I have always wanted to design a cartoon type character, but have difficulty when it comes tot he detail of things, for instance, dcreases in clothing, how do you decide where to put them and how do you go about creating that effect ? Can anyone offer some advice please ?

Put some clothes on and look in the mirror.

Seriously though, you need to start thinking about how material looks and acts. It's light but it is affected by gravity. This should help you identify where some of the inital folds and creases should be. Clothes also have seams, buttons, elastic, laces, zips and iorned creases which all affect how the material will fall over your characters limbs and body. The thickness of the material itself will also affect how the material falls.

Oh, and remember the bit about the mirror. Real life is always the best reference.

Edit: it all comes down to an 'e'

cartoon characters tend to lack in great detail , and as such a lot of creases tend to be created at the joints of the body, that is, the elbows, hips, knees, shoulders. They seem to used to indicate material to me.

The more detail you add to a character the more creases are used. Dracusis's idea of examining your self in a mirror is a good one. Get a feel for how clothes fold and crease in various stances.

Post what ya come up with. ~Vp~
