Nope, the last time that I tried to install Linux it was with Mandrake 9. I then proceeded to blow up my piece of crap hard drive.

Have to wait until I get another hard drive to install Linux.

Well im in the process of downloading the ISO's now, when I get a chance to upgrade my system I'll let you guys know how it is.

From what I have heard it should be a wast improvment from the previous RedHat. I like RedHat 7.3, it was easy to install and most of the programs I needed worked without much fuzz. I haven't tried this one myself yet, but the next time I install a Linux version I think I might go for this one.

Looking forward to hearing what you think of it.

I downloaded the ISOs from a not-so-very-legal site (five CDs) but I haven't had the guts to install it yet.
I never used Linux but I want to give it a shot.
I need to know all the details before installing it because I want to install it along with my current system, in a multi-boot situation, with WinXP and Win2k.
But I've read that Linux destroys the MBR and then, I won't be able to install any more future Windows versions and, probably, won't be able to recover the current ones, if anything goes wrong with them.
So, the solution seems to be using a diskette to boot Linux, this way I won't destroy the MBR (but, also, I won't have a multi-boot with Linux)
This seems to be the best option for me. But, I'm going to try it only after I am very assured that I'm not going to screw up my computer. Need to read a lot more about Linux...

Theres a lot of documentation, including the Getting Started manual you can download from RedHat. I suggest printing that out before getting started.

I really like how linux looks... I installed mandrake once but I decided to get it off....As much as I tried, and read and read and read, I couldn't get my internet connection to work

Check out the little flash movie they have about Linux...pretty neat..

but anyways...I knew I should of got a Mac

Viol: Almost every Linux distro can be downloaded legaly from their 'home page', I think Suse is the only big distro that don't provide an iso. During the installation of most new Linux distros (at least the user friendly variants) you get to choose where you want to install the boot loader...

I used Linux for 3-4 months and I really liked it, but there were a couple of programs that I needed that didn't work on the Linux so I had to go back to Windows If you can get all of the programs you need/want to work in Linux there is no reason to use Windows in my opinion.

Photoshop will probably never come over to Linux. It just doesn't seem to make sense from an open source point of view. Photoshop is expensive and Linux users generally don't like paying for their software. Of course Gimp is a fairly good alternative for what you pay for and you can always get Photoshop running with Wine.

Of course it seems to make better sense just to purchase a decent size HD and dual boot the two OS's. Linux really doesn't need all that much room and while it's a hastle to restart your computer, its better then going without one or the other.

I would as would thousands of other users. Pay for photoshop if it were ported over to Linux. It would be well worth the money. I have everything under *nix that I need and want except photoshop. That is the one hurdle I face. And gimp is a good program but it just does not cut it. I have spent years using and learning photoshop and I don't want to have to spend that time learning the ins and out of gimp. So, for now my home BSD box is used for coding and the windows box at work is being used for photoshop.

Back the the main topic. Please do give a review of 8.0, I was thinking of making the install. But wanted to get more information on the multimedia support, as well as how the look and feel is. I have been looking into giving my grandma a *nix box for her work, but I am just not sure if it is up to the level of usability that she would require.

Gimp is an amazing feat of OpenSource programming, but it just doesn't hold a candle to Photoshop.

Photoshop is an amazing feat of programming. period.

I think Gimp was on the right track but it seems they just stopped the development awhile back.

As for Linux, I like Redhat. I know its ins and outs best of all the Linux variants.
I haven't downloaded a new version in awhile though, I'm hesitant to destroy all my customizations of my current Redhat implementation. I've never upgraded... maybe I should try that out. I would like to hear about Jestah's experience with it.

One of my non-mainstream favorites though was the one version wonder: Progeny Debian. It never quite got off the ground but I did like the one and only version that came out. It was a more-friendly Debian... quite fun.

I keep looking for a barebones Desktop version of Linux, with only the stuff Windows 98 users need. Maybe Lindows will be it... I don't know. Wal-Mart seems to be betting on it.

I'ma call the cops on viol and tell them that he's using a pirated version of Linux.... he'll rot in jail..

Yeah Jestah, I hear you. I have used the Gimp...but, as said above, it just doesn't stand up to PS. And why should I have 2 OSs on my computer? I only want one. I would switch instantly to Linux if it supported PS...and never look back. In fact, if I had a 'windows compatible (100%)' shell for Linux, well, that would be that, wouldn't it?

And I guess that is my point...I think just about everyone would switch...stability, security, and a low price...just don't understand why Linux doesn't do that...*shrugs*

Guess they like getting 'shoved around' by M$.

Downloaded Mandrake 9 at work the other day. Going to install it on a 20g partition on my system tonight

I have an 80g with 2 partitions. Not using one of them at all so hey. . . why not.

I agree with WarMage, I would pay for PS on Linux. Right now it is about the only thing that is holding me to not running straight Linux

I don't have a user account, I just use the root. I can only get into gnome, how do I get into blue curve and kde? the other versions let you choose at the log-in screen. Nvidia still makes linux drivers right?

Yes, nvidia makes linux drivers, but they are not open source.

Blue Curve is only a theme for Gnome and Kde, it isn't a seperate Window Manager. Not sure about this, but KDE isn't installed by default. So if you didn't ask to have it installed you might have to install it seperatly. If it is installed you should get an option of choosing which to use when you log in.

I just got Mandrake 9 installed yesterday. Man I LOVE IT!!!

As said before, if I could have PS on it I would just wipe out windows completly. I got a distro from cheap bytes for like $10!

Geez, I completely forgot about this thread.

I'm really liking 8.0. I bought a copy the other day, it should be here tomorrow morning by 10am in fact. Even though RedHat's free, you hafta support your fav. distro every now and then.

Are you sure you have KDE installed? With the new install process, KDE isn't installed by default. I prefer RedHat over Mandrake but it's more or less personal choice.

Yes, I selected KDE, and I didn't choose to create a user account. I'm wondering if that is the reason why I didn't get the choice of using kde or gnome. I will probably reinstall since I still like KDE over gnome for some reason.

I'm preferntial to mandrake myself. I like the installer better and I think it's not as cluttered as RH.

Totally personal choice though.

In one of the Norwegian PC magazines they tested win4lin. It is a windows emulator for linux which worked on most of the programs they tried, even PS worked in it without any problems. The downside with the program is that you need to own a copy of Windows 95/98/ME to use it and it costs a lot ($90 or something). I haven't tried it myself, but thought that maybe someone here might be interested.

Yes I love my Mandrake. I read about Red Hat the other day on how they made KDE and Gnome look almost alike. I personnaly like Gnome better.

I am getting ready to install BlueFish HTML editor to test out.

I am having some problems getting used to this UNIX sytax for the directories and installs and stuff. Had a real problem trying to install a program that was a TAR file. Didn't know you had to compile the silly thing

Also, is there anything that I should look at when wanting to download a program that is Window manager specific? I mean if I want to test out something, do I have to find one that is FOR Gnome or KDE? Or does it matter?

When it comes to windows compability I don't think it matter whenever you run Gnome or KDE.

Linux programs that I use and remember the name of:
Igloo FTP
OpenOffice
Gnome ICU
Mozilla
and a lot of the standard programs that follow with the distros...

Inition: There are a lot of programs out there that allows you to chat with your ICQ contact through Linux. The one I like best is GnomeICU. There is also one quite good that works almost like Trillian, but I can't remember what the name of that one is.

Your window manager shouldn't matter as long as the prog (and most of them are) runs on XFree86 which is the server that your windows manager runs on.

Also I've started playing with ximian which is an interesting version of GNOME. their evolution product is a great replacement for outlook. One note though their install hosed my KDE Shortcuts (just a couple of shortcuts, nothing too major) which pissed me off. Try running the online install from Gnome.

I'm trying to get my hardware to work in linux.

Nvidia usually makes a RedHat driver, so I'll just wait that out.

System: P3 800, 512 ram, 2 60 gig hard drivers, DVD, CDRW, Wacom intiuos, Canon S800, Epson 1640su

need to get printer working! Tried canon website, no linux drivers. the RedHat site didn't turn up any canon specific drivers, were do you find good drivers?

need to get scanner working, epson has no driver. Going to try Sane.

Need to get Wacom working, anyone here with experience getting the wacom driver from the support site working?
be able to contact icq users through linux.


Grumble: I like to tinker (too much free time I guess) and getting my stuff to work would be useful to maximizing my linux experience.

Inition, I will look for a site that I used to see about my hardware. Found out my modem doesn't work with Mandrake. No biggie, just get a 3Com and it will be cool.

Well my boxed set finally came. I hafta admit I was very disappointed. I used to highly recomend beginners buying the boxes because of the three manuals it came with. This version (8.0) came with one small Installation Guide. So I wasn't too happy about that one bit. It didn't even come with the typical bumper sticker that it usually came with. It came with a circular logo. Grrrr.
