does anyone know of a quick way to get a stoney texture in gray with a little play with filters and/or layer effects.
no paintin please.

I stink Doc has a tutorial like that over at Hands-On.

The gist of it is.

1. Run Render > Difference Clouds on a new channel.
2. Now use that channel as an alpha channel for lighting effects.

i wanna use it on a stonehenge like building.
and should have a middle gray color. somewhere round 127.

Actually, filter->stylize->emboss might be something to try as well. And don't forget that great property of the clouds filter: if you make the image size 512x512, or a multiple thereof, then the clouds will tile perfectly.

I recently created a piece with stone block walls, I used a combination of render clouds, noise, and Texture>Craquelure, the Emboss filter adds a little roughness to the noise if your looking for that, craquelure creates a slate texture...

But I only found what I was looking for by playing with a variation of these filters...
Finish up with lighting effects and you got somethin' goin' on!

Alright, I came up with something. Here's how I did it:

1. fill bg with 50% gray
2. 2 colors 50% gray and 35% gray -> render clouds + difference clouds twice
3. Filter -> Sketch -> Bas Relief: Detail 13, Smoothness 3, Light Direction Top left
4. Filter -> Noise -> Add Noise, uniform, 3%, monochrome
5. Adjust Levels -> Input levels: 88 1.00 199
6. New layer - fill with black - Filter -> Noise -> Add Noise, 20%, gaussian
7. Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur, 90 degs, Amount 999
8. Set layer mode to Screen, Filter -> Distort -> Ocean ripple, size 9, magnitude 9
9. New layer - fill with white - set to multiply, Filter -> Noise -> Add Noise 20%, gaussian
10. Filter -> Noise -> Despeckle twice

Done There's so many things that can be different to make different textures, but that's how I did mine.

Well, if you want it to tile then the best way to go would be with the clouds filter.

Start with an image size that's a multiple 128. As the clouds filter always tiles on that dimension. For eh image below I used 256 x 256. Started with the clouds filter, mid grey and light grey colours. Just started playing with it. Duplicate, rotate, add noise, erase bits, grab small colour selections, add a tiny bit more noise to that layer. Lighting effects here and there to this and that layer.

Although, with lighting effects make sure you use a directional light or it won't tile well. The Stylise -> Emboss filter can some in handy as well, but don't take the height above 1 or 2 otherwise you'll get some wacky seams when you tile it.

If you want to test how it tiles go to Filters -> Other -> Offset and offset it (With wrap around edges) by half the height and half the width (128 and 128 for mine).



I also jumped in with the sharpen tool here and there to fix up some bits that were looking a bit too much like clay which can happen a lot with the lighting effects filter. (My example image could do with a bit more sharpening actually) Yet most of the clayness can be fixed with the emboss filter as you can get some nice crisp bump maps with it. Duplicate a layer, de-saturate, emboss, set to overlay = instant bump map! Although you might need to play with the brightness a little - when you set a greyscale layer to overlay anything that's 50% grey won't do anything; lighter greys will lighten the below a little, darker grays will darken it, as you'd expect.

Eh, yah, just play around with it (I'm talking about the image here). Keep adding layer after layer, duplicate here and there. Then merge again, ducplate some more and keep going. I wouldn't worry too much about building backdoors with something like this, just hack into it and have fun!

Edit: Oh yah, always keep in mind that it need to tile so don't go erasing bit's from the edges! Either erase from the middle areas then offset and erase again or create a new clouds layer and make a colour selection on it then use that to cut bits out.

Also make sure you use the offset filter every now and then to check that it still tiles. Here's the above image ofset 128 x 128:

I think if you combine my texture with Dracusis' you'll have the Stonehenge texture you were looking for
