'm probably one of the first lurkers here. There's a few people here now that I knew from email, lo, these many many moons ago, but for the most part I didn't talk to anybody and nobody talked to me. That was cool, at the time, or so I thought. A few years back I started to get bored with the internet. I'd check in, read my couple of little news outlets, read Dilbert, clean out my spam, it was all just getting old. Also at about this time, Malin was getting *hugely* involved with her whole "LJ" community, she had friends all over the place, they'd chat and share pictures, I became jealous, *I* needed something to do online too!
The whole live journal thing, well, that's just not me, I don't feel right just rambling on and on to an empty room, I need *feedback*, even if it's just you, clearing your throat or something. <digression>Yah yah, I know. You're probably saying something like "But doic! That sounds like heaven for you, a big empty room where you could talk and talk, endlessly, ad nauseum, etc..." Well, it ain't.</digression> Where was I? Oh yeah! I was bored, and I needed something to do to occupy my time online, since Malin was all wrapped up with *her* virtual friends, I needed some too!
Enter "Casual Forums". Well, I just checked that link, they *use* to have forums there, honest! I seem to remember an email, must've gone dot.bankrupt it seems. Maybe it was somewhere else, I misremember. ANYway, it was a cheesy online "build your own forum" site, with banner ads all over the place, I don't even think it was an asylum back then, just another OZONE place. Heh, turns out, it was fun! But, I needed my own place, so I chose the UBB software and built one on my own site. This was cool up until it started takling so much space I had no more room for webpages, bummer. Somewhere in there we became an "asylum", and after some debate (or was it just me, being a dictator?) I registered this domain and ported things over to Dreamhost. (This place is actually *why* I got involved with Dreamhost, I needed the space!)
So, that's as much of the story as I remember for now, someone else can fill in all the details of all the shite that's happened since. Mainly, I was bored. I was lonely. 2500 people showed up. Neat, huh?
Glad you came!
PS: I'm digging around, and came up with a backup of the forum from May of 2000, which I think may be as far back as we go, at least in UBB form. I'll have to finally configure my home Apache 2.0 install with Perl, but I'll try and make that available for browsing soon.
Your pal, -doc-

I got the link to doc's page from a collegue back in -97.
Used to check in every few weeks to gasp at all the cool stuff, and suddenly there was a link to the forum. Then I lurked. For a long time, since I didn't feel I had much to contribute with.
Then, in a sudden act of megalomania, I threw my humility out the window and joined.
Can't remember that I've been thrashed for stupidity yet though. But opinions; there's another cup of tea
The names I remember most from my early days is probably twitch^, DL, Weadah, F1 and Gonzo. Oh, and Sloloem.
Anyone but me miss the sigman series?

I was working at a company maintaining their tech support website. Just day to day adding flat HTML pages and a guy there sent me the link. At that point Doc was so far ahead of anyone else on the DHTML scene it blew my mind. I think blueprint was the door though I don't remember.

and that was a bit of a retalliation slimie for all the "i'm with stupid" and "tool" slimies i was making at the time.

it was 1995 my first year in college .. I was surfing the net and looking for graphically inclined websites .. as to help me create my first web page .. and I stumbled upon www.ozones.com(though it wasn't ozones.com at the time) .. five years have gone by .. I watched ozones.com as the Doc continued to put out new layout after layout .. and I was amazed and speechless .. I had not visited the site much between 1998 and 2000 .. when I strolled by the site I saw the Doc started a forum and within seconds I signed up and posted .. and then I left for about another year before I finally found my way back to this place and I now visit it daily! .. actually more then daily! .. I would say I spend about 2 hrs atleast here a day .. on and off during the days
Doc has provided a great resource and a great place for artistically inclined people to meet and discuss where everyone is honest about what they like and don't like
the Asylum ROCKS!

My borther showed me the handson site that yhe had found whhile searching for photoshop tutorials.
I did a few of those, noticed the forum link and went over looked around and was very impressed with the whole thing.
Came back a year later when I was working on a flash project for school and joined to ask how to make a dent in a piece of wood and have been a regular lurker/sporadic poster since then. Mostly just wonder around looking amazed at what the people here can do.
