Okay, I said in some thread I'd post a picture of what I use to get a metal effect. It's really simple. REALLY simple.

Before:

Curves:

After:

See how easy that was? And it works for anything with a simple 3D bevel effect. Just don't use the layer effects for your bevel.. that doesn't work. :P

Post it on the gurusnetwork. It would be good to add it.

I'm not sure what the gurusnetwork is, but I don't have a web page with this tutorial on it.

Glad to oblige, Eyezaer... it also works with brushed metal, like this!

I suggest giving it the brushed look BEFORE doing the curves...

Good call HS! A great example of how curves are a must to know!

I'll post a few more examples of the kinds of effects you can get from curves when I get some stuff done at home. If anybody tries this, I'd certainly be interested to see the results. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

Nevex:
Actually Steve did an Amazing tutorial on Curves for the GN http://gurusnetwork.com/tutorials/photoshop/curves1.html
but this is a great, simple use for them.

I used almost the same method for a gradient underlay in the end of the metal textures tutorial as well. http://gurusnetwork.com/tutorials/photoshop/met_texture.html

Human Shield:
I think Nevex is right, you should check out the Guru's Network http://www.gurusnetwork.com

I think you'd like it, and possibly be another great resource for additions before, and after the public launch. This is a really nice, simple, tutorial you built here. I like <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

YAY...hype the GN. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif">

Okay, that's all the slacking I can do..~weeps and reshackles himself to the beige box~

Along the lines of metal effects... I was messing around just now, and I came up with this. What do you guys think of the "metal?" It's my first attempt at any kind of metal, so go easy on me, ok? <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/tongue.gif">

(Don't worry, this is not a sig! I just like to see my name!)

Try doing the curves thing that HS did up top...it just seems to plain to be metal

Yeah, I was just looking at the contrast on it. (Looks totally different with this background color.) Actually, that was done using curves.

How about this?

I'm not going for anything hypershiny; the surface would refract too much light to produce a gleam like on HS's piece up at the top.

Here's one of my old sigs I did with the trick.

and here you'll see that even though it's shiny, the metal look works with rust...

AND... you can change the color using hue/saturation or variations to make the metal look like gold or copper or whatever...

SIG HAPPY!

[ADDITION:] BTW - Ikonomi... I like the second one, I can see a bit of the sheen in the middle of it. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

Dude! I have been searching high and low for that tutorial! I came across it a long time ago and took some (incomplete) notes on it. Alas, I did not bookmark it or even remember how I got there.

Thanks a *ton* eyezaer.

I've read DG extraordinary tutorial, but it's a bit too involved for my tastes. I'm not that much into metal, so quick and sleazy suits me just fine. I've archived DG's tutorial so, when I go through a metal phase, I've got plenty of ammo.

Curves. I've had some success using curves to achieve the effect. I still have to refine it, but that's how I duplicated it. Start with a B&W (one flat layer) and then go to Curves. Set the white RGB to yellow (or whatever) and the black end to the background. Then play with the middle a little bit to tweak.
