Hi.
I'm new here and I'm a complete beginner when it comes to webdesign. I do however know html on a little more than completely basic level. I'm thinking of using MS frontpage for my site and would like to know if that would be a good thing or if there's other software out there that would be better for a true beginner.

Thanks in advance for any help.

In other words, that would *not* be what I would call a "good thing." Avoid frontpage! Like the plague! Stay away!

Learn HTML. If you don't want to take the time do that for some reason, and you *must* use a WYSIWYG editor (such as frontpage), then use Dreamweaver. But try to learn HTML soon.

[edit: the funny thing here is that I didn't see Krets' post before I made mine.]

Ok judging from the enthusiastic response I guess frontpage is a definate no no. I've tried doing it in html I'm just not happy with the results I get there right now. And I have to admit a lot of my dissatisfaction is that I'm not good enough at html to get the results I want right now.

thanks.

Go with Dreamweaver then. Its much more flexible than FP, writes cleaner code, and has a fairly good HTML editor so you can become more familiar with HTML as you work.

Save yourself $399.00 on Dreamweaver and who knows how much for FrontPage. Download HTML Beauty by our very own Mr. Max. After that browse over to HTML Goodies. HTML isn't a difficult thing to learn by any means. If you have a few hours to kill you can probably learn it before bed time. CSS can be learned on the web as well.

I work for a software supplier. I can get software.
I'm not worried about that. And thanks for the link to html goodies (oddly enough that's the site I actually the site I refered to the first time I decided to tackle learning html). I've actually spent a lot of time learning html over the last few weeks and while I certainly can't claim to be an expert I'm good. The thing about it that knowing it and applying it are entirely different things. I'm not getting the design results I want. That's frustrating me, that's why I was thinking of going towards and editor. I'm having a difficult time working in code. And I know it's kinda a cop out to just go to an editor rather that battle it out. Colour me impatient. HTML for me is knowing the code and knowing what 'this' does or 'that' does, and not knowing to get them to 'do' what *I* want them to do. I figure an editor would give me a bit more control where I can adjust the code as I go along.

P.S. Thanks all for the feedback.

I learned coding on MS FP 98.

I learned how to code becuase FrongPage would not allow me do do what i wanted to do. It was VERY restrictive. so was the 2000 version.

It also makes the dirtiest code i have ever seen. It is a major pain to go back and fix.

Please dont use it.

Please.

HTML is a very simple language to learn... and you dont really need to learn it that well, cuz you can always look stuff up.

Use Maxs Beauty. I beg you. Use it. Please!

<ducks for cover>

Ok. Ok.
I get it. Frontpage bad.
As I've been abusing you guys' resources for tutorials and such over the last few weeks I'm firmly convinced you guys know what you're talking about. I have just one other question for today. I'm putting a form on the site and I'm thinking of using FormMail Is that ok or are there other alternatives I should be aware of?

p.s. also any good mail servers?

Frontpage is evil. Evil I say. Like evil with a capital EVIL!!!!

shudders They make everyone use that at the univ for their sites for their research projects and for any univ site maintenance... shudders again

Fortunately I have administrator rights and can use whatever I want and get straight into the server and just copy/paste what I want in which directories.

calms down now...

I once had to use Frontpage for a job. I found it to be a bit hard to deal with so I went with Microsoft's lower end HTML editor Notepad. While not as full featured as the high end Frontpage at least I had the ability to make the damn pages do what I wanted them to do.

Just my own 2 cents
