bigger fan of alt-prntscn, that captures the window, rather than a whole screenshot.

Push the Print Screen Button, it's right next to Scroll Lock, or Push Alt-Print Screen to capture only the current window.
Open Photoshop, open a new document, then go to Edit > Paste or Hit Control - V.

You did not say if your were using a Mac or PC. Screen capture for the mac is ( Shift Command 3 ). It will create a snap shot and save it to the top level directory of your start up disk.

I you use PC there are also some very nice shareware and freeware screen capture apps at www.softseek.com just do a search there Key work "screen capture"

Here are some keyboard commands for screen captures on a MAC.

1. Apple + Shift + 4 Position crosshairs, click and drag as you would
the marquee tool to select and capture the area you want to save. Release
mouse.

2. Apple + Shift + 3 takes a picture of the whole screen.

3. Apple + Shift + Caps Lock + 4 takes a picture of the top window.
Position round icon and click.

You will hear a camera shutter sound letting you know the capture has been
made and the picture should be found on your startup drive under the names
Picture 1, Picture 2, etc. You can open these from PS.

If you wish to cancel variations 1 or 3 before capture is made, press
Command + period .

Add the Control key to any of these to put the capture in the
clipboard instead of making a file of it.

I have a freeware screen capture utility from back in my Ultima Online days that I would use to take screen shots of the game. It works really well, and you can take more than one pic at a time, unlike Print Scrn. If you want it click here.

Note: I didn't make the program.

HyperSnapDX is also a nice program for screen capture. It's also possible to capture screens in games using Direct3D or OpenGL.
Sorry it isn't freeware, huh, EviLToYLeT.

If you have a DVD-ROM and you want to do screen captures, you should check PowerDVD 2.55 for about $50

It does really good still captures in .bmp format which you can then open and edit in photoshop. Don't forget though, that movies and such are copyrighted so be careful how you use it.

It's great if your site does DVD reviews and other stuff allowed in the copyright. (i.e. school use for teaching, critical review, etc.)
