I got a question for all you people that make me feel extremely small when coming here.

Personally I've been playing around with Adobe for about 2 months now. I've learned how to make pipes, chains, and wires. But makes them bend to form a half circle or a full circle is something I absolute have no clue how to do. If there is a way, I'm sure there is, can you please help me.

I've looked all over for a tutorial and prolly missed the one I was lookin' for. But anyhow, please help me out, I've tried a few ways but it didn't come close to workin!

Give Filter -> Distort -> Polar Coordinates a spin. Choose rectangular to polar. Have your whole canvas selected. It'll help if you use a square canvas too. Try it on some straight lines to get the feel for it first.

Wheeee! You rock, linear! Yuppers, polor coordinates is the clue. It takes straight things and makes them...round. However, there are probably a couple around here that'll ding the use of filters...but that's how I would do it. You could check out the GN tut on Polor coordinates, it's pretty good, and the Displace tut rocks! What ever you do, be sure and make a copy first to try on. Hope that helps.

Linear, is there another shape a canvas can be?

Now, now, just have a pill or two, and go back to your cube at the imaginary company you work for....

Edit: by the way, I misread your location field as "below the bible belt" yesterday and had to do a quick double-take.

Umm, aren't rectangles and squares the same thing? My algebra teacher explained to me about how they are the same, and sqaure is just the perfection of a rectangle... Ok, nevermind, I probably just made myself sound like a complete idiot...

I'll open the box.

Squares and rectangles are actually subsets of a larger group of shapes called parrallelograms with the distinction that all the angles are right angles. Squares have the further distinction of all sides being the same length.

Off of the top of my head...
Quadralateral - a four-sided polygon
Parallelagram - a quadralateral with opposite sides being equal and parallel
Rectangle - parallelagram with all angles being 90 degrees
Square - a rectangle with all sides having equal lengths

Trapezoid anybody?

In other news, I am very close to nailing bending pipes and what-not with Displace. Just another thing or two to figure out. Not quite a Monster Technique just yet, but close.

It's a shallow GIF, so the jaggies are out in full uniform.

Good one, Warjournal, but the heirarchy should go:
polygon->parrallelogram->quadrilateral parallelogram->rectangle->square

But that's just being anal (retentive, you sickos ).

Another possible method is to use Filter > Distort > Wave with a very high wavelength and only a few generators. Adjust the amplitude so that it looks right; it should probably be quite low. This will cause a "bent" image, but won't have alot of proportional distortion. It's a decent method.

Of course, almost any method for creating the original object can be curved from the very beginning. This is probably the best alternative. If you provided some examples, perhaps we could suggest some better methods about the construction of the object, rather than editting the result. I hope that makes sense...

Remember from your lessons in logic:

All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

The problem with taking an existing pipe and then bending it in a circle is that the light source will be all around the image. This is a problem if the rest of the image has the light coming from the usual direction of top-left.

What you can do is to use the pipe tutorials with a circular selection. Here's one at neofrog: http://www.neofrog.com/tips/pipe.html

Instead of using the pen tool in the beginning, use a circular selection. You should get the following result:
