ok people.. what do you do for a living? I know webdesign and stuff like that... but is that all you do? I mean? Do you have your own business? If so, how did you get it started? What were the challenges? |

I have been a computer programmer since 1969. I have been a consultant since 1985. I started consulting because my family and I moved to a small town in southern Indiana where there are no programming opportunities for me and the only way for me to continue to work as a computer programmer was to start consulting with companies in other states. |

Ducati ::: Well, lets be honest with ourselves, shall we? Based off of my experience and years in the field, I warrant a very large salary. I don't demand it. I love what I do, and that's all that I want to do. |

After several years of tech-support, networking, and sloppy web design freelancing, I finally landed a great job at a small Internet Media company. I do "web design" but my primary job is to be creative. I'm striving to become better at what I do, because I do repect this profession highly and understand how much talent and hard work it takes to be good at it. A lot of my work involves less creativity right now than I would lke - a lot of my time involves processing large web sites as efficiently as possible and maintaining our reputation as this area's key online resource for local content. I also design a lot of banners which we sell on our media sites. |

Lemme see I fell into this ass backwards. I studied audio production in college and that got me a good gig tending bar and waiting tables while doing scut work at a couple of local studios for free. So I decided to get a "real" job and started doing Tech Support at Electronic Arts where after a couple of months I fell into the job of maintaining their tech support website. Jumped to Excite@Home for a while for some big bucks, hated it. Left after 3 months and took a job at teechtv as a Production Assistant in their web group (for 2/3 the dough) A year later I was the Senior Production Engineer (and making 2.5x what I started at). I'm still here but because a bit of a "reorg" (layoffs) I'm now jumping over to being our lead (and only) interactive TV developer. It's a brand new technology working with different settop boxes and technologies like worldgate, wink, and AOL TV. But a lot of it is web based and I'll be working on integrating our existing web content system to be able to write docs for TV. Pretty cool stuff. I'm also cleaning up our XML based content syndication system. |

Some people are beginning to sound like elitist jerks. Every designer has to start from somewhere and if you were offering words of encouragement instead of put downs, Ducati may develop into the type of UberDesigner you all claim to be. |

Question for any and all. Any good ideas on how I might just get a glimpse of how the design biz runs? I mean like volunteering or co-op and stuff like that. Do design companies look, for people willing to work but not looking for money because they're just trying to learn the trade? Would I be dreaming to think that this stuff might be possible? I love all this stuff and I really want to look into doing it for a living, so any ideas even on where to look to get started? |

uhmm... My job is to keep some of you folks employed I guess.... I work as a marcoms manager at a HW-company, but we do not have any coders/designers in-house, so we use agencies... (works great job for me! I'm no expert coder nor a PS god, but I've been PS'ing and coding for some time, which greatly simplifies my realtionship with our agency and the people there). |
