I used to use photoshop 3, 4, 5... there was the "gif export" filter...
you could use the eyedropper to pick multiple transparent colours...
as you selected colours, they dropped out of the image to be replaced
with grey... you could see exactly which colours were being subtracted out...

Now I have photoshop 6 and when I go to "save for web" I can't see
which colours are going to be transparent... I can select a colour...
but I can't seem to select multiple colours...

I like the old way! Can photoshop 6 "save for web" be setup to
work the way the old gif export filter worked? is there a better way?

If you really want the old Gif Export filter back, you can find it in "GOODIES" folder on the PhotoShop CD...

But, I would suggest you to use Safe for Web instead. Just make your image transparent from the beginning and then in Save for Web choose matte color...

save for web does a by far better job of compressing the images. however, there are definately times when you have too many colors in the background that kinda need to match up, which is why making multiple colors transparent would be desired.

Right on Max!! Frankly, I was glad that Adobe dropped the old system. PS6 rulz!! Maybe someday all browsers will support .PNG transperency, and make the whole thing redundant.

exactly like when you optimize a GIF in IR or PS, make all your frames for the animation with NO bg and then in the 'optimize palette' you wanna make sure you check transparency and set the matte.

Yeah, eye, Mcmabry is right, 'cause I had this problem too. If you set the transparency in PS first, then the settings will be transferred to IR if you open IR from PS (in the PS 6 version).
