Hello,
i have a prob in designing s.t. with photoshop. I tried to make a ring of lightning... if u understand this. Is there another way instead of generating and clone it around a normal ring ? Perhaps you guys can show me how to make that....

Two thoughts, both of which would be somewhat destructive to the lightning.
1) Polar Coordinates. That will twist it up into a circle fast, but might lose the sense of lightning in the distortion. Where the lightning is placed in the image before Polar Coords is run is critical to the outcome. You'll need to do a good bit of experimenting. Read this tutorial: http://www.gurusnetwork.com/tutorials/photoshop/polar_coords.html
2) Make several copies of the lightning (pref. agains a black background), run the shear filter, transform>rotate each layer so they gradually make up the circle, set layer blend mode to screen so hard light or something similar. If the Shear filter doesn't get it curved enough, maybe place the lightning bolts on one edge and run the spherize? The piece them together again?
How did you create the lightning? Rend did an interesting one: http://www.gurusnetwork.com/tutorials/photoshop/lightning.html
Good luck! Show us how it turns out.

follow the gursnetwork tutorial on lightning but use a cloud filter instead of a gradient
check out something I did for a friend: http://www.geocities.com/petskull/krid2.jpg
look at the shock... you can make it more circular by playing with it a little bit...
...or maybe a circlar gradient?

Don't know how you make yours, but If you make your base shapes with the pen tool, - a circlish shape, some forks here n there - then apply normal lightning type thingies, should be a cake walk.
Do then adapt the gurus lightning tut that Steve mentions above. =)

Blast you DG - when *I* only have a minute to spare, all I can manage is words. How do you get words *and* pictures inthe same minute?

How 'bout
Or...
In one I made a vertical white->black gradient in a square file, ran polar coordinates and then followed Rend's tutorial.
In the other I started with a circular gradient and then the tutorial. I guess hand-work would be needed to get more branching, but it makes for a neat core effect! Good question. I enjoyed messing with it.

Good afternoon all.....I tried this one using the radial blur/difference clouds/tweeked with levels/then colored with hue. Not a real circle but lightning is not really round??? Have a good one & happy Photoshopping.....

Also, i used the, "make it look purdy" button... sorry guys, i made it really fast...

I would show u but i have two new probs <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">
1. How can i put a pic in here ?
2. <- This would be the harder one ... I wanted to know how to make this ring, because i want to make a ring of blank steel and overlay these with the ring of lightnings. It should be with all the effects of lights in the metall where the lightning appears above it. (Hope u guys understand me ´cause i am german and my english is .. ah .. not perfect) I have tried to find a pic in the web, which looks similar but i havent found one yet.

I think Kruzr has the right idea. You need to read the lightning tutorial that says "run a black/white gradient, then run difference clouds (a few times until you get a nice circle), then mess with levels to isolate the lightning." The aforementioned gradient should be radial, from center.
Here is my transparent .gif of the effect, with colorization and some color dodge effects.

1) Two ways, both require that the image is posted on a web server. You can just type in the URL and we can go look at it (helpful if it's big). To get it to show up on the forum page, type .
2) You want the sense of the ring of lightning ocurring above the metal? Which would imply a pretty bright light on the metal itself? I'd start with the metal as the background layer. Generate the lightning effect on a layer above the metal, using one os the suggestions above. Set this layer to something like "screen" or "color dodge", which will in effect drop out the dark part of the lightning layer and leave the lightning and its "halo" and see where that gets you.

Ahh! I'm too late! Some of you maniacs stole my answer! I guess that's what I get for slacking at the Asylum.
Yeah, I use a circular gradiant, difference clouds, invert, curves combo. Play as necessary in between the steps for some cool variations. This is actually one variation on Rend's tut I had been playing with while thinking about one of my tuts for GN.
Another variation I had been playing with is using it on photopgraphs. Copy the layer, desaturate, tweak, gauss around 5-8, difference clouds, invert, lightning it, set mode to screen. It's not really that useful as near as I can tell, but it can look sweet on a photo with a decent amount of contrast.
Sorry. Didn't mean to get too far off topic. I'll go back to my corner now.
