I was reading through the latest copy of PC World and found this trick to speed up IE. I've been surfing around some of my favorite sites and I can really notice a difference. The trick lets IE establish more connections with a server (as long as the server hasn't blocked more than 2 connections) to get data faster.

Here we go.

1. Open regedit
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Internet Settings
3. You're looking for two keys: MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server and MaxConnectionsPerServer
4. The default for MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server is 4 but can be set as high as 20.
5. For MaxConnectionsPerServer the default is 2 but you can go as high as 10.
(I've got mine at 20 and 8)

If you can't find those you have to create them.

1. Right-click in the right pane and select New > DWORD.
2. Do that twice and create the necessary keys then modify the values.

As with all registry editing if you don't know what you're doing, be careful! You might even want to create a copy of your reg just in case. http://find.pcworld.com/30974 has an article on doing just that.

Have fun!

I didn't show you that tho. You may be able to find a utility that does this for you if you're not comfortable doing it yourself. There's one called Dr something or other, DrTweak? meh, I dun remember... check the DSL/cable/speed frek/networking forums

I don't know a whole lot about system files and such, but will this effect just IE, or CrazyBrowser also, which is built off of IE?

And I'm not finding these two regs on the school computer, so I'll take at it look tomorrow morning at home.

Max's are 20 and 10 in decimal or hex? You have that option when you assign the value... Or at least I do on this computer. I imagine it's decimal, but just want to check.

But I also wonder if it can be of help for my dial-up connection. I guess I'll just go and try it out now.

Hey, another cool trick to make surfing quicker...
<lame trick>
When typing a domain name that ends in .com, you can type the domain name (without the .com) and hit [CTRL]+[ENTER] and IE will automatically prepend the http://www. and the append the .com to the url for you.

I think you're talking about Dr. TCP Jason. You can find it at
http://www.dslreports.com

I have that program though and have never noticed any similar settings.

Oh, I think this might fit in here well....

Lord_Fukutoku, it will work with Crazy Browser too. That is what I use. Like you said, Crazy Browser is just a wrapper for IE. Very cool though.

That is a great trick. I use dial up and could see a BIG difference.

Thanks Krets.

Especially for a dial up user.
With broadband, chances are that by the time you've queued the 3rd file, the 1st is downloaded.

Bear in mind though, that every new connection eats away at valuable bandwidth, so you can get more files at once, but they each come down slower.

Hhmm....I had to create the regkeys, oh well!

It does seem to work, like DA was the worse site I go to in terms of speed. It would take about 20sec to load a thumb page of about 42 images on a cable line. Now with the regkeys it's about 10sec.

Neat that is! Now why did MS not make it 20/10 for those regkey...hhmmmmm

yup, DrTCP from dslreports, that's the one. I do recall the thing working with max server connections somehow but the reg keys you posted definitely helped beyond whatever that did. My connection is blazin fast but this seems to cure some of those spots that "hang" like DA as mentioned... prolly oughta post this in the DA forum if you're feeling really helpful

X-Setup by Xteq Systems lets you tweak all sorts of registry settings without using regedit. And it's freeware. Naturally, the usual cautions about backing up your registry apply.

This thread's particular tweak in X-Setup is under Internet > Internet Explorer > System > Server Connections. Use 32 under HTTP/1.0 and 16 under HTTP/1.1.

In Mozilla, a similar setting can be found under Edit > Preferences > HTTP Networking. The Use HTTP 1.1 radio button should be selected, and check the boxes for Enable Pipelining.

Ini, with most servers there is a way to limit the number of connections so if they're that concerned about it they can limit the number to 2. (One for HTML docs and one for images is the standard)

I don't think this tip would work greatly with dial-up. At 56kbps (IF you can get this speed), you are more limited by the modem capacity itself than by the number of connections to the same site. Besides, many sites limit the number of simultaneous connections generally to just one or two. I believe this tip must be better for non-dial-up connections. For big broadband connections, I also think it may not be that useful since real broadbands are already fast enough.

InI: The banner says, "The faster you download, the bigger your penis is," not "The faster you download, the bigger your penis will be." In other words, download speed is a machismo thing, the geek equivalent of a fast car. Your penis won't suddenly grow if you start to download faster (well, I guess that depends on what you're downloading...), but it will be perceived subconsciously by the community that you indeed have a large penis because you can download fast.

Oh, and why can't you say penis?

(Yes, overanalyzing is fun. I was an English major in university, and that's pretty much what we would do for kicks. Without overanalyzing, English majors would really have no reason to exist.)

[Edit: In fact, it has occurred to me that, in the community of English majors, the more deeply you can analyze something, the larger your penis is perceived to be.]
