It was bound to happen. Using Mahlqa's Patented Fire Technique to build a D-Map. What can I say?

I got the bug pretty bad last night. I got a very solid start on it, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to finish it. Even though it's not finished, I would appreciate any thoughts on what I have so far. You know, give me a head start on the first edit.

I'm sure most of you folks know where it's going and finish it up by yourselves before I get the chance to finish the tutorial.

meanwhile back on track:

WJ nice effect, could be a cool way to make the whole figure look like something from predator (infrared images) not just a halo effect... nice variation on mahqa's theme

Mahjqa, I fixed your nick in the tut, but I'm too lazy to edit my original post. At least I misspelled it consistantly. If it makes you feel any better, people on the 'net are constantly mistaking me for being female no matter what nick I use. Figger that out. Although, that hasn't happened around here that I know of.

I'm pretty sure I'm finished with this one for now. Be doing some editing in the coming days or months.

The final looks pretty crappy. If you make it look better by adding frames and more colours, the file size will might make the graphic useless - I'm talking over 200k with out breaking a sweat.

I'm curious though, what could one do with this tut? Is there anything in particular someone could use it for?

You mean aside from creating animations of constanly morphing structure that seems to flow almost chaotically, yet seamlessly in a three dimensional plane of displacement?

Oh probably nothing.

Thinking about flags and wind and explosions yet wj?

If you know how to use your head, other than what DG said, you can do all sorts of things. A few months ago I did some dancing vertical lines using a stripped down version and it was great. Vertical lines getting their groove on for only a few kilobytes.

I did do an explosion-esque thing the other day. Did it just like I said way back when Mahjqa's fire tutorial was tearing up the sig forum. It came out decent enough. I even wrote a decent chunk of text of how to do it. Might eventually end up on Tech-Slop, but I doubt it.

And thanks, DG, for mentioning 'flag' and 'wind' in the same sentence. I still have nightmares about that awful tutorial. Just plain wrong on so many levels. I e-mailed that guy once and gave him an earfull.

No!
I will not think about animating the flag!

You scare me with this stuff ... both of you. Between WJ and Mahjqa I'm about ready to play.fiddle.quit. What's the point? You guys have already figured out EVERYTHING that can be done!!

I wonder if you could get this to make good animated water...

MindBender these guys started the same way as everyone else, and just practiced played fiddled and tweaked, (OK so they do it better than most) but WS is right, every once in a while, someone comes up with something, and ya jaw drops...

warjournal, that's a pretty cool tutorial. Seems to me this technique could be used to simulate water as well as heat waves. A couple of months ago I combined mahjqa's fire animation technique with his liquid technique (the one on how he did the lava lamp) to make an interesting candle-flame. It still may be on-line in the sig forum. If I have time I'll try the same thing with displace and post the results.

A little bit of fiddling on my side....

The displacement map I used was this:

You see that the pattern repeats every 7 pixels. for every frame of the animation, I shoved the pattern upwards one pixel, so that the animation repeats every 7 frames.

The pattern itself was made with noise, and then motion blur over it (horizontal, 12 pixels)

It's a bit too bad that I used a picture without much definition, especially in the sand/sky areas.

Maybe if you darkened the map a bit( increase the contrast), it would displace the lower contrast areas better ...

Just a thought.

Before I forget:
Shut up, Krets!

I did the water thing a long time ago. Several variations and *very* pleased with all of them. However, I didn't find it interesting enough to talk about. I recommend 2-channel and some Gauss to soften it up.

Mahjqa, I can't really see what you did. Too subtle for my crappy monitor and resolution. I'll do it for myself one of these days because I bet it's tasty.

******** [15 minutes later]

Little one woke up, and I just fed her a bottle and put her back to sleep. Now I can't remember what else I had to say. Maybe I'll remember in the morning after some sleep. Maybe not.
G'nite, folks.
