Well, the Asylum doesn't keep track of who's logged in (except via cookies on the user's machine), so I think it would require too many changes to implement, and I doubt TP would be up for it. =)

no. I don't care to know who's online. What would it change to my Asylum experience ? And if I want to contact an inmate and don't already have his/her email or IMid there's still the Send E-mail feature in his/her Patient File.

You know what, a Private Message feature would totally rock. So would a "Whos Online" list. All BB Systems have one. Im pretty sure this one does but it is UltimateBB so I am not too sure, it should have one. I hate UBB. The admins should be able to enable such an option.
I would again, love to have a PM/Active Members thing.

I don't think that feature is needed here. I also can't believe anyone would call the Gurus rubbish. To me it is invaluable. I do think there are so needed additions to the Grail though. For instance the auto-pagination is great, but I wish pages like quick changes had links to all the different pages in a format like <1> <2> <3> ... etc. That way I didn't have to click on a thread I'm keeping up on and then click on the page I want, I could just jump right to it.

Goody.
A list like the one I suggested could be useful to just get a vague idea of how many members/guests are online to see if, for example, you post a thread, how many people might reply how quickly. Or private messages. You could send private messages. I just think it might be useful, and anyway it was just a suggestion.
Sorry if I offended anyone with the GurusNetwork comment, but I joined not too long ago and just found that there really wasn't that much there to hold my interest. If you like it then cool, but I didn't. I can express my opinion, although I see that it's probably not always wise to do so.
So...um...
Sorry.

indeed, the grail doesn't know who you are until you post.
Private messages have been left out deliberatly - I don't want another place to check for messages. Use the email forms.
As for the 'who's online' feature, I always thought that to be a bloody invasion of privacy - and the asylum's never been a fast moving place. Post and come back in a few hours, don't expect replies right away.

About the only thing that I wish the Asylum had that I can't seem to live without are navigation links for previous/next post. I can live without them because I use those alot related to my browsing methods. I tend to start at the oldest new post and then read through the threads to catch up until I reach the most recent post. It just gets old having to go to the index to switch to another thread. I can live without it though, because like I said, some of it is just related to my browsing style.
Active members showing... I've seen it all sorts of ways, from a list at the bottom of the page to a separate who's online page, and unless I'm looking for a quick response to a PM, it's not that big a deal to not have one. Same for PMs, if you don't have them, you don't really miss them. It's rather nice to not have to worry about checking my PMs or worrying about remaining logged in or logging in each time.
And if TP built this from scratch, or even had just a bsic forum to build off of, this is an incredible forum and he did an awesome job. It's not easy to do. My guild's webmaster has heavily modified the forums that we use, and even then they still have a lot in common with the Infopop boards that they started out as.

Well then, that's reason enough for TP, etc to include it here
The only thing that I can think of that's missing is what Schitzo mentioned: quote: For instance the auto-pagination is great, but I wish pages like quick changes had links to all the different pages in a format like <1> <2> <3> ... etc.
However, that's a fairly minor thing that I think I can live without.
On the grand scale of things though, TP (and everyone else involved in the creation/maintenance of the Grail) have done an absolutely marvelous job. On somewhat of a sidenote, I think it's unfortunate that there are far more threads focused on "We need this", or "We need that", or "This needs changed" than there are on "Hey, thanks guys (and girls) for making this board/faq as great as it is, allowing us to share the vast amounts of information that gets passed through these halls."
Back on topic... I don't see the need for messaging each other through here or being able to see who's online...

One thing I always wondered was, WHY THE HECK DO FORUMS TELL YOU WHO'S ONLINE?
Forums are a form of asynchronous communication -- ie. not realtime. It matters little to none who is online at any given moment, since my message is not intended to be in realtime anyway.
Now, if there was an official OzoneAsylum IRC chat or something, then that would be a different story... I wouldn't mind a listing of who is in the chat at any given moment. If someone I wanted to talk to was in there, then hey, I'd pop on in.

For application development there is even an other way to go. It's called Mono and it's based on the .NET framework. Mono is the open source answer to .NET envirronments.

I second the No on who's online.
In part because I do not have any use for it, and in part since it's flawed in most cases.
I almost never shut down my computer at home, meaning I'm always online and usually with the Asylum open in one browser. Meaning that I'd appear to be online while I'm not.
And also just because I'm online does not necessarily mean that I have anything to add to a new thread or that I have a well formulated answer to give to a discussion I'm already in.

I don't really think its a necessary feature. I've been to a few message boards where they have them and its never really been an issue. If someone wanted to implement it into the code I wouldn't have any objections over it, but of all the things that could be worked on it seems to be the less useful.

I vote no. If it was a built in feature of the forum you are using and it isn't a problem then I'd say leave it in. As it isn't I'd say not to bother - it just doesn't seem worth the effort.

Private messaging in a forum is pointless as I know lots of people who'd never check it, or disable it. Those that do have it enabled would like also post their ICQ/MSN details anyway.
A "who's online" feature makes little sense in a forum context as well. The only thing it really adds is an interesting non-linear way to explore user profiles, whilst novel, serves no real need. Add to that the general privacy concerns most highly web orientated folk have and it becomes more of a negative.
The asylum is what it is because it doesn't implement a million and one features that it's users really don't want - as evident by this thread.
