oorrr... rather than learn a stupid fucking operating system i switched to something much, much nicer.

sorry but after switching from my old mac, to a variety of pcs for eight years, it feels damn good to be back with apple.

i don't think it's a fair comparison between the two because of course apples should be easier to use and one should encounter less problems with them, there's one f@cking company making the operating system and hardware. on the windoze side microsoft has to work with literally hundreds of hardware manufacturers and try to patch something together that'll work reasonably well for everyone.

utopia versus reality. whatever.

Thats funny I though OS X was just BSD Unix with a pretty GUI. And I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure about 10 billion companies build hardware for Apple computers too.

dmstiner is correct.

I like some of apple's thinking though... at least it's not afraid of progress.
No ps/2 ports, no floppy drive, all firewire.
And of course its use of BSD.

I would possibly buy an apple if they put real processors in them.
And if they gave in to a right and left mouse button... pressing command all the time is a huge pain.

Well your kind of wrong and right. It is a BSD OS with a pretty GUI but I imagine it was built from binaries specifically for the mac. Of course it's a ridiculously small number of companies that manufacture hardware for the mac when compared to a PC running Windows.

IMHO, the general person owning a mac is wasting his money. A Window's machine is more then stable enough to send emails and type reports. Besides that, if someone was more concerned with an OS thats specifically tailored to their system, they can invest the time, rather then the money, and raise a GentooOS. A mac's a fine computer. For twice as much as PC it's a pretty paper weight that does exactly the same thing as a PC.

Edit: Genis, if you still have a bank account left after purchasing a mac, you could always purchase a cheap 3rd party mouse. Logitech makes good ones for the mac as well as PC. As far as being innovative though, with Apple its not always a good thing. A mac isn't very backwards compatable. I tried using my new display with an old G3 and it blew up.

Whether you find the commercials annoying or not, I'm positive they'll work well. The unfortunate thing is that the majority of the populace want to live in a push-button world. So if a company like Apple markets themselves as being simple and easy to use, then they'll sell.

I dunno I'm a fan of OSX because it's a Unix for the desktop If I got a laptop I'd go with a Mac. However desktop's are still much cheaper for me to build myself with Windows. Also I gotta say if you don't want your PC to crash just install XP it really is extremely stable. . I don't think I've had to reboot because of issues yet.

Yeah, the commercials are really annoying, besides the fact that they border on propaganda. Then again, so do 90% of commercials on television. The worst offender is that "The Truth" ad against smoking. That is the biggest piece of commercial bullshit I have ever seen. Might as well call it "How to ass-rape statistics in your favor".

Anyway, the Mac vs PC debate is more of a personal thing I guess. In terms of pure speed, its a toss-up depending on configuration and hardware. As far as software, you just can't beat the PC. Although developers are supportings Macs more and more, the amount of software support is just not there. Now, granted, most large titles such as Photoshop have Mac versions, and most even have code specifically written for Macs. However, there is a lot more software available PC wise.

This is especially true in PC gaming. The biggest reason hinges on money. Most software developers work with budget constraints, and the PC platform allows them to reach the largest target market available. Making a game Mac compatible, infringes on that budget and allows the software to reach a smaller market at the cost of development. Do the math.

But, even loving the PC as I do, I'd still like a Mac box becuase I'm the kid that has to have everything, hehe.

just thought I'd throw in my $.02 on Gaming on a Mac:

As an avid Gamer ( notice I did not say skilled. reflexes slow down when you get old, thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!) I have to admit to being jealous of all the games available to the PCs. But realisticly, I don't suffer from any lack of exellent games to play. To me, a computer is too much of an investment to be swayed into buying one on the basis of how many games I can load on it.

Now, if you will excuse me, the new multi-player patch for AvP has been released. Time to hunt Bugs.

Gaming on the Mac? I've got some good games on mine. UT, WC3... What it boils down to for me is simple. If they don't make it for the Mac.. I don't buy it. Er.. actually that covers pretty much all software, not just games. They want my money, they gotta set up shop in my neighborhood. Gotta agree with Norm too. I couldn't bring myself to buy a computer just for games. They have consoles for that. And uh, yea, I think Macs are easier to use/understand. Worth every penny imo. And their commercials are always entertaining.

Mac vs PC

Holden vs Ford (Or is it Chevy vs Ford in the US?)

It's more of a personal choice really. There will always be at least two companies fighting it out for the top. And I'm glad there is. As long as Mac poses a threat against the M$ user base then both sides of the fence will continue to fertilise their lawn and make things greener all round.

Although I'm a PC man and 90% of the reasons while I'll stay with a PC are because It's what I'm accustomed to:

* I like have three mouse buttons and a mouse wheel.
* I want the end and home keys to move the cursor to the end or starte of the current line.
* I want to be able to hold down shif and select multiple files in a window using the keyboard.
* I really like IE 6... IE 5 for the Mac just annoys me.
* I like having a task bar, I hate using the finder.
* I like being able to completly maxamise my programs. I hate judggeling through a maze of windows.
* I like the fact that My $1000 PC seems just as fast as the $4000 G4's that I use at University.

Although, If I grew up using Mac's then I'd most likely be saying the complete opposite right now. Apart from those personal choices I don't really think there's much of a difference between Mac's and PC's... Nothing better -- nothing worse.

PC's might tend to have more hardware related bugs due to the huge volume of developers making hardware for them but if you ask me that's not a good reason to abandon them. If everyone switches to Mac's so will the hardware developers and then we have the same problem all over again. Besides, The G4's I use at University seem to have more problems then My PC at home. I usually have to restart them one every hour.

Although now that I think about it there are a couple of minor difference between the two that seem to stand out.

PC's have a larger user base. No matter what way you look at it, this is a good thing, mainly for software development. PC's also tend to be a lot cheaper on the hardware front. Mainly because there's a lot more competition, which always end up being in favour of the consumer.

Mac's generally have better support for external devices. As a rule of thumb they do cost more but you are getting quality for your money, an Idea long abandoned by many PC developers today (but not all). Style. From the OS to the exterior, they carry themselves in a class of their own.

But ~most~ of the bad things about either PC's or Mac's can usually be boiled down to personal preferences. Useability for the new computer user belongs in a completely separate debate IMHO. Computers are still very complicated devices and no matter what way you look at it they are difficult to use. Mac, PC or *nix; all have learning curves and if you know nothing about computers then their all pretty darn steep.

Ahh...The Age Old Debate, which is the better computer: PC or MAC? Well, my personal preferance is PC, with Windows 2000 Installed. I know people, such as my Dad, who could just never get used to using a Mac (He programms databases for the US Army Corps of Engineers). Me, on the other hand, have gotten used to using one, and I can say that OSX is nice, although it is (little more than) a Linux GUI. I'd rather run Linux, yup, just plain old Linux, personally. Why? Well, for one thing: Macs just try to be too user friendly...I mean, the Pc is complicated, and that, to me, is a good thing, it means that I can customize virtually every aspect by looking in the registry, or by Hex editing my sys files etc...anyways, having used Macs for 4 years at school, up untill last year when the jh bought dells, but then having to revery back to Macs in hs, I have to say that PC's are dominant, and this is coming from somebody whos usage of a computer wars in kindergarted on a MAC. All in all, I think that the Mac computers all share one thing in common: MAC is just plain old CRAP! (well, at least thats my opinion), yours may differ!

* I like having a task bar, I hate using the finder.OS 10 has a task bar
* I like being able to completly maxamise my programs. I hate judggeling through a maze of windows. Also easily done in OS 10
* I like the fact that My $1000 PC seems just as fast as the $4000 G4's that I use at University. It seems like you've made the right choice then

I don't have anything against Macs, I just don't use them because I like Windows. If I have a problem with something I can usually tinker around and get it fixed. With Mac I'd have to start all over again.

For those of you who say Mac is more stable, that may be true over previous versions of Windows but with XP, like bit said, I've yet to have a problem.

I agree on the Dell commercials too but at least the pitchman isn't proclaiming that his own stupidity forced him to switch to Mac. Windows really isn't that tough to learn...

The home and end keys not working on macs is a serious issue for me. Take my word for it, those of you with Windows: make it a point to use the home and end keys when you need to move the cursor quickly, along with ctrl+left and ctrl+right to move back and forth entire words, and your typing will speed up a *lot* (provided you have as many typos to fix as I do). I commonly hit Home -> shift+End to select all the text in a text box. This is a necessary feature for me.

Well this is one of those annoying debates that never get solved, but I thought I might as well just say something. I like PC's because they are more powerful, more easily upgradable, they have more software, and many other reasons, but those are the most important one. And to the two people who said that they wouldn't buy a computer simply based on what games it can run, I think people meant most software in general. PC's have a ton more software (including games) that can be run on them, not just games.

I can do everything on a Mac that I can do on a PC, it's just that I'm a lot faster when using a PC and as of yet haven't found a good enough reason to justify the switch... The main one being money, cause I'd also have to purchase new software.

1- More powerful? Surely you know better than to compare the clockspeed of two chips with dissimilar design.

2- Sure it's kinda tough to upgrade an iMac, but a G4 tower is another story.

3- So instead of having your choice of 100 software titles to acomplish any given task, you are limited to 25 choices. Big deal. Plus in a pinch, on those rare ocassions when(usually for a class) I must run a PC only application, I just fire up Virtual PC. It's a little slow , but so is Seattle traffic sometimes.
