Wow, is this it, have we hit a crisis, has this thing I built back in May so that I could have something to do, somewhere to go when I came home in the evenings, has it all gone sour?
THERE IS NO GOVERNEMENT HERE.
If there is any governing power here, at all, it is me. Welcome to my "Benevolent Anarchy", with me as the happy-go-lucky, inattentive monarch. I let things go there own way mostly, so it gets to be an aanarchy situation. I like anarchy, it's more fun than rules and regulations.
HOW DO YOU BECOME A MAD SCIENTIST?
That one's easy. I am the only mad scientist here, because I was the only moderator. (The title used to be "Freelance Terrorist") Then I became friends with the people here, and made those people I liked, who added something to the group Mad Scientists too, just like me. Hell, then they started helping me out, archiving things and moderating threeads, that was cool. My friends are helping me out, how lucky I am!
I DON'T FEEL SO LUCKY ANYMORE.
Gad, I'm feeling pretty disgusted with everything right now. My life is so damn stressful right now, I'm starting a new company, my home life is invaded by in-laws, sleeping on my sofa, most of my really close friends are thousands of miles away, I have nowhere else to go and be with my friends, virtual or otherwise. YOU are my friends, this is my community, I look at this wonderful, wacky place, and say to myself "this is good, I did this!" Now I don't feel so good. I just closed a bunch of forums, some for good reason, some simply because I'm pissed off with life in general. I may re-open some of them, I may not. I may post here over the course of this weekend, I may not do that either.
THERE ARE NO MORE MAD SCIENTISTS.
So sorry if you just got the cool title, and then I took it away. You're my firends, I hope you know that. My respect for all of you who deserve respect is still there, still just as strong. Silly titles cuased too many problems, too much power either makes people crazy or other people jealous? There are no more titles, other than what you get for having posted a lot or for moderating a forum. Sorry about that. There is as of this moment only one administrator, and the new title for that post is "Class Clown". That's me.

I don't mind not being a MS... I don't even know what all this about actually. I must have missed all the posts where people complained about not being one. I wasn't aware there were 20... that does seem rather high for what, 10 forums? I guess if it were 2 to a forum or something, that'd make sense. 1 can't cover the forums as much of the time as 2 can. But I know the sig forum had 4, which is a little high.
I do think DG did an excellent job closing those Serial # threads. I think if any MS should stay, he should.
I sure do miss the sig forum though. That's where I went mostly.
ps - I wouldn't be working with Photoshop the way I am today if I hadn't looked up photoshop tutorials and come upon Doc Ozone several years ago. Thanks, Doc.

i am a firm believer that site critiquing is very important for both the critiquer and the critique-e (heh, if thats a word). thats how i learned, even if it was on another forum, and even if i never posted a word (i later got a username).

hmm.. I'm sure some people blame me for this, and rightly so. For the part of the initiator, it was 102% my fault. And I respect that. If I am asked never to post here again, I will, of course, respect that.
BUT, I wonder... How can a pot boil over if it's not already been under heat for a while? Similarly, the "heat" has been building here.
So we blew off some steam?
I have no fear of the future now. I think we've all gotten it out of our systems. I think we can act as mature adults now. I guess we'll see.

I sat back and watched the "Coming Of The Crows" postings unfold and felt what Doc feels. Sadness. I'm not one for fussing or confusion <fill in whatever you may want to call it here>. So, I felt it best to stay out of it.
I found this place by pure luck through link surfing and knew it was special within minutes. I have checked everyones pages, tutorials and ideas in a quest to "Be all I can be". There are some awesome graphics people here and some that just think they are or wanna be. I am a wanna be.
Bottom line...this is Docs joint. I choose to respect it and those here. I choose to not let others problems become mine. I have a 3D life and at the end of the day I can click that little *X* up in the right corner on my screen and sleep all cozy and stuff.
I hope we can all get back to what it is this place was meant to be...a fun, growing and sharing graphics place.
On that note, thanks for all the help and ideas you have shared.

I have to say that I didn't think things would get this "hot" or that people would become so excited over being or having multiple admins. Maybe I was a bad admin myself for thinking that way. I usually believe that people will express there feelings sooner or later and that things will get resolved. I still do believe this way, I don't think this issue is resolved at all. Doc has taken this much more personally than I thought he would. (Maybe because of his current circumstances.) He usually has a much more clear head about issues than I do, and has a good way of putting issues back on track. I don't agree with Doc that closing down multiple forum sections was the best solution. But this is Doc's home and we are the guests here. I frequently get ICQ and email messages from others in the forum (Members and lurkers alike) who ask opinions and views on happenings here, I often wonder why they seek me out for these questions, but I give them the best answers I can. I'm proud to be a member here, and I for one never thought this forum was in danger in any way. The Asylum is growing and like anything it experiences growing pains from time to time. And changes will happen to accept the growth. Not everyone will like the changes, and we may lose some members to those changes. But change will happen, this is a dynamic and chaotic system. We cannot stop these changes, the best we (as a group) can do is manage those changes to be as painless and worthwhile as possible.
I don't know if Doc counts me as a friend, I've never asked him so I cannot speak for him. I do count Doc as a friend of mine that I've never met or seen, as I do many others here. I hope to meet some of them someday. I lurk on over a dozen design boards (some for several years) and I've never joined those boards. It didn't feel like a community I wanted to be a part of. When I saw the Ozone Asylum I joined right up and joined right in. I knew, in my soul, that this was a place I could call home. I don't regret that choice at all, and I'll continue to come here and help when I can, laugh when I can, and do anything else I can do.

What the hell has happened to the forum? The whole point of the extra MS' was to help Doc. Now he is back on his own.
I personally volunteered to be an MS only for the "janitorial duties." Doc's tuts and his scripts have helped me immensely and I was just trying to do something for him in return. I have never proclaimed myself as anything but a beginner who is enthusiastic about learning Photoshop.
I think we all need to take the corn cobs out of our asses and get back to having fun and helping each other with graphics.
I mean no disrespect to anyone and apparentl twItch took offense to my comments and that was never my intent.
All I am saying is that there are more important things in life than worrying about who has the title of mad scientist or who doesn't. Does it really matter that much in the grand scheme of things?
Now, I am going to go back to having fun and enjoying everyone's stuff. Anyone care to join me?

Like usual I agree with what F1 has to say about closing the forums, although they were yours to close. If it influences your decision to keep them open or not, I think now that we know exactly where we stand nothing but good can come out of them. Its amazing how in an online community people's personalities can change from one thread to another. People who have had arguments in one thread compliment the others work in another thread. With that said Im sure no grudges are being held and we can go back to helping each other learn new and different things. Whichever way you decide to take us go for it...

Krets, I'm glad you interjected the comic relief. I, for the first time in my life, couldn't bring myself to do it.
I haven't been hanging around here as much as I would like to (my head is still spinning from the Texas move) so I'm not sure I understand what's going on here. Therefore, forgive me if my post is uninformed and unhelpful.
However, I just want to let you know, Doc, that I -- and I'm sure many other people -- are completely disinterested by the politics that seem to be stirring things up and I still enjoy the forum immensely. I come here to talk about Photoshop and design and a lot of other stuff that isn't relevant to, well, much at all (big hair on TV, for instance).
There are a hell of a lot of great people here and this is the one forum I've found that isn't intolerably elitist, condescending and biting. Please don't get too stressed out over anything, Doc. You've created a great thing here and I'd hate to see it go sour over titles, or whatever the issue really is.
Maybe I should pay more attention to the inner workings of the Asylum, but I really do just come here for fun. It's where I go when I want to forget the stress from everything else. I hope we can all remember that this is really a place to share and joke and just lighten up. (That's not to trivialize your dismay, Doc, but to encourage everyone else to relieve you of it.)

Doc, I don?t think this should be a big deal. If you need help you can promote who ever you think. Ya know a bit about us and all that stuffs. You do need some help though, that is quite apparent.
I felt honored to be a MadS. but that would not change how much I post, who I am, or make me feel any greater. I would in no way use it to disturb anyone, but if me being a MS disturbed a bunch of people because I have only been here for 2 months, then that would not be cool. I visit the Sig forum every time I get online and then jump to Photoshop if I have time. I have seem some posts in the past that I would have liked to close, but people like DG do a really good job of ?toasting? most of them.
I am cool with what you think is best, except for the class clown. It just doesn?t fit in an asylum. How about ?symposium jesters?? I think sombody mixed up on the meds this week?

Finally...
I knew this would happen, that's why I spent all last night archeiving and you might notice that the ozone and DHTML forums each have about a page and a half less than they used to..
I'm glad Doc has done this, it was --sadly-- terribly necessary...
Too many people with their hands in the pot and too many feeling they didn't get enough.. revolutions have started this way, dictatorships too...
I was actually considering dropping all of this, saying my goodbyes and bidding good riddance... but a good friend (you know who you are) counseled me otherwise.. I see now that running would be the easy thing.. so, easy in fact, that I haven't really seen as many people talking about normal subjects as was the norm...
We have killed all of them.
George Clemenceau said once: "War is a series of disasters that result in a winner." Look around you. Do you see any winners here? All I see is a great man streched to his breaking point, a couple of great supporters who stuck with him, and a multidude of mcdevelopers whom let this great haven down.
We don't deserve this.
We --each and every one of us-- have betrayed all that this Asylum has been and ever will be. We have allowed our big heads and even bigger egos dictate our actions. Plato said: "Passion makes people as if they were standing on their heads, they see everything wrong." Oh, so dreadfully wrong. We neglected to take into account a number of factors:
1)As the 'highest ranking' inmates, is was our duty to set the example, and we have. Only it was the bad one.
2)Our petty pickering slowed down -if not eliminated- the flow of information that this place is famous for. After all, why did WE stick around in the first place?
3)Dark Garden raised a great point. "Where was the fun?" We were all quick to chime in that we were having a blast. But if that were the case, then why wasn't this allowed to die? Hypocrites. Every last one of us.
4)--The most important one-- This forum was never ours to lay doctrine upon, much less to ruin. We ruined the work of a great man and the entire manner of thinking of every newbie that came in here and decided that such spite was not worth it. I again refer to the thread of the mcdeveloper. 'Adults', we claim? Hardly.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we must learn something from this. This must never be allowed to happen again. We must never even get close. For this time we got off lucky. Far luckier than we deserve, frankly. For next time --God forbid there BE a next time-- I propose we fix the problem at it's root. Proceed with the course of action that will allow that Doc's work stand on it's own and we can but gawk at it.
The dismantelation of Avalon.

Wes is right on. I am tempted to tell everyone to lighten up with me and forget all the bad blood so we can get back to the business of discussing our passion: graphic design. HOWEVER, I realize that is too easy. Whenever you get very deep into a social situation (even an on-line one), dramas start to emerge.
On-line forums are something that I generally hold in disdain. Mainly because almost every one I have ever seen is filled with unruly children with so much time on their hands that they waste it typing in a steady stream of meaningless messages.
This forum is DIFFERENT. Here is a forum where you can ask a tough question and get a meaningful answer. Here is also a forum with enough collective brainpower to develop new graphics techniques just by bouncing ideas off each other. I have learned more here in the past 6 months than I have from all the tutorials I've absorbed over the years.
Because of this greatness, all these 'social issues' are merely a distraction. Doc's solution has leveled the playing field, and we are all free to move on.
No Doc, it hasn't all gone sour. This place will continue to attract the top talent that makes it what it is. Other forums can't and won't compete.
I take this place very seriously. But for professional and artistic purposes. Not social purposes. If you are using this as your social hangout, then you have to be prepared to deal with the 500 unique (and generally somewhat eccentric) personalities and what they bring to the table. 'nuff said.
Long live the asylum.

I've been a member here for maybe a month or two now, and I plan to stay here until the end. There are quite a few forums i've joined in my day, and this is basically the only one I visit regularly(multiple times daily) even the guru's network forum isn't as cool as this one.
I usually read every post to expand my field of knowledge, and to help people out if possible. One of the reasons I stay here is because I feel welcome. Another is because most of the people here have personalities like mine- usually, everyone is just joking around and having a good time. for the unfortunate times like when life gets to be too stressful, everyone turns serious(except for krets and comforts you.
I just want to say thanks for creating and keeping this forum. I don't have many friends, but when I come here, I feel like everyone is everyone elses friend. Thanks Doc and try to hang in there.
Besides, if the Asylum closes, where do we get our meds?

Wow. I missed this until just now also.
well.....what to say now...? sorry things had to get to that point Doc. I have been a memeber of this forum since it first began at it's original location, and have always enjoyed it thoroughly -- until recently of course.
I think that there should never be talk ever again about establishing rules, and there should never be any reference to Mad Scientists (or whatever title Doc may slip to anyone) being "high ranking" or being akin to any sort of government. It's just a ridiculous thought. I for one (assuming I retain the ability to) will close any thread I find discussing such issues because, like Doc and others have said, I'm disgusted. And I can't stand to read anymore selfserving moronic conversations.
I hope that this strong of a response from Doc serves as enough of a reality check that we can get back to where we once were.
I also regard Doc as a friend, because he has always acted like one. Considering the hundreds of people he has to deal with all day, acting like a friend to such a large group of them accords him a great amount of respect. Unfortunately, too many people around here have not shown him that respect lately.
...so, time for another beer people! who's with me?

Okay, one more time! number of posts only determines a couple of minor changes in the beginning (I think it starts as maniac and then goes to lunatic..?).
Psychotic means you are the moderator of a specific forum.
Mad Scientist means you are a "general moderator" .
The difference is that as the moderator of a specific forum, you have access to the administrative actions only in that forum (closing/moving topics, editing/deleting other peoples posts, archiving).
As a general moderator, you can perform those actions forum-wide. So # of posts has nothing to do with being a Psychotic or a Mad Scientist.

Talk about missing things. I think it would be one of the 4 saddest experiences of my life if this place closed down, all of that collective, raw, thaumaturgical goodness lost, just like that. It should never happen. My life has been totally fucked by suicide, death and stays in hospital and I like this place because, not only does it provide me with a place to post my questions and get meaningful answers, but it gives me somewhere to go where my life dissapears for at least five minutes, and I'm no longer Adrian, I'm Skaarjj, the half bright, half sly, half sober high school student who happens to have some talent for graphics and will work his butt off to get results.
Please, keep this place up, if not for me, or little tommy, then do it for the Gipper.

hmmmm... hello?
did i miss something on the weekend?
i think one of the mad scientists slipped a few too many sleeping pills in my dinner on friday night, cause i woke up this morning, and the weekend was missing, and i missed this thread....
could be a good thing.
but seriously, i have my own contribution to this dicussion, one that i think sheds alot of light on this matter, and should not be over looked:

I don't know what happened.
I care because:
As someone mentioned, there is goodness here. This Information System, organic as it is, must be prone to viri, parasites, hunger, obesity, and more. However, it is up to us, the internal organs, to do all we can to keep it alive.
What is the life expectancy of an Information System? In this day and age, usually pretty short. However, we are still defining the rules about this sort of thing. There is no law that says this I.S. will not exist 40 years from now (though I'm certain evolved to something beyond recognition), but the "brain" (Ozone) and all the other Parts of this system must do their damndest to continue the Whole functioning.
What part am I? I'd be happy just being some obscure gland injecting dopamine from time to time.
Contained within this sentence is an information virus which has just lept from your computer to your brain.

Sorry about that last post...I've calmed down now.
I was serious though.
I think that this thread has gone just about as far as it's puff will take it...any objections to closing it.
