Could you post your attempts at creating the fog? That way we can see what you're doing wrong, what you're doing right, or what you're not doing at all.

Z-Depth!
I'm off to look for links.

edit:
Hmm... couldn't find any links that I'm happy with.
If you do a z-depth render, I'm sure you'll be able to figure out the rest.

OT:
I'm still working on getting my next composition challenge together. This set of renders will include a z-depth render.

Two things might help of you go back in your 3d package:

1. Field of depth, to fade the stuff in the distance
2. volumetric light, to make foggy

warjournal, you're a lifesaver

zdepth render combined with some contrast and low opacity and it looks much better now
thanx! i'll post some update soon so you can see the result. i'm also experimenting with some fog effects directly in 3ds max and maybe i'll make it work even better...

GH33DA, depth of field does work but not for what i'm trying to do. it makes objects blurry alright but not like fog looks like. it's more like a photo taken with the focus on the foreground objects... you know what i mean?

cheers!

I am not seeing much difference, but in any case it's pretty cool.

arlechinu: Welcome. You have some great modelling and texturing skills.

Ramasax: I've had some difficulties to notice the differences ( the 2 images being far from each other ) but the further parts are in a fog. Look at the window on the main wall : the shutter is sharp and dark in both, but in the latest the background nearby is way lighter than in the first image.

I can see difference mainly in the shingles and bricks. More subdued or something. Makes good for a gray, rainy day.

Although, I do think that the fog is largely lost because of the composition. Too much foreground and not enough background for more fog and fading into the distance type stuff. Not saying that it's bad - just an observation on conduciveness.

thanx people for your kind comments and compliments on my work

and the differences are indeed subtle, yet they do add to the feeling of the scene

anyways, thanx a lot for your help, i will most certanly get back here in case i need some more help on stuff like this

cheers!

Serial Killer over at CGTalk has written an interesting tutorial on using a z-depth render for doing post DOF in PS CS. Not exactly the same as what we've been talking about, but close enough.

Part II

Part I is basically the same thing, but hobbled together in a not so good way. So he wrote another one for the same material but in a different manner. IMHO, the second one is way better than the first one.

Lens Blur definitely looks like a good tool. Man, talk about saving time. I would hate to render a bunch a renders with DOF in my 3d prog to get it just right.
Compositing is good.
