Preserved Topic: The Art of Communication

hey kids.

what better place to post this than on the asylum? a few days ago, i started discussing this with a few local graphic designers, and the idea spread like a wild fire. the idea is a monthly or every-other-monthly submission that i will be running. here's the plan; i come up with an idea or word or phrase or something that means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. then, we design 1024x768 screens to convey the meaning that we have for this word/phrase/idea. then, after we get some notability, i start publishing the collections in books.

what better way to work on the idea of "content is king" and "graphic design is all about communication" than this? we'll work on the logistics of the pay-rate towards publication when it comes around to it. until that happens, the images remain the logical property of whomever developed them.

interested? the first word is one that means so absolutely much, and yet so absolutely little: "fuck." email submissions to me at steve@th-inknet.com, and we'll work from there. i'll start putting together the web site for it. it'll be hosted on my domain, so no one will have to worry about that.

Well, I'm trying to do fuck as tasteful as possible. It's really difficult to find porn that isn't really direct. I want skin but not THAT much skin.

Question for Twitch. Should I avoid putting other peoples photographs in my picture (such as porn)? Do I have to make my own porn for this thing?

If I'm following twItch's ideology here Reve.... HE is not looking for images. What he's asking is for is "uncut" brainstorming laid out as you go. For instance.... did you ever take a creative writing class in college or high school.... the professor might say.... WRITE FOR THE NEXT 25 MINUTES ON ANYTHING YOU WANT. Boom... you start writing and you go from one topic to the next with no real change. Here, it seems to be a similar concept..... Here's a word _______ ... sit down and let whatever drives you to react on that word and create it.

reve :: if it means porn to you (don't get me wrong, i understand), then convey how you react to it, how you want other people to react to it--convey the word. convey the emotion. communicate the idea.
taxon :: right; convey the meaning of the word, in whatever way you feel is appropriate.

all :: remember, the first word is "fuck." if you don't want to do one for this (either by inspiration loss or disagreement with the word) then you can wait until the next submission. the next one may be something like "joy" or a phrase like "ecommerce business model." who knows? it's all about conveying a word/phrase through images, which is, essentially, what we do as graphic designers.

and yes, i will have a web site up for this eventually. before march 01? dunno. we'll see.

Ok, taxon was talking about like just going into Photoshop and just throwing stuff down as it comes to mind in some sort of a brain storm frenzy, im not sure i could get a lot out of that, so im gonna think about it tonight and try to figure somrethin out. oh, i just wanted to say, porn isent the only way i could convey fuck, theres beating the fuck out of someone, telling someone to fuck off,but fucking just seems cooler

What I did was I went and found stuff that related to the word fuck in my mind and glued them together in my special way. It's still only about 1/4th done but damn cool if I do say so my self. And I have no actual fucking in my image BTW.

That's an awesome idea - count me in...i'm planning a similar endevour for those that wish to join...i'm gonna wait until my new site is up to announce it...

Basically one person starts a photoshop composition a size with a basic color and design layout this same file is passed to various artists...they may do whatever they like to this file keeping the same dimensions and concept...

hmm...fuck...when i think of the word fuck i guess i relate it to swearing in anger more than porn...

Yah, I agree with netmosis on this one, this is not a "porn" word to me, more and anger word that should be said with a sneer, dripping with disgust. when I first read your idea, I was hoping for more of a phrase or something, short anglo-saxon words, charged with emotion like this one will generate lots of similar concepts, IMO. I would have hoped for a word of much less graphic association, make us stretch our minds some, hmm? How about something like "Passion", which could cover the same ground, but could go *anywhere*? I think we should put more thought/discussion into the word/phrase before we start, I doubt I'll work much with a word like Fuck. YMMV.

Talked about a friend about this, and it seem that the f-word is not as graphic and emotionally charged for us that do not have english as our first language.

fuck is usaully said through clenched teeth or accompnied by something being thrown

if it means anger to you, then give me anger... i'm not going for one specific response on this, i want as many as possible...anger, lust, greed, indifference... there are so many. this word that we use means absolutely nothing by itself. when combined with even one other word, it's got meaning. that's why i think it's such a fabulous word.

I think the fact that it has generated such a wide variety of responses shows that it is a good word. These posts are headed in so many different directions that I think you'll get quite a diverse group of works.

i figure so folk can use the images (if the artist allows) as wallpaper, 1024x768 would be the ideal resolution to design in. by the by, the design of the page is also almost finished. i've got templates up. fun fun fun stuff.

Ok...here's my rough draft in 800x600...i'm still not quite out of the gift giving/recieving christmas spirit and my birthday is in two days so here ya go...it expresses anger towards the consumerism of christmas...not to mention it's kinda clever...not that great as a wallpaper, but at least it incorporates the word fuck...not necessarily any meaning of the word though...i did it quickly, so i wouldn't forget the idea...if i do a final i'll spruce it up, make lively, add more, etc...lemme know whatcha think...

omg! I so have the perfect idea! see i was upset the past week since the first half of my senior year was over, my parents let me turn the old pool house into a gym. me and my friends put down new carpeting and painted the walls. We ordered new gym equipment and set it up. We're not exactly manually inclined so after about 6 hours of setting up my second universal gym, things got irrate. good thing I was there with the digital camera getting all of it. Woohoo, now after all that, when I hear the word FUCK Ill always think of the last week. I should take pictures of the room ... deffinatly doesnt look like a gym.
