Can anyone riddle me this:

When I create a path that is absolutely perfect, the way I want it, then save it as a custom shape, that shape, previously with beautifully smooth edges, comes out with not-so-smooth edges when I use the shape tool to bang one out.

why it wanna do dat? what can I do to make it better? I've already tried kicking the computer, didn't help.

Maybe you need to click off the Shape Layer so the path isn't showing. That's the only thing I can think of.

Ok how are you going about banging out that "custom shape".
Try this...Make your path. Click on that path in the path pallette. Go to Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color...pick whatever color when the dialog box pops up. With that layer now "hilighted" go to Edit>Define Custom Shape.
Does that work for ya?

Maybe you're zooming in? Can you post a screenshot? Have you turned the anti-aliasing on? What's the regular speed of an unloaded swallow?

Jeni, youdaman! Cookies. If you can tell me *why*... more cookies!

I just made the path, clicked on it in the paths palette and went to edit/define custom shape when I was doing it... wonder why the layer fill thing makes a difference?

Because I think that when you were doing it before, you were filling a layer with a selection. That would mean that the end result is pixel-based....not scalable (bigger) without jaggies and degradation....Shape layer is vectors so that means that you can define your shape tiny or big and make it giganto or teenie weenie and everything's kosher
Glad it worked!

jeni - i think you should write the next ps help book!

make it giganto or teenie weenie and everything's kosher

this sort of writing would make it LOTSA fun!

well, I went back through some of my old vector shape I had made and they are all fine, and as far as I know, I had used the same method I defined above, seeing as how your technique was unknown to me you can be sure I didn't do them that way. This is weird.

as for the regular speed of an unloaded swallow... I really don't have the foggiest, were you asking me? BTW what is a swallow normally loaded *with*? I can'r imagine.

You can bet though that now that I have a defined process that works (yeah, prolly says how in the manual ) I shan't deviate from it.

thanks again

JKMabry... the unloaded swallow thing is a poke at Monty Python. Your responce would get you thrown into the pit. You should have said (all together) African or European?
