...to upgrade from PS 5.02 to PS 6?
I've heard some mere opinions that there's basically nothing new in PS6 - but I wanted your opinion, the opinion of the pros

Hmm, I'm still running 5.5 on most of my machines, I'm historically *very* slow to upgrade. When I was doing this professionally for the print industry back in the 80's, I learned to always buy the newest versions of the apps when they came out, but I would *never* install them until a client sent me a file that needed the new version in order to open it. (I wouldn't even be running 5.5 on this machine unless I had just reinstalled most things, when upgrading hardware.)

Admittedly, Malin's running 6.0 and it looks like it has some cool features. The text morphing utility looks kind of useful, making curved and twisted type, and then re-typing it with the effects intact, that's cool. I have noticed more bitching and swearing coming from Malin, as Photoshop seems to crash more often than it used to! (Anyone else notice this? PS6 w/ W2K.)

Personally, I'm in no big hurry to upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0, it looks cool, but I never see the need for hurry on these things. I like to wait for the first couple of patches to be sent out, and *then* do the upgrade!

'if it is'nt broken, don't fix it'

my thoughts on this question really would come down to ' is the investment of the upgrade really going to be worth it to you in improved output.'

For me the answer is a 'no'

but if you have loads of cash lying around then go for it!

I have also been following a few forums where new 6 users are discussing there experiences, and my general impression from reading those, especially the one over at Adobe.com, is that 6 has quite a few problems, like Doc alluded too upstairs. Crashes and slow reaction times to name but a few.

hope that helps

The only problem I`ve had with PS6 is the lighting effects sometimes take a vacation at bad times, and sometimes it doesen`t show the brush size when you tell it to, I like the new interface tho...

Interesting...so far, my impression is that PS6 was a defininite improvement. It's on my Christmas list, even. Maybe I should ask for a kitchen table instead?

Okay, due to an aquaintance at Adobe, I was beta testing 6.0 ages ago, and have been using the full release for a bit now as well. It has some AMAZING advances over all previous versions, with the vector functionality on layers, preformed shapes, clipping paths, and doing away with the text box made me more than happy. The ability to warp text and still have it editable is also sweet. I Like the options palette being docked, though I wish it was more intuitive for where I want to dock it, etc. as well as the size of it while docked.

All in all, it's a great upgrade....HOWEVER....I have to admit that I'm not loving all the changes, yet, as I work and learn the new interface/setup to become more ingrained. I still keep a copy of 5.5 on my drive that I use just as much as 6.0...but it's a transferrance process.

A lot of folks aren't going to like some of the changes as they'll need to learn a few things again, with new processes...BUT, this is hands down the biggest, and best upgrade since 3.0 introduced layers.....but then people bitched about learning those too

In a nutshell...get it when you can...get the tryout at least to start seeing the changes that you need to adapt to...but keep your version of 5.0 or 5.5 around for a bit while you changeover.

Hope it helps.

Peter

I haven't used PS 6.0 extensively yet, but my feeling is that they've taken a lot of the clunkiness out of some aspects of the program. Most notably the Save dialog box finally offers all the options at your finger tips. No more having to cancel your save because you forgot to switch color modes or flatten the image. It's all right there.

I liked PS2, you could fit it on a floppy disk! I still have a copy for the mac around, although I no longer have a mac that handles anything as archaic as a floppy disk, sigh. The scariest part was trying to do any kind of layer effects, you want to do multiply? You end up with a new image on the desktop. Try enough things and you had *dozens* of images on the desktop. PS3 was the first with layers, what a HUGE difference!

I have PS 6.0 at work and I would say that having the options tool at the top of the screen is absolutely wonderful.

Would I have paid for the upgrade.... probably not, but my company footed the bill so its a pretty sweet deal for me. I think you can wait a while before upgrading if you don't have the Pesos to do so.

I am waiting for my ver. 6 upgrade to arrive any day now. I have heard though that it has a bad way of handling dodge, so that images made in earlier versions end up looking very different. Anyone knows any more of a problem of this sort?

To me it seems that the value of the upgrade depends on what you use PS for. Myself I am hoping that the handling of text will be much better than in my 5.0. As it is now,
I often make the images in PS and then add the text in Fireworks, because PS handling
of the text is so very awful, making the letters look strange. Have I reason to expect it to be better?

The oldest version I have used is 3, and frankly there is not much that I miss in it, or at least not for image retouch and manipulating. Except maybe for the history palett which I think is a great invention. It also have the advantage, like ver 4, of being faster than PS5
