I would like to modify a photo to make it look really old and weathered, but it just isn't turning out right. I remember seeing something about it here once, but it seems that it is gone now. Perhaps someone can give me some input?

Thanks in advance!

1. get duct tape
2. firmly secure to front license plate
3. ignore for a couple thousand miles
4. change oil
5. don't wash hands
6. remove photo being carefull to tear edges when removing tape
7. have a cup of coffee while admiring your work- spill some on the photo for a sepia effect (optional)

here is a quicker method then cyoung's viable plan. try using the highpass filter yet? try copying the photo layer so you can edit it, use the high pass filter, then make another layer with some browns in it. or remove all the color from the photo, and use the browns in another layer... set the layer to overlay, and play with the opacity... For some reason, I don't think I'm making much sense...

OK.. figured I had to at least try the photoshop solution, otherwise I'd just come off like.. oh nevermind. This took like ten seconds but maybe it's what you're after. Increased contrast, added noise, hue/saturation. With a little work on scratches, stains and the like it could look like a florida ballot if you wanted. before and after

If this is the effect you`re going towards, its 5 layers.

to

1) original
2) clouds, B/W, multiply mode, 39 % opacity.
3) another clouds layer, B/W, screen, 24% opacity
4) layer with cracks painted on it.
5) Layer filled with R-186 G- 153 B-100 hard light mode, 95% opacity.

It`s rough, but you get the idea. From here you can merge the cloud layers for a little different effect., adjust curves on ( preferably a copy of ) the original .. or maybe use the unsharp mask to pixel it up a bit, change any of the settings listed.

If this is not the effect you were going towards...never mind.

Boldly going nowhere

<edit> forgot the pics, and cyoung beat me to it anyway</edit>
