I do pretty well with my own small business and I credit a good deal of my success to always standing by my customers. The checkbook has to balance but I find only looking at the bottom line to be penny wise and dollar foolish. You stand by your customer and you'll have a customer for life. I'm the same way as a consumer and Apple has really stood by me over the years.

Several years ago I posted here how I took the 17" years old, out of warranty Powerbook my parents bought me in college in for repairs and how it went back and forth a few times before they acknowledged they were unable to repair it, refunded me the original cost of repairs (about $100), and replaced my laptop. I would have been happy with a refurbished Powerbook but I ended up with a brand new MacBook Pro with every upgrade I made on the original Powerbook. That was about 2007 or 2008. Anyway, I started up my MacBook Pro about a month ago, the machine booted, but the screen remained blank. To make a boring story more tolerable the computer went back and forth a few times, and earlier this morning I received a phone call from the Apple Store acknowledging that they're unable to fix my MacBook Pro and I'll be getting a new one free of charge, complete with all the upgrades.

I'm not a fanboy or anything but with service like that, how do you not stay a customer for life and tell everyone you know? People talk about the cost of their products but I've definitely gotten my money out of them.

Word!
It is truly refreshing to hear such a positive account of "customer relations". My penny pinching p***** (alliteration declined) have lost my custom and respect with their corporate "out of warranty" off-hand dismissal of my technical computer woes.

Customer relations is great, but you could've bought a new non-Apple laptop for about $1000 in 2004 (with a much better processor, particularly as this was the end of the PPC days), another for $500-1000 in 2008, and another for $300-500 today... and you'd still have spent less money than you did on that original 17″ PowerBook.

We don't need your facts here reisio! :P

although you make a good point, I don't think the experience of the operating systems is comparible, they each have their advantages, and if you're used to and happy with one, such as OS X, then it's best to enjoy it.

You could be right reisio but I'm definitely happy with my purchase and Apple's customer service.

Oh yeah, Linux will rock once of these days.
