Preserved Topic: **FEBRUARY 2003 SIG CONTEST**

The subject of the new sig contest is...

TATTOOS.

Basic rules, of course, are no recycles, keep the file size down. I would like to add a few guidelines for this particular theme:

1. Tattoos are not animated. I'm not saying animation is not permitted; I like animation. I'm just saying you don't want the tattoo itself to be waiving or hopping up and down. If you want to animate, I'm sure the creative folks here can figure out other ways of working that in without animating the tattoo itself.

2. Make it look like a tattoo. If you don't have a tattoo, look at some on line. Generally, they are either very solid and simple, almost logo-like, or, if they are detailed, you have to allow for some fading in the skin and etc.

3. If this is a tattoo that you actually have, let us know! (that's not a rule, just something cool to talk about).

Okay, be creative! You don't have to put the sig on skin if you don't want to, just make it clearly a tattoo-like design. Questions, let me know. Now go be beautiful.

Yes, no recycled sigs (previously used sigs), and no sigs that are not part of the contest. In fact, I'm turning mine off in here.

Although it's not the best, I'll come up with a better one later.

I'm not going to start a new thread at this point, because even the tattoos that are jokes are related to the Tattoo subject.

However, I would appreciate it if people would edit their messages to remove sigs that aren't entered in the contest. In the end, it makes it easier to sift through the entries.

I agree wht Odd Cat - there isn't any need for a new thread.

The silliness and blatant recycling (yes you know who you are) always dies down after a bit

even though yin yangs are over used in tats i always liked the symbolism of the reverse arrows, kindof representing the bucking of traditional methods, it came from the cover of this book. so i digress i suppose its not totally original but it was all drawn from scratch (and the fact i got my name in there was a happy accident

Tom. I would like to see any Tatoo-Artist get that amount of shading and detail anywhere on anyones body. I think if it were to be a tatoo you need to take it into photoshop and get rid of some of the detail. Tatoos tend to be a bit flatter than that. I think it is possible but it need some more work.

As a sig and work of art it is great, but as a tatoo I think it needs some work.

Warmage - I think you might be misunderstanding tom's posts...

They are not supposed to *be* tattoos...they are simply people *with* tattoos.

Celtic knotwork seems to be a popular tatoo theme in Columbus. Everyone of my friends who has a tatoo has at least one knotwork tatoo.

Another one from me although I did make this before but never used it anywhere. That seems to be the way with most of my sigs... I never use them, they just collect dust on some obscure internet page. Anyway, I updated it a bit for this month's contest but no prob if you guys still consider it recycled. It's actually a tattoo of mine.

Yeah, the knotwork tats are cool. I just got one that kinda mixes the elements of knotwork and tribal, myself.

Well, I'm not really sure about that, to be honest with you. I do know that the contest judge has the final say in any and all issues. Basically that means you're going to have to draw the line on this one. Just be prepared to stick by whatever decision you make.

That was my understanding but as Suho1004 said - it is your call. You can do pretty much what you want (within reason). You could decide that a degree of recycling is OK or you could only allow sigs that were made specifically for this contest.

In brief, though, this is not a tattoo contest, but a signature (graphic/text file placed at the end of one's post) contest based on tattoos, real or otherwise. A read through the FAQs above should explain things better.

You need a bit of a better displacement map, dreamer.

A: It goes over her clavicle (aside from the pain, it would bevel there)
B: Rounding off the way the words do, where they do, they'd run into her armpit and be covered when that arm relaxes (notice that it's slightly turned back at the shoulder joint)

Xdreamer, I think Tom was asking what you meant by a "small one": Small tattoo, small sig, or small breast. I'm sure it was meant as a joke.

As for size, that's a fairly big tat for the location! Not that this effects the competition, but OW with the collar bone! My last tat got really close to my clavicle, and THAT hurt!

Odd Cat: I would be careful saying things like that - jamie might hear you! Then who knows what sort of mess you'll get us into.

it is not commonly agreed that a name is needed in a sig. your name is on the left of every post you make, so it doesn't need to be on the bottom as well.
it does, however, need to represent you in some way, and often, having your name on it is a good start.

DL - I'll stick with tradition. A name is not required.

HOWEVER. It has to have something to do with the topic of tattoos. d3f4c3d: I don't see what that image has to do with the topic. Folks, please remove sigs that are off-topic. While you're certainly welcome to show your sigs here at the Asylum, non-contest sigs are better suited to a new topic outside of this contest.

Basically, I don't want to push with too many rules, but if it's supposed to be a tattoo, ask yourself if it looks like a tattoo. By that, I mean ask yourself if a tattoo artist could reproduce it, close to the same way you show it, on skin. Keep in mind the limits of the medium. This doesn't mean you have to actually show it on skin, although the entries that show it on a body part are perfectly acceptable. Even the joke sigs are acceptable; they are, arguably, on topic. I've got no problem with folks pushing the limits of the topic, but you have to be on topic in some way.

Okay, no more fussing. Those that are on topic have been cool so far. Keep them coming!

Tom, it's a bit jaggy, especially your name. Try and clean it up a bit. I'm sure the experts here can help you out with that, and I'm sure the FAQ has some info too.

Also, is he supposed to be writing your name, or tattooing it? Because if he's tattooing it, it's happening way too fast.
