Ok, a theme........

let's go with 'medieval fantasy'

pretty broad topic...anything that remotely fits will work. Conan style, D&D, historically acurate subjects....whatever your pleasure.

Did you ever take an art class on sketches of some sort? Or are you self taught?

I took art classes throughout highschool which taught me nothing except how much of a complete moron my teacher was.

I've taken a couple of college level art classes, years ago. Much better learning experience, but of course the best learning is in the doing. Live models certainly help that along a great deal.

One of the most important things of course, is being told when you're doing it wrong. Which is why I despise much of the "feedback" around these parts. The honest critiques that demand more than a passing talent waned long ago. They are now few and far between and half the time the person giving such a review is flamed.

Go figure.

But I would say that I am primarily self taught, with some help here and there. Most of the help being in the form of someone telling me to get on the ball and quit fucking it up.

=)

OK, so perhaps a little too complicated for 30 minutes?

How about we change themes then....

to.....Nature. Give me flowers, insects, landscapes, acorns...

Sound better? More doable in a half hour anyway...

No no, I like this theme.

I'll do something for it soon. It doesn't have to be character based does it? How about buildings, huts, weapons, nekid chicks, monsters yet again. Seems like a rather borad theme to me.

Oh oh, when you said "Live models certainly help that along a great deal" reminds me of a really funny story.

My former house mate who has just finished his BA with Honors in fine arts did a lot of life drawing from live models. Amyways, one day walking into colledge he saw this realy cute chick and just got talking with here. He was really early for his class so he asked her to coffee, she accepted. Anyways, he got her phone number and then went off to class. That class was nude life drawing and guess who the model was. Which isn't a good thing, how can you ask someone out after studying their naked form for several hours?... Suffice to say he didn't have the nerve to call her after that.

Something like that would take me hours to draw, and then i wouldnt be able to do it cause i dont have enough drawing experience to actually think it up right then jot it down so that it looks good. I took 1 thats right 1! art class in high school and pride myself for my minor artistic accomplishments like tracing a horsey in the 4th grade lol

How are you guys coming up with these awesome sketches so quickly? Some of them are nicely detailed (I love your wiz, DL-44). It was a struggle for me to finish this fairy on time and I ended up going over by about 5 minutes - i basically just scribbled in the highlights to finish and she didn't get a face. Maybe I'm making them too big, or just need a lot of practice (most likely).. it's been a long time since I've drawn anything other than a doodle.

Okay.... perhaps a follow-up post is in order.

Using images as refrences is completely healthy in the learning process of drawing or painting...
I've done it many times.... as I'm sure every other person on here has. Often one's style is influenced by a favorite artist that they have imitated in the past numerous times.
However.... it's my interpretation that the Speed Painting threads are meant to open the gates to creativity... and new ideas. An exercise of the art and mind, if you will.
That said...... a referenced piece still has it's place here.

There's nothing wrong with the image... and I'm not saying that effort did not go into it as well.
But don't degrade the effort that everyone else puts into their images, by leading people on in this manner.
Some might see this as a case of piss-poor manners.

Let me rephrase my insane and dishonorable ass for a second:

I started drawing an archmage, didn't like it. I erased everything on my paper. I looked for more 'concept' art thank you emps. I saw the necromancer, I thought to myself "How could I draw this in 30 minutes and still make it look good?" About 15 minutes into the drawing I realized it was going to take more than a half an hour. Noticing my staff looked like shit, I added more too it and then didn't draw the swords. It ended up being around 35-40 minutes give or take a few. Sorry, next time I'll draw something off the top of my head.

I do a lot of pictures with references, and I don't know any artists that don't. For example, my goal this year is to get down anatomy pretty well, to the point of not having to use a referance very often. Right now, I use tons of referances and pictures that I find off the internet in various places, and sometimes I'll freehand a drawing from a referance, or other times I will trace the outline of a drawing then fill in the rest of the anatomy for practice.

I don't see anything wrong with using Metzen's picture (I'd assume, he does most of the Blizzard art) as a referance, but at least say something about it, I mean, if I did a drawing of a dragon freehanded/semi-traced from someone of elfwood and copied it pretty exactly, I'd at least say something or post a link.

Just my opinion, don't have to regard it.

Quite.

I'm interested to see your picture. Copying another picture by hand demonstrates some that you have some skills with pen and pencil (I know when I was your age I did similar things) but you might as well have posted us the link to the original image. I was under the impression this wasn't just about producing a nice image but about having an idea and then realising it in a short space of time demonstrating imagination, creativity, talent, etc. You've entered previous version of this 'contest' so you clearly have the above (whereas I don't) so you are short changing yourself as well as us.

So lets put that behind us - any chance of one of your compositions on this theme?

A quick observation if I may...

I have not submitted anything because... well... I cant draw worth a hoot. I can paint... but not draw. To do a quick Painting, one needs to be able to draw really fast so one can commence with the painting... I cant make a sketch I deem worth to post here in 30 minutes... let alone paint it. But I have been practicing after seeing all the work put into these threads.

See DL-44? That man can draw. And that about covers that.

That's part of what makes exercises like this so great - it *makes* you learn to do things quickly. Of course, you're not going to see master pieces here. But you're not supposed to. Capture the idea, the essence, the form, the color...whatever aspect.

One thing we used to do in class that was really great - before we'd get started on the 'big' drawing for the day, the model would run through a random series of 1-2 minute poses, and you'd sketch each one as simply as possible to capture the form of the pose. Sometimes using block shading, sometimes using a series of clean heavy lines that would follow whichever curve of the body, sometimes quick comic book style.

Very helpful. =)

It's called "gesture drawing" in art classes. To capture the "gesture" of a figure... It's a good thing to do to practice drawing skills. Take your sketch book with you everywhere and make spontaneous drawings. You'll find you get better over time.

I keep meaning to submit something to this, but I'm always browsing the Asylum from work, I never think about it from home. And I consider myself a fair scribbler, but I can't do CRAP with a mouse. Alas, the tablet lives at home... Perhaps I'll have 30 minutes this weekend. This is one of my favorite themes...

I really like that last one DL. Good work!

I remember in class we even had 15 second poses to sketch. Of course the result did not have any details at all, but it still felt like a useful way to learn how to capture the very most basic of different poses.

I can't draw very well either, nor can I paint well. This is different though - general shape, basic shading. It doesn't require the same observational skills, or steady hand, its really a matter of starting large, use huge brush strokes, and shrinking down to hide your mistakes.

Example, This(~60k) is what mine looks like while painting it.
