I think New Zealand's government gave some millions dollars to the Academy to win all those awards.

JK, LOTR are the greatest movies since ages. They deserved.

I am very much with krets and InI...they do not deserve all those oscars...I even stoped watching the damn show because it was clear, whenever LOTR is present, it's going to win...just like InI, I found that movie boring..high budged fairy tale...big deal...ohh look at those FX...yeah yeah... I could agree they had good animation team...but I was damned whan I heard that it won "landscape design" or something like that...Last Samurai had most spectacular landscape shots..ohh well let me get to the point, LOTR sucks...period...

overall I hate oscars now... they nominate whats more popular rather that whats better....its like MTV...ahh

As far as I'm concerned, it's been a long time in the waiting for fantasy films to get any kind of recognition at the Oscars. I'm more of a "based on a true story" type film-lover myself, but I thought these movies were well worth the ticket price. I haven't seen any other movies this year that even came close to the satisfaction I had leaving the theater with LOTR.

Peter Jackson deserves everything coming to him on this one. He's earned the sh@t out of it.

urm....no, not really. for peter jackson to take on the monumental task of putting to film, books with such a huge following and for the vast majority of those people being extreamly happy about what a good job he did.....I believe they were all well deserved.

Well, I would have to think not, seeing as you didn't see the movie.....

The awards are done yearly....so the only movie in question is the third one.
I beleive wholeheartedly that it deserved everything it won.

Of course you have to remember that the budget for the movie covered all THREE of them. . .

Liv Tyler is very beautiful, but she needs a diet.
That's why she wasn't nominated for best supporting actress.
She's fat !!

And The King? That Viggo Mortesen guy (right spelling?) was not a good actor. In some parts of the movie he sucks. I would have nominated for best male actor the chief Uruk-ai. That guy rocks. What a performance!

And, as said before, 300 million bucks was for ALL three movies, and that's not that much, considering that they have produced 9+ hours of very good entertainment. I've heard that the 5th installment of the Harry Potter series will alone use 300 million bucks! That's a real waste of money. Waste 300 million bucks in a teen, stupid, empty movie??

LOTR, imo, is silly, specially those battles where each one of the main characters are able to kill one hundred uruk-ais without even getting a stitch, but hey, that's a fantasy movie. The heroes are not meant to die. Despite being silly, all three movies are great, deserved all the oscars they won (I mean "they" because it seems obvious to me that ROTK won those many oscars because it's part of a series of three movies, where the other two where also great movies - IOW, ROTK won in behalf of the series).

BTW, Oscar for me is not about the best movies, but about the movies that gave back more money to the studios. It's all about money. Money, money, money, money and money. Money rules.

Oh, of course, sex is also important in this industry...

Well, more important than this being a "fantasy movie", the stories were written essentially for the purpose of creating a mythology for Britain that Tolkien felt was far too lacking. Look at any major mythology - they all focus on the most extraordinary people available, and put them in such situations. It wouldn't work properly any other way.

And I've got go with Amerasu here - if Liv Tyler is what you call fat....I'd hate to hear what you call people who actually are.

Neither of them looked at all fat to me. I dunno... if you're calling these women fat, then there's little hope for the average woman. I think Liv Tyler looks great. I guess it's a personal opinion, Viol

The question of their fatness aside, what does being overweight have to do with getting nominated anyway? Kathy Bates was nominated and she won. I'd consider her fairly overweight. Judi Dench has been nominated and she looks a bit pudgy. Whoopi Goldberg certainly isn't skinny and she won an Oscar. So I guess I just can't see how weight had anything to do with Liv Tyler not getting a nomination. It probably had more to do with the fact that she said maybe 2 lines in the entire ROTK movie.

Fat has nothing to do with winning an Oscar, of course. I'm just being a little naughty.

About Liv Tyler, she's a gorgeous, beautiful and lovely (so she looks) woman. I first knew her in that movie, filmed in Italy, Stealing Beauty. She is just unforgettable there.

If you compare her in that movie with how she looks today, she is not fat at all, but she has a more mature body, and I would say that this means she is fatter now. Which doesn't mean she's fat, but fatter, or less thin.

This has to do with aging. It's a natural process, expected to happen to almost all women. She still looks like a Disney princess.

[edit] - Oh, and about Renée, I indeed think she's a little overweithed now, but there is an excuse: she had to gain weight for the role she took in the movie.

HA HA HA !!

This Google thing totally rocks !!!!!!!!!!!!

I typed "Liv Tyler is fat" and look at this: http://imdb.com/PeopleNews/2003/20031114#7

"Buxom screen star Liv Tyler is risking her Hollywood career - by refusing to lose weight. The 26-year-old has been told by movie bosses she risks missing out on top film roles unless she reduces the size of her shapely figure. But Liv - who trimmed to a svelte 57 kilograms for her part as heroine Arwen in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, before piling 13 kilograms back on after shooting wrapped - insists she is happy with her weight and doesn't want to diet. She says, "I've been told that if I lose weight I'd have more work, but I refuse to submit myself to Hollywood standards. To the rest of the world I am slim and I like the way I am"

HA!

Ain't it funny?
She is smarter than Hollywood wanted her to be.
