I'm taking a class at the university right now, mostly just for the hell of it...
"History of Animation and American Popular Culture"
I'm gettin' college credit to watch cartoons!
We're watching old ones like Betty Boop and other Max Fliecher ones plus a lot of Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, Warner Brothers ones.
Each week of class has a different theme:
History & Technology
Disney: Wholesome Family Entertainment or Evil Rat Bastards with Big Ears?
Warner Brothers: Mass Appeal on a Cheap Budget or Subversive Artistry?
Cultural Identity, Politics and Racial Representation
Violence and Otherwise Grotesque
--- Bambi Meets Godzilla (Marv Newland)
--- Ren & Stimpy (John Kricfalusi)
--- etc
Adult Animation
Counter Culture and Avant Garde

We have to write a few papers during the course, but mostly it's just sitting and watching and talking about animation. What more could you want out of a university class?

Emps, I have 3 DVD's of Beavis and Butthead. 43 joyous episodes .

I used to love South Park. It used to actually be funny. Now they're just taking current events and being stupid.

Ed, Edd, and Eddy is ok. On Adult Swim I tend to watch Trigun a lot now.

I love Futurama, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons....

And that's pretty much it for Cartoons...

Oh! And Daria .

Yu-gi-oh (yugio) means 6-25 in Korean... the date of the start of the Korean War, and the term used to refer to the Korean War by most Koreans.

OK, back to the show.

Hey, I liked Scrappy. ~ducks flying fish~ No, seriously, I did. I thought he was cool, but shucks, I was 8, give me a break.

Voltron was a good show. I always liked the yellow lion. And I spent many, many hours watching Robotech, though at the time I didn't realize that a lot of their fight scenes replayed the same animation.

Cartoons these days don't cut it for me, although I did go through a Pokemon stage for a bit. I guess my favorites will always be:
GI Joe
Transformers (the 1980's Transformers)
Gummi Bears
The Smurfs
Scooby-Doo
Danguard Ace
Voltron
Robotech
Dragonball Z (yes, Dragonball. What can I say? I'm a sucker for flashy lights and blowing up mountains with your hands.)
Beavis and Butthead (reminds me of college)
South Park
Pokemon
Starship Troopers (actually, 3D animation but we'll consider it a cartoon. A great, but short-lived, series on sci-fi, btw I heartily recommend the book, not the movie one but the origina by R. Heinlein, one of the masters of science fiction)

All right, Silence!!

I have to agree that the cartoons nowadays are crap. Whatever happened to cartoon express on USA? There were some cool shows on there. Space Ghost being one of the best. There were just tons of them.

I also liked a bunch of the... uh Saban cartoons. like Ronin Warriors. I've been looking for those for a long time. There was another one that had mobile suits sort of like in Gundam but it was more based on the pilot. Gunner and Blade or Blaze were two of the main characters. Anyone remeber that one. My brother and I couldn't think of the name.

<EDIT> - Google was my friend. Zero Gunner (go figure) That one was pretty cool. The original Gundam was good then it got stupid. - </EDIT>

I tend to like anime' so I watch Cowboy Bepod and Gundam Wing. Hate Dragon Ball Z. Stupidest cartoon ever.

I agree with everyone's assessment that Scooby Doo went downhill after they intoduced Scrappy Doo. Cannot believe that they brought that cartoon back as the "New Adventures." Thousands of talented writers, voice actors, and artists out there and Hollywood just keeps retreading the old ideas... *oops! other topic*

I know creating cartoons purely to sell a product isn't new (I always felt He man and pos. Thundercats were a little too tightly merchandised) but Yu-gi-oh, Bayblades and Pokemon (the last being what really triggered the current wave) are really extracting the urine - Pokemon had virtually no plot at all, Bayblades is really only one step up the ladder and Yu-gi-oh is on too early in the morning for me and I've only caught episodes when I've not bothered going to sleep but it doesn't seem much better.

I do enjoy Dragonball and Justice League though - the former is really quite outrageous and addictive

Starship troopers is good - although I did spend far too long thinking 'ooooooh thats some nice work there'.

Anyway give me Road runner and Fred Quimby-era Tom and Jerry and I'm happy.

And yes I like cartoons - I think they stop my brain from getting over heated.

I've always loved the original Transformers series, it'll always have a place as my #1 favourite show. But along with it, the 80's brought a few other worth-rememberers. Thundercats, GI-Joe, The Masters of the Universe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Of course, the late 80's brought us the simpsons too, which will always be remembered as one of the all time greats, although, the last 4 seasons or so have been really really bad. Which is okay, because now we have Family Guy (which was cancled 3 seasons ago, but still worth watching the replays) undoubtebly, every episode was, funnier than the simpsons series ever was, and Futurama, also now cancled, but still airing new episodes for at least the remainder of the season.

Cartoons I watched growing up:

Transformers - I loved the Dinobots, especially Grimlock! I also liked the fact that whoever did Optimus Prime's voice did it like John Wayne.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - A 30-minute commercial if there ever was one, but hey, it was fun...

GI Joe - Where I learned that battles involving hundreds of people could be resolved without a single injury, and that knowing was half the battle! They show it around midnight on Cartoon Network on weekdays!

Thundercats - Hated the stupid brother and sister and Snarf!

The Bionic Six - C'mon, someone else must've watched this! What about Doctor Scarab and Glove and Monkeywrench? What about Mother One, IQ, Sport One, Rock One?

Peter Pan and the Pirates - Not the Disney-fied version, but a much cooler interpretation. Capt. Hook, far from being the wet noodle from Disney, was a big, muscular man (who actually wore the period powdered wig) voiced by Tim Curry. Curry did a great job with Hook, and pretty much made that cartoon for me.

[Edit: Ah, G-Force! I can't believe I forgot that! Thanks, Dufty!]

College Days:

Gargoyles - Simply one of the best animated series, ever, even though it was made by Disney! A series in which characters got hurt and killed, that intermixed science and sorcery, and even worked in characters/plotlines from Shakespeare's MacBeth and Midsummer Night's Dream. It had story arcs, for crying out loud, at a time when no cartoons did.

Birdman, The Galaxy Trio, The Herculoids, Frankenstein Jr, The Impossibles, Mightor, Shazzan, Dino Boy, Moby Dick - Cartoon Network had an afternoon of old Hanna Barbara shows that I and my future wife would zone out to after class. Man, these things were terrible, but in such a great way!

Batman the Animated Series - Wow, talk about raising the bar for animated series! And with Mark Hamill as the Joker!

Dr. Katz - The first show done in Squigglevision! Stand-up comics come in for 'therapy', discussing bits from their acts as their 'problems'. Really good stuff. Also the predecessor to Home Movies...

Nowadays:

The Zeta Project - This show had a lot of potential, but I'm sure it's been ruined and cancelled by now.

Batman Beyond - Continues the great tradition started by BtAS. Really good stuff. Loved the episode with Superman and the Justice League. Heck, I love all of them!

Futurama - They cancelled it? Sonofa... Damn show was too smart for its own good. Heck, maybe Cartoon Network's Adult Swim will pick it up to make new episodes, like they did with Home Movies. Hey, speaking of Home Movies...

Home Movies - Besides Futurama, the other reason I don't get to bed until midnight these days. My favorite episodes have to be the ones with the rock opera based on Kafka's Metamorphosis, and where people keep putting marbles in their noses.

Jason: I tried eating through my nose once.
Melissa: Ewww.
Jason: I also tried eating through my eye.
Melissa: Ewww, Jason!
Brandon: Um, Jason. Why not just eat with your mouth.
Jason: I read somewhere that to be truly human is to be constantly exploring...

Keep in mind that they're eight years old.

SeaLab 2021 - Nuff said.

Sparks: I have a book for you.
(White) Debbie: What is the book called?
Sparks: "A Modest Proposal".
(White) Debbie: Who is the book by?
Sparks: Jonathon Swift.
(White) Debbie: What is the book about?
...
Sparks: ...eating babies...

The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab - I don't see them that often now, but the first few years they were out, I was all over them, particularly Dexter's Lab!

South Park - Natch.

The Simpsons - Though they've been heading downhill for the past couple of seasons, they're still better than 99% of what's out there...

Cartoons I loathe:

Transformers Armada - Just rip the heart out of my childhood, why don't you?

Pokemon, Dragonball, heck, just about any of the Japanime crap to cross the Pacific in the last few years. (Don't get me wrong, I loved Vampire Hunter D and Robotech, esp. the third series with the motorcycles, but I did want to push Minmae out an airlock.)

Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Apparently made by the same people who make Sealab 2021, but God!, it's inane... I can't stand it.

That's about it for now...

Evil in theory, not so much in practice...

Just to name a few...

Tennesse Tuxedo
Underdog <-- an all-time favorite!
Dudley Do-Right
Rocky and Bullwinkle

Transformers - got up at 6 am on a Sunday to watch the very first episode. Rocked my world. Been thinking about gettting the movie. Don't really care for recent incarnations. Transformers Armada really pisses me off. Star Scream is suppossed to be dead! I mean, he was dead in Beast Wars, so leave him dead! Not only that, but they did a nasty butcher job on their history.

He-Man - the original was okay. The re-hashed animations bothered me after awhile. The new one is definitely a step in the right direction for ressurrecting an old 'toon.

Smurfs - pretty campy, but watchable. Then they added too many characters and it went down hill.

Gummi Bears - great show.

Inspector Gadget - loved this one as well.

Star Blazers - this one literally had me on the edge of my seat when they finally reached Gamalon(?). My only complaint is the use of the Wave Motion Cannon at the end of every episode. That got tiresome, but I still enjoyed it. Some years ago I heard a rumour of a live-action movie with Sean Connory as the Captain.

Space Ghost: Ghost Planet - *love* this show. Best watched after a few brews. Never really cared for Coast to Coast.

Mighty Orbots - only got to see one episode,a and it was one of the greatest 'toons I have ever seen.

Dirty Pair / Lovely Angels - I miss them. Saw some comedy dubbed version while in college and laughed my ass off.

Ranma 1/2 - saw most of the first season and loved it. We didn't have sub-titles or dubbed, but we did have the scripts. So, we took turns reading the episodes. The other day I saw boxed sets of entire seasons at the record store for $130 each and I was *very* tempted.

Basterds! - if you are into D&D, you've got to see this! Just plain kicks ass. Seen the sub-titled and I've heard that the dubbed version sucks. Deep Doomsday!

Batman the Animated - great show. One thing that really seperates this 'toon is the character development, especially with the villians. In one of them, the Penguin says to Batman, "You of all people have the gull to ask me that question! I was willing to give you any life you wanted - just to keep you out of mine!" In some episodes, you can't help but feel sympathy for the bad guys. Mark Hamil was great as the Joker. The movie rocked as well. So did the cross-over "movie" with Superman.

That's about half of my response.
I've got plenty more, but I don't know if I'll find the time.
