I don't think much.

Oh, and remember, since you've asked everyone's opinions, you're sure to get some responses you won't like.

Assuming the person in the photograph is you...
I for one, was planning on telling you that you seem quite the attentionwhore. You may think of yourself as standing out, but truth is, you're hardly the first who's tried this kind of style (both in clothing as in bad gothic statements) and you're not likely to be the last. I get somewhat bored by people telling others they're different, while they all try so desperately to stand out that they all look the same to me.

The image hasn't got much artistical merit. You got the 'alone' part down. The rest is an oversized, mostly white image with some canned effects and a standard, gothic, angsty line. Bravo.

You might retort to that that I'm a closedminded moron. If that's your opinion, ok. But this one is mine.

Okay. To compensate; some things I think that could be improved you your image;

The photo itself could use a little more contrast. an easy way to fix this would be the levels dialog, click [image>adjust>levels] or press CTRL-L. move the black triangle to the right and the white triangle to the left to make your photograph a bit clearer. to do things simply, click on the black eyedropper, and click on a black part in your image. this will then turn into 100% black. Same goes for white. For even better results, read the Curves tutorial by steve, at the Guru's network.

Also, if this image is for web use, it could do with a litle resizing. No vital details will be lost, and if you still want the picture of yourself to be big, you'll need to do something with the white space around the picture.

And for some personal things; try to be yourself instead of some artificial image.

Oh, I'm not having a bad day... I'm just pulling a Milker here.

binary; I'm the same mahjqa as I've always been. Most of the time, if not always, my comments are helpful, describing minutely what's wrong and how to fix it. The second post would be a perfect example of that. Sometimes I just feel the need to state my personal opinion. What I referred to as 'pulling a Milker' is a post written in the style of the (in)famous Mikey Milker, a person who didn't (and doesn't) give a fuck about what anyone thought of him, and just posted his blunt opinion. It just happens to me that most of the time I keep my opinions to myself, that's why you don't see me often on the philosophy forums.

So, that's why the posts seemed to be written by different persons.

A funny thing about the Goth culture (at least here in Norway) is that everyone is supposed to be special and unqiue, but they have to be special and unique just like all the other Goths. If you are special in a different way, yet still within the limits of what most non-Goths would call Goth, you're not 'a real Goth'

A Sandwich sounds nice. Got anyone left?

Because DTE hasn't asked a question that makes answering with any intelligence feasible. Not to mention that they/she is using the namesake of the one and only 'Doc Ozone' within his own creation, to boot. Beyond that, if there was some more direction as to the information that DTE was looking for things might not seem so harsh because we would be able to offer some actual review. As far as it's first blush goes... I like. For a web page application it is an awfully HUGE graphic.

And insulting an entire community of people isn't likely to improve your station in life. At the best it will only make us think less of you.

Oh, gee, I guess you told us

You certainly won't get anywhere with this childish bullshit. If you wanted something specifc, then you need to state that when you post image in the first place.

It is natural to assume, in such an image, the subject is yourself. With such a personal image, it would also be wise to point out when you post the image, that it is not you.

When you make vague posts with vague subject matter, guess what - you;re going to get vague responses! And guess what else - just because you post a topic, doesn't mean people are going to stick to it. That's just something you need to accept and deal with.

And finally, you got some reveiws on the image - now go and do something with the informative advice that you've received

=)

Not sure why I'm bothering to say this, but... the Ozone Asylum is a technical forum for graphic designers and web authors. It's easy to say that art has no rules, but that doesn't mean that everything is art. Our most respected members (and most of the people who have bashed you are among our most respected members) have that respect for a reason: they understand what makes good art good, and bad art bad.

If you choose to ignore them, you're sending the following message: "I don't care if my work is good or not."

And if you a) don't believe my words, or b) don't care about them, then honestly: leave and never return. If we're assholes, it's because we believe that tough love is better than mushy indifference. (Look at any DeviantArt comments section ever for an example of the latter. If you want "good job, like the colors," then you're at the wrong forum.)

And if we talk about sandwiches, it's because you haven't provided a compelling reason for the thread... one of my personal favorites is hard cheddar, chicken salad, and alfalfa sprouts on rye.

In other words "what fo you think" translates directly into "tell me it's good or stay out of the discussion" ...

Frankly, like so many others here, I spent years learning to use photoshop, and still don't have the nerve to offer any of my creations as "what do you think" items BECAUSE I'M NOT GOOD ENOUGH OF AN ARTIST ... nor am I egocentric enough to waste peoples time, and insult their intelligence by expecting them to compliment my work ...

My opinion of the image not withstanding, I disagree with this statement by Perfect Thunder...

"Our most respected members (and most of the people who have bashed you are among our most respected members) have that respect for a reason: they understand what makes good art good, and bad art bad."

You cannot define good art vs. bad art. Good and bad are opinions, not markers. The most respected people here are not respected because they can set a standard definition for what must be liked and what must be disliked., they are respected for their work and their help, not their opinions.

That said, T.E.O. - you asked for opinions and got them. You may disagree with them, but that's no reason to begin trash talking, just because you didn't get the applause you felt you deserved. If you think it's fine the way it is, by all means, ignore our criticisms. You never know though, somebody might make a comment that might influence you to look at it a different way and see something that could improve it. Getting angry because we don't agree with your opinion, well, that just gets us defensive, and makes it less likely people will be willing to critique your work in the future. Yes, some people here lack tact, and will critique your work without providing any beneficial suggestions for how to improve it. You just gotta ignore them, and take the bad with the good.

As for your image - I have no problem with someone using stock photos. We can't all have our own cameras and such. The bevel though, is rather cheesey, and doesn't add much to the image. The text doesn't really create any emotional ties to the girl for me, because she does not look alone or even sad. There's far too much white space for such a large image, and I don't understand why you clipped off the bottom left of the photo. So, there's my criticism. Suggestions: maybe if you had a very very very light, almost watermark light image of just the girl superimposed on the left... zoomed in some, maybe on her eyes or face. Also, do something with the text. Black on white... it doesn't express much to me. Now, white on black, or a different color on black, that would give me more of a feeling of a void, emptiness. I can't think of much else right now. It definitely needs work, in my opinion, but you go ahead and ignore that if you disagree. Just don't get angry.

Waanh...waanh...oh yeah and WAANH. You done whining now DTE. You want me to get you a bottle? Maybe change your diaper? Stop acting like a big baby. You asked for it and you got it. Sorry people didn't box it up with a little pink ribbon.

Here, I'll critique the emotion of that photo:

1) No emotion in her face. Just be cause she's not smiling doesn't mean she's depressed. she actually looks like she's doing that: "Just take the damn picture" non-smile

2) The lighting is dull, no sense of any kind of drama or emotional hook. Judging by the way the wall behind her is blown out I'd guess this was shot in the shade on an overcast day.

3) It has no point of reference. If she is depressed, then about what? Her make-up?

4) There is no moment. Its basically a posed shot.

Sorry to break it to you DTE, but the photo you are channeling all this emotion into is probably somebodies snapshot of their little goth girlfriend(who was trying to look all serious/vogue) with a cheap point-and-shoot or disposable camera(the softness shi spoke about earlier-cheap lens).

BTW What is up with using Docs name? Nothing says "I am not creative" then using someone elses handle.

1. It's too wide. If this is something that is to be displayed on the computer screne, it's too big. Even on my 1280 x 1024 res, I have to scroll
to see the entire pic. I don't like that.

2. The text being on one side and the picture on the other doesn't really work. Don't know what else to say there. The text itself, doesn't really
go with the "idea" or "emotion" does it? Nope.

3. The picture itself, it's not yours so I won't bother too much. It's really washed out though. May want to spend sometime working on it by itself if you plan on using it.

4. For this kind of subject matter, the ferns in the background really suck. It clashes with the subject.

5. The beveling and embossing of the pic makes it look REAL cheap. It looks like a pillow. Drop shadows are the same thing. Too cheap.

6. Why is the corner sepearted from the rest of the pic? It really makes no sense to me. Is that what is "standing out and alone" ? Not supposed to be is it? Isn't it supposed to be her emtions?

Now, I didn't have one good thing there to say. Bummer. Wish that I did. Now, if your attitude regarding critiques is going to continue this way, then I suggest that you either deal with it or find one of those "hoopy froody" websites where people will think your cool. You asked what we thought and people told you. Don't ask if you want to hear the truth, which is what you are going to hear. There are some great talent here in the halls of the Asylum but if you just go about it half assed then you are really missing out.

When I first came here I posted my first website and got FLAMMED! But, I took a step back and looked at what I had done and yes, they were right. It sucked. Sucked real bad. But I have taken their advice here and their help and used it. I think since then, my skills have improved greatly. And I have them and myself and no one else to thank for that.

'Dr T E Ozone' (and everyone else who posted in this thread) i like to invite you for a little challenge

Go over to the Photoshop forum and post the original pic there.
Then try to make it look alone and bear in mind the comments people gave in here.
I too (not the biggest artist 'round here) will make a picture and try making her look alone.
Hopefully other people will join to. Then you watch take a good look at the pic you like most. And watch the things other people did. And to the other inmates i like to say: just show him what you meant, a picture is worth more than a thousand words.

Why do you all people - now including me - waste time with such a bad tempered guy like this fake Ozone stupid something? This guy sucks. Take a look only at the few posts he or she has posted here. They mean nothing! This thread should be deleted to avoid more people to waste their time.

Holy shit, that looks like the girl I lost my virginity too.

I think she'd look a lot better after a bottle of vodka... or was it two bottles...

edit: Nothing beats Turkey, Hommus, Dutch smoked cheese and cracked black pepper on soy and lyn seed bread.

You know, I had my very first hummus at a party last night.

And met a girl for whom I wouldn't mind regaining my virginity just so I could lose it again.

""What do you all think?", step back and shut up"

umm, yea ....

Instead of shutting up I'll give you a wee review despite of the ol' logic flaw.
Its a photo of ugly, bevel&emboss and a line of text. Is it like some kind of "modern art" ? I dont get it eitherway.
"Standing Out / And Alone" .. why not just write "Loser".

One thing I do like about it is it shows the foolishness of trying to stand out too much.

It just occurred to me that whenever someone reacts poorly to criticism, it usually turns into a "you asked for it, you got it" dogpile. Perhaps we should start an FAQ about "why is everyone so mean to me?" and refer people to that?

One more thing: did you actually ask the permission of this girl to use the photograph? Maybe she doesn't want to be photoshopped at all.
