whatever validity my judgment may have at the moment, i saw this site when i was perfectly sober and still rocked my socks off. right now it's simply awesome work. this is an enormous improvement over 1.o + 2.o, and it's apparent right off the bat.

I've loved that damn title graphic from the beginning, i'm glad to see it air.

mikey - just visited your new site and was totally blown away.
I know what I like and what I see... heh..I like.
You do have a great eye, great color sense. composition...what the hell
I'm no critic...just great work...keep it going , you are on the right path....

nurse.............
oh yea, and by the way Joseph Cornell IMHO is truly one of the best.
He has inspired me in more ways than I can count... his boxes,collage...
refreshing to see his name mentioned.
If I may name drop.. another Canadian artist, who I have followed over the years and who I think you may enjoy, is Tony Urquhart...makes incredible boxes and images . http://arts.uwaterloo.ca/FINE/tonyu/tonyu1.htm

What? V2.0 lasted all of 10 minutes eh? Well this one is better, they all get better. I think the thing that impresses me the most is the loading time on your designs dwindles even further per release and that's a rare and nice thing these days. This may load a *little* slower than 2.0 but compared to what you get for the wait, much faster. The inset photos are a very nice touch.

If I don't like something it's gotta be the strip down the right, but I'm not even entirely sure about that.

Cool.

Mikey, your new web site looks AWESOME! (but you already knew that, heh )

Anyway, I have one small suggestion... Personally, I don't like very much when popup windows pop-up on different locations that depend on web browser, so my suggestion would be to make them pop-up at the center of screen.

Since showing code is much better than explaining, here's a universal JavaScript function which you can use to achieve this:

function _window(fileURL, windowName, winWidth, winHeight) {
var top = (screen.availheight - winHeight)/2;
var left = (screen.availwidth - winWidth)/2;
newWin = window.open(fileURL, windowName, "toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,status=0,menubar=0,scrollbars=0,resizable=0,width="+winWidth+",height="+winHeight+",left="+left+",top="+top);
newWin.moveTo(left, top);
}

And simply call it like this:

<A HREF="javascript:_window('bla.html', 'myWin', 640, 480);">GO! GO! GO!</A>

Also, there's one more issue with popup windows... You've maybe noticed that when you launch popup window and after that switch back to some othe window leaving popup window open when you try to open it again by clicking on the link it won't appear on top other windows, and some poeple won't realize what's happening (they often forget to look at the taskbar). Anyway, there's a solution for this, too. Simply modify the <BODY> tag of all pages that pop-up to look something like this:

<BODY ONLOAD="this.focus()">

That should be all...

thanks for the response everyone... between what i've read here and a few e-mails, i guess i pulled this design off somewhat decently.

analog: you realize you don't have to consume that many drugs, right?

kromaz: thanks a lot for the kind words, that means a lot coming from you considering how much i enjoy your work. i was introduced to joseph cornell a while ago and must say he as inspired some of my pieces greatly, i've got some new stuff sketched out i'd like to work on and a lot of it borrows from his technique. i'll go check out urquhart right now, thanks for the link.

warmage: thank you, thank you.

jk: 2.0 was arse, ugh. when you go to your site everyday and hate it, kind of inspires you to do something new. anyways it's over and i can finally relax, the past month has been a little stressful thanks to coming up with a replacement for 2.0.

max: thanks a lot for the code, i'm not too worried about where the windows appear.. but i'm definitely going to play with that onload=this.focus trick later on tomorrow when i get some time. actually i'll probably mess with where the windows appear too, hehe thanks.

slime: yeehaw thanks.

buncha: i'm sorry i didn't make this design suck enough.. maybe you could just resort to character insults instead? i've got plenty of faults there =)

thanks again everyone...

though i have nothing but respect for everything that went into this design...and i agree with absolutely everything stated above....i long for variety in the design; as i drill deeper, i feel there should be some form of visual cue that i am, indeed, drilling deeper....color change? side-bar change? something change? please? mayhap i'm being picky. i love the design, though...i just want more from it.

jumpin jesus on a pogo stick, finally!

though i'm disappointed i received such a short critique from you twitch (i was just hoping i'd get an especially delightful one while you were having a nicotine fit), you did hit on one of the things that i've considered myself. the original intent was for every page to have a different scrolling side bar, but the skulls worked out rather well and i never came up with 3 other side-bars that were as comparable.

i plan on tweaking this design as time goes on and adding more variety to the different sections is one goal.

then again, the main "market" of my site, once again, is for the people who read my journal.. it's working well now and i'm not going to mess with the new formula too much.

::cough:: oh yeah, waiting for your site.. i mean sheesh, you hyped it for so long that it's a little disappointing that it's not here.

It looks pretty good Mikey. I like the use of the drop shadow and how you positioned the buildings and etc. The color scheme is nice. The buttons also look nice. Im having a hard time making out what that is underneath the sun like object but besides that your use of everything is good. Very few sections. I'd like to see more but its your call. The graphic to the right of the text is somewhat annoying. Interesting how you name your computers.

Enuff credit ... FUCK YOU Just thought I'd add that in ...

Well, since you seem to be begging for something other than (obviously unrequired) ego-fueling, here I go.

I have two compliments and then I'll get to the good stuff. Well done picture insets. I like the big orange thing at the top.

The layout of this site SUCKS! Why can't designers get a clue and start eliminating dead space? You have enough content to expand your site to 100% width - if not, then you can afford to be "creative" and demonstrate some interesting visuals as filler - I really have no interest in looking at all that blue background. Wee.

Where's the Flash? You can't tell me that with all that studio equipment and "I'm a badass showing off my skillz" attitude that you don't at LEAST have a Flash intro?

And DAMN, you call this content:
"for cereal around this place i'm usually limited to total raisin bran and some tree-hugger shredded wheat stuff. i usually don't mind eating the raisin bran stuff since it's better than the chunky wheat pucks, but tonight i was shocked to discover a box of total honey and brown sugar flakes. "
WAAaahaha. Give me a break! If you're going to write a journal online, MAKE UP STUFF! At least make your life *seem* interesting.

I swear, the only reason people here like your site is because they are addicted to orange.

hm. I didn't know you were fat! sheesh, maybe your eating too much of that raisin bran....

Anyway, sorry to say that I also like it mikey.

The design is spectacular in my opinion...very clean, very crisp....the space is well layed out, broken up just the way it should be (and happens to look the same at low or high resolutions unlike things spec'd at 100% width).
Vibrant colors, lot's of attention to details.

Like twitch said, a little variety on the inside wouldn't hurt, but it sure is nice to look at.

Gotta agree that I really am not interested in the contents of your cupboards.....but then again that would mean that I'm not your target audience, so who cares if I'm interested...right?

Meta -- flash intros usually do little other than waste bandwidth (IMHO of course).

krets: new designs are always a good thing, hit it up man. except they make you cranky and in the end almost seem pointless, but maybe that's just me.

jestah: thanks a lot, and a big 'fuck you' to you too!

buncha: 2:07am, right? well considering i was out from 6pm - 2am (which translates into 8 hours of partying for those of you out there that are a little slow) is more than enough of a life for me. i just don't take the right drugs to pull 16 hour stints anymore, oh well.

meta: you're funny... you're the only person silly enough to wish the content was fully expanded out. maybe you like 100% width that makes everything typically look like shit, but us "designers without a clue" actually like things that remain visually appealing no matter what computer is being used by a viewer. flash? flash is what shitty designers rely on, thank you drive through--perhaps 5% (and that's being generous) of the flash i've seen on the web is actually worth having on a site. as for the journal, well you read it sucker... and with 30-40+ different people reading the journal daily, i'm not too worried what you think.

twitch: i may be fat but at least i have a web site instead of a bunch of sorry-ass excuses, you tosser.

dl: yeah i know the content is a little lacking right now, that's something that will be added over time.. front page w/ icons is going to be reworked, i'll probably change up graphic sidebars once i can make 3 more solid ones, yadadada. as for content, well yeah.. you probably don't fall in the target audience of girls age 17-22, haha.. or something like that, right.

i'm going to go puke phlegm now, thank you come again.

You'll have a nice, thundersome wakeup call. May you survive it and become the artist you think you are now! 30 people read your journal? Hee haw! Yeah, and I was one of them. Woops! Sorry for looking at your site before reviewing it. Ya wank!

As for all you 100% people, you are really clinging to the easy way out. It is REALLY FRIGGIN HARD to design a site at 100% that looks decent at 800x600 and 1024x768 both. But guess what! Flash is vector graphics! Wow! What's that? you mean all the content grows to fill the screen? Neato idea. Ok, you're right about the Flash intro - mostly useless. But as a design tool, it is so far beyond HTML in creative power and bandwidth efficiency that you can't deny it's presence.

Meta sounds like you should take some of your own advice. I looked at some of the sites you have designed and well, they mostly look designed for small rez. However, if you call putting a tiling background on there and watching it expand to fill an entire screen... more power to you.

meta: no really, i'm sorry if you think people are taking the easy way out by designing a nice looking site that looks exactly the same in all resolutions; but fuck it, the site looks good on my 1600x1200, or my friends 800x600. i'm having trouble following any sort of point you were trying to make though, yes we all know that flash is vector graphics... and? i'm glad you think i'm an ego bomb waiting to go off, but from where i'm sitting i'm doing just fine, thanks for the concern. and finally, if you're sorry enough that you have to rely on flash to make up for your lack of creativity when using html.. well that's your problem, don't make it mine.

What I don't like are those pop-ups. They make me feel like I have lost control. One or two is all I can handle. Your copyright notice text at the bottom, I think it would be better with a lighter color, like gray of some shade. I found it hard on the eyes. What else, well I like the orangeish themed graphics, bet you used adjustment layers there, huh? You have made a pleasing site, I like your style.

I stopped by the void, after waiting through the completely useless flash intro, spent 5 minutes waiting for the flash content inside to load......just to have another thing that I had to click on to actually accomplish anything....at which point I had various other things I could click that would take me........where? beats me....I didn't stick around to find out.

So if overdramatic slow loading poorly navigated flash sites are what you are saying is the superior route with web design.....I think I'll stick with sites that load relatively quickly, are layed out in a visually pleasing manner that is easy to navigate, and don't bog down my processor. Exactly DL! I think the point of large resolutions is to be able to have several windows open at once. Especially 1600x1200. If you are viewing webpages in a maximized window at that rez then you have problems my friend.

I have DSL now but back in the old days too much Flash would just make me leave. I mean, its all been done as far as Flash goes right now so what is the point of waiting for some 250K Flash amination to load if all it is is a bunch of text flying around the screen in an uncreative, unorganized way? If its good Flash like at rustedfaith then thats another story.
