LF: LOL - we were editting at the same time and came close to screwing things up there

I've reorganised that section so there is now a tips section:

:FAQ:

and one covering the current game:

:FAQ:

and we can keep the main one for more general resources - like links or who is playing and their character names so we don't kick our own asses by accident:

I like the Ozone Federation.

I've also got a ship doing nothing but making fighters. It's currently got 3677 fighters so it's almost there. The biggest thing is fuel consumption. On my main ship, I've cut down on the fighters I have because they reduce fuel efficiency.

Yep, Ozone Federation sounds good to me... And for the 3 character "code" or whatever you want to call it, OZN probably, yes? Something obvious...

Heh, yea, I figured we were overlapping with our editing, lol. I hit submit, came here and posted, went back to fix something and it kept screwing with me. After a minute though, all was well.

OK cool just checking if anyone had any ideas like:

The Ozonic Hegemony

Looking good on the numbers their Silence.

I'm already drawing up a payback list as I get nasty news like:

quote:
FUSLIT killed your Starbase at 29485 (you earned 7500 reputation points)
FUSLIT sighted in sector 29485.
20 fighters were killed in 29485 (you earned 4000 reputation points)

So if anyone sees him tag him with a homing device - I now have a Stealth Battleship with some goodies

Anyway I think now is the time to do a bit of 'planet herding' - if you pass a planet belonging to an ally and then a depot (or vice versa) backup and shove them together that way we can start monopolising resources e.g. LF I pushed a planet into the same sector as a depot of yours at: 27830.

Its obvious from my getting my ass kicked that you should reinforce your starbases - I know Lacuna is doing well so perhaps she could drop the costings into the FAQ (we've dropped quite a few pricings for ships in there).

OK after a quick chat with Lacuna here are my thoguhts for a general strategy:

While we are waiting for the team to come together:

1. All the inmates should try and get to our part of space.

2. Keep trading and growing.

3. Grab a planet and depot and reinforce it with a starbase (work up a big wad of cash and land on the planet grab hardware and upgrade and keep doing that for a bit).

4. Do some planet herding (as mentioned above) start shoving the planets and depots of allies together.

4. Do some serious scouting. Note down any planet and depot combintaions (without nebula) that we can target.

When we are a team everything will open up again so we can:

1. Start taking over targetted planet/depo combos.

2. Start pushin everyone else out of the area.

3. Find the people who have destroyed my ships (MAGIC MAN destroyed 2 lots of 10 fighters - I suspect they are asking for it though and I'll withdraw them and pos. work on scouts).

4. Fill our sector with scouts - has anyone tried this?

Any other ideas, thoughts, etc? Do people think this is OK or not or what?

Oh and keep us updated on the fighter numbers.

Heh heh... Along the lines of 'planet herding' so ours are together, we can warp enemy planets to black holes ::evil grin:: ... And go ahead and try to occupy nebulas with a planet of yours. Simply warp them into the sector with the nebula.

Also, I have yet to find out what happens to ports/planets that are in nebulas, when you warp/nudge something else into that same sector. I know the one you pushed in stays and the one that was there disappears/relocates/or something...

[edit: If anyone needs help clearing out a planet so you can build a bunker, let me know.

Well done tikigod

I have managed to create the Ozone Federation but we only have 15 slots so I crated a second team as there is quite a lot of ships piling up in the region of 157,000. Anyway go to team summary and add yourself to the 2 teams:

#193 The Ozone Federation [OZN] (14 vacancies)
#179 Fractal Genetics [FRA] (15 vacancies)

It would help if you only added yourself to the Ozone team if you are already in our area. Also if you have generated a lot of characters as LF and I have done to test strategies then don't sign them all up with the GN nip over and sign up with team FRA

That territory has hundreds of planets and depots and is what allowed me to build up the fighters quickly (I only created that ship yesterday).

I am getting a bit addicted to this game.

As part of the fun I am working on a Java Application to connect to the system and make things a bit easier, the web interface is driving me nutz. I am also trying to figure out a way to mage a map of the sectors.

I am thinking that a big linked list is going to be the thing that is needed for that. Right now it is slow work, but I will get it down eventually. I am still tying get the basic interface through telnet working. I figure that once I actually get used to the game I will be able to figure out what is nessessary in order to make a pretty nice application to make working in this gaming world a bit easier.

I'm not sure how many inmates there are in the game but I'd like to eventually have the OZN available to as many inmates as possible (which'll mean shuffling out various ships so we can have 15 inmates). With 5,000 ships I can setup a team and then hand over the captaincy to someone else so if anyone wanted to create more teams to go after different areas or to do specialised things (I was thinking of a team of battleships aimed at getting revenge on various people who had destoryed my fighters and starbases - there are already 3 on the list ).

Question about mapping:
Is it basic xxyyzz?
That's what it looks like to me, but I'm not sure.
If it is, as I suspect, I might fiddle with making a 3d map.

Also, what do the letters after a sector number mean?

The letters after a sector number mean there is a depot there. The closer the letter is to 'a,' the more money/bots you will make. If it is a 'z,' it is selling what you are carrying.

And it is very addictive, lol. I just created a new name a bit ago, and already have a #7 starbase with it

It isn't a grid. It is a list of nodes. The main problem with the mapping is that

1) The galaxy is in constant flux, as new gaming areas are added as more people join the game.
2) Stated in the rules there are some galaxies that could be *impossible* (near impossible) to accurately map.

An example of a dimond galaxy. This is probabally wrong, but could work.

I am going to work out the datastructure and the parsing needed to get the data, I might then request INI to put some of his graphics godly ness to work on my datastructure to draw the map out. Depends if INI has the time. It is a work in progress, but I figure that without some kind of map it will get really confusing really quick.

Right now I just keep a log of all the pertenent locations, and there exits. But as I expand my area of influence it gets harder to keep track of everything I have, where I have it and what it means.

If there are plans to really get this off the ground web space will prolly be required as you will need a place to store information. Pertinent locations, hit lists, friend lists, trading routes, etc. Strategies, team listings, and how they all work.

Emps: you mention a brute team. The ozone control of the galaxy. You get 15 BC's 50,000 fighters and they just boost into an area clear it out completely, and then jump back to base. Next the traders move in 15 SB's pop up, they dump in a shit load of fighters and then its done, that sector is under control.

The one problem I find is that if you are on different teams you can't really work togeather, as you can not enter sectors guarded by another team. It is an interesting set of rules, but pretty damn complex.

I still want to figure out what this "FINAL BATTLE" is.

We will need different teams as you can only have 15 characters on a team and there are probably more than that floating around.

Noded, huh? I was afraid of that. Thanks for confirming it, WarMage.

Gave it some thought. The only way I can think of for a visual map is a circular tree. Current node in the center with exits branching out. From the exits, take it one more level deep/out.

Would Flash be a good environment for such a mapping system? You know, get really fancy with ActionScript (or whatever it's called), and have the bonus of vectors. Even a comment panel for the individual nodes.

I'm thinking too much.

WJ: That might not be a bad solution. I have gotten the data structure down in Java ans a simple tool for manipulating the nodes. I have all the stuff I am working on up and online, you can browse the files any and all, its not my bandwidth.
http://www.sinc.sunysb.edu/Stu/dcurran/sst/

Node.java and PropogateMap.java are the two classes I worked on for the map so far. PropogateMap hasn't been commented out but Node.java has.

The other classes namely SST.java is the basic Telnet Interface I am beginning work on. This is all under 2 hours worth of work so you can really see some alpha stuff, basic ideas that are running through my brain.

I am catching a ride to a plane in 45 minutes, and I will be gone for a good week, so I just wanted to put my stuff online in case anyone wanted to take any of the code for a run. If you have any ideas or make any modifications please let me know.

The Incursion Executive

However, I did get a little Led Zep and ponder:

Hammer of the Gods

but I suspect I'll come up with something better.

Technically I can start the team now and hand the captaincy over to you (you don't need 5,000 fighters to captain a team just to make one).

Basically we want Hyper ships with lots of combat computers and fighters - I have a couple I can move over once more inmates sign up for the OZN

LF: You destroyed Michael's starbase - it wasn't listed in the FAQ (so he got what he bloody deserved, esp. given his rather 'colourful' naming ).

If you have a lot of cash then grab one of the MANY planet/depot combinations and set up a base and let us know so we can move over (Dark Biology is changing back to FRA as it is a liner). I'd suggest we all go there then save up a lot of money and find a planet/depot combo and move it in adjacent to that one and set up a base - eventually we should have a big lump of planets and depots with starbases which makes it awfully tricky for someone to get in and do a lot of harm (but we'll see once we start pissing people off I suppose).
