I just recently got a job teaching a class an advanced photoshop 6.0 course. 7 people in all, $60 each. There is alot of resource material that I want to give them, and so I have some questions to ask of anyone who can answer them.

1. What are two terms (and their definitions) you think should be in a glossary of photoshop?

2. The Burn, Dodge and Sponge tools, what are they for and how do they work?

3. Can you explain the basis of the levels dialogue. I cna see what it does, but i don't know how.

Those are my last three concerns for this course. I start on Monday 13/08/01. Wish me luck!

In the beginning, there was the word...and the word was 'God', although by the time it reached the other end of the phone line... the word was 'Gznd'

First off. Congrats, that`s cool.

then. 1) Channels, and Masks

2) <from the help file>The toning tools consist of the dodge tool and the burn tool. Used to lighten or darken areas of the image, the dodge and burn tools are based on a traditional photographer's technique for regulating exposure on specific areas of a print. Photographers hold back light to lighten an area on the print (dodging) or increase the exposure to darken areas on a print (burning).
The sponge tool subtly changes the color saturation of an area. In Grayscale mode, the tool increases or decreases contrast by moving gray levels away from or toward the middle gray.

3)The Levels dialog box lets you correct the tonal range and color balance of an image by adjusting intensity levels of the image's shadows, midtones, and highlights. The Levels histogram serves as a visual guide for adjusting the image's key tones.</from the help file>

the sliders at the bottom control the hughest and lowers values in teh image.

But I get the feeling you knew this much already.

To address #2. The dodge, burn and sponge tools come straight from the darkroom. Working with color the burn tool will darken areas, the dodge tool will brighten and the sponge will increase/decrease saturation. In the darkroom the dodging and burning was.. er still is I spose.. accomplished by waving something that looks like the dodge tool between the print and the enlarger to adjust exposure time to individual areas of the print. Not sure about the sponge but I believe that technique is applied while the print is in the developing solution.. could be wrong though- never used a darkroom.
