Hello,
I need help with a button... I can't seems to figure out how to create a simple enough one (going for simple here) on a black background. Maybe I'm suffering from too much time in the working and a good step away would be beneficial... (yeah right, wish I could afford that luxuray).
Here is what I am after... see the "login" at the bottom right of the gif.

Thanks!

Are you just asking how to duplicate the type of graphic in the .gif you posted? If so, it's pretty simple. Assuming you've got a separate black background layer:

Create a new layer. Draw a selection the shape of your desired button. Since we're duplicating the button in your example, we need rounded corners, so SELECT>>SMOOTH and enter your corner radius (the higher the number, the bigger your curves will be). Fill it with the color of your choice. Now SELECT>>CONTRACT and choose just a few pixels, maybe 3. Hit Delete (or EDIT>>CLEAR, if you love your mouse that much) to knock out all but the edges of your original shape. Now you've got a rounded outline box sitting on your black background. Slap some text in there and you're golden.

If you've got Illustrator, this is even easier -- just use the rounded rectangle tool, pick a stroke color, and you're done. Copy, switch to PS, Paste, choose "Pixels," and bingo. I generally draw all my shapes in Illustrator and copy them across.

No sig yet -- gimme some time.

..actually, i created that.
I'm looking to add some dimension to the existing "login" button below. But am not quite sure how to go about it.... I have tried using channels / blurs / and lighting effects to achieve a button, but i haven't come up with anything that looked good.
Thanks!

Is this what you mean ?

Everybody has the right to no taste

<edit> Oops, forgot the *how to* part (just in case).
CTRL+click the button layer, select the marquee tool, nudge with arrow keys up 2, left 2
CTRL+ALT+click button layer, nudge back to original position.

Fill w/white on new layer. gauss blur 2 px.

repeat process only nudge down, right..fillw/dk. grey

CTRL+ click button layer, invert selection ( CTRL+SHIFT+I ) select both new layers one at a time, press delete to remove blur outside button.</edit>

( thanks, DG )
