Excellent colors. Nice warmth coming from it, and nice use of light/shadow. The texture is good too...reminds me of a tim hildebrant painting.

That being said, the shape is a bit off. For starters, it seems too short. I would elongate it somewhat, and try to tone down the 'bulbous' feel of it. My anatomy vocab is failing me here, so bear with me - the upper edge of the flesh above the nostril seems like it could use a bit more deifnition as well. It blends a little too smoothly.

And lastly, the long highlight on the left edge of the nose seems a little too far to the left. It actually flattens the appearance rather than add the depth that it should. I think if it was moved to the right a touch, and possibly toned down slightly it would help a great deal.

Yep, you're right about the highlight, I've been noticing that more and more myself.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that the eyelashes have "split ends." He's got problems in that area you know....

Okee, krets asked me in ICQ specifically about the nose structure here, so I won't discuss the eye placements, or lash problems right now

First, the skin textures are looking good. A bit rubbery, but still with good variance. The tones are warm and well balanced. Good job Matt.

The largest problem that I see is the "cartoon" nature of the nose. This comes from it's rather bubbly/rubbery appearance. Dependent on the mood trying to be conveyed, or the softness of the features, this can be a plus, but in a study like this, it just lends to a certain unreality.

I snagged krets' effort here and played a bit (really quickly though, sorry no paintover). You'll see in the reworking, that the nose has been thinned out, and the defining shapes have been sharpened. Some of the dropoffs have been lightened, and blended, while others have been marked out to give more depth. Jamie was bang on about the highlights flattening the nose structure. This was just a misjudged placement of the perspective contour. Moving it, and softening the transition shows that Matt's highlighting was well done, if misplaced.

The tip of the nose has been sharpened, as well as raised, to takje away from the drooping/rubber look. Remember that the nose is a structure OF the face...not ON the face. The septum attaches to the frenulum area so that the nose "lifts" from the lips.

We've all been taught to see the nose as a separate structure of the face (Draw a face..needs eyes, nose, lips, ears, hair..done???) Integrating it as just sharp raised shapes and structures OF the face causes us to see the shaping differently.

This is just a first step (Izzy's nose tutorial should be done in a bit here) but it's a positive step Matt...keep going, sharpen up your shapes, and avoid those meandering curves that soften the structure too much.
