Ok I gotta vent on something.....

Just recently I sold a keyboard of mine through a FOR SALE ad I posted on www.harmony-central.com and got a call from several buyers. Eventualy I got 1 and decided to sell it to a guy in Nashville for 1300 buck.
So I sent it to him COD of course through UPS. Week later I get the check, give it to my wife to deposit, end of story right? WRONG.

Today I got a letter witht the check in the mail with a big red stamp on it... COUNTERFEIT. Godamnit!!!!!!

I called UPS to find out why would they not even look at the check when they do a COD and I got a "its not the drivers responsability to examine the checks." then I called the FBI and they said to call the NAshvill Police.
Called them, NOBODY ANSWERED THE DAMN PHONE!!!! At a police station!!!! Hows that shit!!!!

Anyways, I called my local law enforcement and they said I now have to go to the bank and file a counterfeit report. IS THER NO END????

I mean, shit.... if it was so easy for this idiot to do this, no wonder internet fraud is up majorly!

Oh and the phone number that I had for the idiot.... disconnected. (of course)

I HATE THIS!! I feel so taken. What an idiot I was. And this wasnt the first time either. In Feb I shelled out about 800 for some trading cards. (2 cases) and the bastard I ordered them from said, "I sent em. Too bad. "
I vow to never buy a thing from the internet again!!!!!!!

ok... i vented. I was just so damn pissed off when this happened. OH!! And to make things worse, it;s my birthday today.....

:-(

~sings Happy Birthday like Marliyn Monroe~ well since I can't sing might as well drag this fantasy out.....has a funky dress on like hers too

ummmmmm that totally sucks !!! I know everything I buy online must be paid with a credit card or bank cashiers check or money order. UPS held my last delivery and said... UPS will only take money orders or cashier checks on COD's...so why did he take a personal check.... maybe ask them that?

It was a cashiers check. (at least it looked like one.) The idiot looked like he scanned it and then printed it. Then printed over it in black with the other stuff.

thanks for the song......

Supposedly, the employees should have training in detecting forged checks, especially for COD orders. What you've described isn't exactly an internet fraud and would more likely be considered some sort of mail fraud since that was the main method of commerce.

As a caveat, I'd recommend against any COD orders at all and find another secure method of payment. Or even asking for half up front, and the rest when the merchandise is delivered.

There's a lot of room for abuse on the internet, so it always pays to be a "paranoid bastard" in all your internet transactions.

I feel for you, but don't just throw away the internet as a buying tool. Use PayPal, man.

Keep on 'em! Try Nashville PD again, and go to the Post Office (or their web site) and find out how to report mail fraud. Then, report it!

When you finally get the police/post office/whoever, give them copies of every bit of evidence you have. The disconnected phone number (had to be registered to someone), the address the keyboard was sent to (has to belong to someone), the counterfeit check (had to come from a bank somewhere, probably in Nashville). The only reason why these "people" are able to continue screwing people is because too often, it's more trouble for the victims to report it than the item is actually worth. Problem is, they'll just keep doing it until they have a reason (i.e. a jail sentence) to stop.

Even if nothing comes from your one case, if other people complain about this same person, they'll eventually take notice. A !@#%$ in San Diego who cheated a number of people on computer parts via Ebay was recently sentenced to jail time. He was arrested after a number of his victims turned in reports. It can happen, but only if you do your part to stop him.

Mail fraud has been a federal offense for a long time.. i once went to the local postmaster at my local postoffice with a complaint and he sat me right down and we filled out the paper work right then and there... i wouldn't be surprised if you got the same kind of attention.. umm, depending on how busy or bored your postmaster is

(sniffling...)

thanks for the support gang. I got a call from UPS to fax the counterfeit check to them. I know the routine though, I've watched Xfiles way too much.

Im sure theres a name attached to the phone number that I have. I m sure theres a name affiliated with the address I shipped it to. Somehow, someway this bastards gonna pay.

My wife constantly tells me that I am way to trusting. Guess I should have listened to my wife.. (WHAT????!?!?!)

yes.... its true.

I will keep you all posted as of my progress. If anything, maybe this can teach you all how to react when you get screwed like I did.

Number 1 rule! Always get the money first. Paypal is the best for interent. They have a lot of protection against stuff like this.

I would highly doubt you'll ever see the money or the keyboard again. My girlfriends mom's identity was stolen from here. They have video of the woman using her id, lots of reports, proof up the ass that this woman has been spending thousands of dollars and getting tons of credit cards in her name. Did they do anything? No, instead they went to her house and told her she was a suspect. Real fucking brilliant, I would be supprised if she didn't head for another country already. Bottom line, you will have to be more carefull next time, it's probably too late this time.

A guy once stole my sisters license plates off her car. There was surveilance evidence that he did it, yet whne he stuck then on his car, went round commiting crime after crime, she still had to foot the bill, despite the fact that she drives a little gold ford laser, and this guy was driving a big-assed torano. The police couldn't see the difference between her car and his.

I would agree with Wangenstein. Find out who the number was registered to. They have to have some kind of a record. Plus... COD?!?!?!!? are you nuts??? Use PayPal! (but I am sure you allready know that)
