ill dwelll a little more on HOW i got into the biz.
one of my last years of school, i had to make a website for as assessment.
i did. it looked grotesque, took about 3 hours to fully load, but i was soooo damned proud! (got 98% for it too!)
it had applets, mouseovers, pictures, text effects, a guestbook, a movie, sound, home made graphics, and it was a great learning tool.
i loved doing it so much, ive been interested ever since.
then, when i was sent to a company for industry experience in my uni IT course, i did web dev there too. liked it so much, ive been a paid worker ever since, and spending lotsa time at the 'sylum.
so i would say that my 'paid' web design/development has been going for about 9 months, but interest has been about double that.

Ooh, let's see, going by start years where the math gets depressing

Programming: 1975 (Hewlett Packard 2000 mainframe!)
Networking: Same. (120 baud acoustical modems!)
Hacking/cracking: Same same. (heh.)
Art: 40+ years
Computer Graphics: 1983 (Atair 800xl game graphics. Pixels, drawn on graph paper to start!)
Industrial Design: 1982.
Graphic Design: About the same.
Photoshop: 1989-90 or so? Photoshop 2.01
BBS etc: ~1984, then a big gap, then again in early 90's.
Internet: 1992-1993.
(Getting paid for)Web Design: 1994.

I had several big gaps in the 80's when I did no computer stuff at all, period. (Swore off the damn things several times, they interfered with my real love, *art*) By the time the 90's kicked in I was back into it in a big way, doing print design for the screen printing company I worked with, and drawing and printing my own comic books. God, this thread makes me feel old! Thanks Ducati, make the doc feel old now, heh.

Hmmm... Let's see...

Drawing since schooldays - way too many years ago, hm... Been too busy for too many years to actually, really draw something (with traditional tools). I kinda miss the old times.

Photographing since I was 13...

Computers - since Apple II and CP/M-80 boxes back in high school ('79-'82). Bought my first own computer in 1984 (DEC Rainbow 100 with both MS-DOS and CP/M-80 and -86). Programming and stuff... Working as a pc support person for 10 years.

Graphic design since about '87 or something. Print ads, catalogues, club magazines etc.
Web stuff since '93. During the first years (quite a few of them...) can't really call it design - more like putting miscellaneous stuff together... Later (when I had a chance) I started to think about the appearance too...

Photoshop since '96 or '97.

Changed to a different kind of a job in January '98 and haven't done much with WWW since then. Now I have been relearning things almost from the scratch for about 4 months. Things tend to change in three years, you know...

Breathing and babbling incoherently for almost 38 years...

Some of you need to unplug or something, you've been doing this stuff long before I was born. Theres not to much for me to say. I'm not a professional, I just do this stuff for fun. I've always been really good with computers and have been interested in them. I've been into webdesign for probably close to 5 years now, but getting serious with it the last 2. I've been using Photoshop for about the last 2 years and still have much to learn. I've only been using other programs like Illustrator and Flash for about a year and a half. I'm not to sure what I want to do in life, but I'm pretty sure I don't wanna code. I like it more as a hobby, not a job. I masterbate constantly and never drink or smoke. My girlfriends hot, and I'm nice at hockey. Thats my story, take it or leave it.

Just outta curiousity, long before my time, CP/M-80 . What is it?

Got to playing with computers at age 9. Back in the TRS days when the keyboard and monitors were one unit and floppies were 8 inches. Two years later I got my TRS-80 and taught myself BASIC in a few short months. All my friends had C64's and eventually C128's.

Then I upgraded to an Amiga 2000 when they first came out (1988?). Wow! Deluxe Paint 2, 3 and 4. Not to mention Digi-Paint and Digi-Photo. I even got a gen-lock and did some minor animations and sub-titling. One of the coolest things about that gen-lock was that I could use the video-in as a desktop background. And blue screening was awesome as well. That machine fully rocked!

Then support for Amigas plummeted in my area and I got a PC around 1994. I've been doing various web-sites on and off since then. Well, when HTML 2.0 was in full swing and the browser war was starting to really heat up.

I love PS to death, but sometimes I still miss Deluxe Paint 4. I also miss my gen-lock. ::sniff::

Jestah asked:

Somebody correct me if my mind fails me...
CP/M = Control Program for Microcomputers. 80 = Z80, Intel 8080 or similar 8-bit processor. Respectively 86 = Intel 8088 or 8086 (16-bit processor).

CP/M (R.I.P.) was the venerable predecessor of the megalomaniac boot loader that thought of itself as an operating system called MS-DOS. The best thing about CP/M was that it didn't even try to be anything else but a boot loader plus a few functional extensions. Whereas MS-DOS... well... you know the stuff that rolls out of the beast of Redmond...

I'm 28 and have frequently used computers since age 13.

Photoshop since version 3.0, HTML since Mosaic 2.0, and PHP since version 4.0 (like last week?). Honest-to-god programming and serious art studies are my next step.

I started my professional web design job 6 months ago and I've done more learning since then than I have in the past 15 years.

Here's a question I'd like to see asked: How long have you known about DocOzone? Since '97 for me.

PS 10 months. I used PSP for about 5 months before that. My first real experience with computer graphics and basically, graphics of any kind.

HTML/Design. My first web page was a cut and paste horror done about 5 years ago and is what really go me into computers. My first real web page on which I created everything was done last May.

Computers. Got my current machine almost 2 years ago. Its the only PC I or my family have ever owned. We had a Mac Classic once. We weren't exactly well-off so my first real experience with computers were the ones in the computer lab at K-State where I went to college.
