Some quick questions in regards to my new pc.
1. Does the 100m distance on WiFi include walls ?
2. Should my new PC sound like an aircraft ? Its extremely loud. Any tips on how to make it quieter ?
3. Are new HDs supposed to run at really hot temperatures ? I ahve two new disks 120gb SATA and a ata133 160gb, both are untouchably hot when running, including my Radeon9800.

This new computer has really pissed me off, yea its fast, but its louder than the speakers and makes the room boiling hot and has no net connection as it can't pick up the wireless router (3Com 54mbps) the NIC is 11Mbps, would that be a prob?

Ok...I guess I am the expert around here on Wireless LAN - So I'll give your questions a shot.

1. NO! No way. And you would know this, if you thought about it for a bit. The Laws of physics say that is impossible, depending on the material. So, epending on the Material(s) that the walls are made of, the distance will be accordingly affected.

2. Umamama...what has that to do with Wireless LAN? I suspect, that it is one or more fans making the noise...right? Check to see, if something is maybe contacking the fan blades, or if the fan blades are contacting something in their rotation...normally, it shouldn't be as loud as an airplane.

3. Umamamama...dunno? Wow, that is a really off the wall question...I have no idea.

Check and see if your Router has a "Mixed Mode" or something like that, so that it can run in both 11 Mbit and 54 Mbit...and throw out the 11Mbit thingamajimme as soon as you can, and get a 54Mbit thingamajimme! It is faster...

But first of all, test the connection, from your 11 Mbit thingamajimme to the Router, by moving the Router right next to the computer! You do not need the Router to be connected to the internet, to test if you can connect to the configuration menu of the Router wireless. If you can, then start marking out the distance, using the 50% method...until the signal is gone...

If that is than a distance, less than you have the Router now...then you know what the problem is.

I was under the impression that 802.11g wasn't a standard yet..

Since posting I've figured out a few things. Its my case's fan which is the noisy begger, the case and power supply cost 40 euros. I think I know where they cut the costs, the cpu fan is goin a bit too fast as the heat distribution isnt great inside.

In regards to the wireless, Im posting this from my new PC. It works with the doors open ! So I recon Im going to have to position the router somewhere else, a half way point. It goes from 20% to 40% signal. I only actually need 0.5Mbit so its not awful. (Oh and moving either closer isnt really feasable the obstacle is a stairs). Fiddling with the Attennas helped too.

Basically I really need a better case, or at least a better power supply, its like a bloody hoover. Can anyone recommend anything ?

Still though the HDs remain fairly hot, but not increasingly so I'm thinkin maybe theyre meant to run that hot, I might get some form of cooling solution, I was under the imression all that stuff was for overclockers.

BTW, "The Laws of physics say that is impossible" . At a high enough frequency, walls wouldnt be much of a problem. WiFi is 27Mhz. Oh and I should have wrote "My new PC" as the topic, sry.

No, the laws of physics say, that metal tends to channel the frequencies away...I said depending on the material(s)! So, if there is metal in the walls (electrical wire, reinforcement, etc) they will have an effect. Have enough metal, and yes, it will be impossible. But that is besides the point - with the doors open, you have 40% signal strength? Sounds like the walls are damping the signal strength. That is normal, in my experience. Oh, and placing the Router high up, as close to the Ceiling as possible, will help, as well...as does turning the ears this way and that.

Petskull - dunno about the States, but in Germany, 802.11b and 802.11g are standard. There is a third, coming out...it is not standard yet.

Can't help ya on the actual case...I don't know what is best in that department...I normally chose what is cheapest...hehe.

If your PSU is causing all th noise, as they often do! then you may find one of these usefull.

I wouldn't worry about changing case, unless you really feel it would make a difference, even if you do buy a newer case, the PSU supplied with that may be just as bad.

Cheers,

Blaise
