I ain 't workin' at my job anymore....I quit my job of three and a half years. Wish me luck in my search for new employment!

Good luck... it may take a bit more effort with the current situation. People are looking for junior developers more than senior developers... I don't know how that will affect you. If you are going for the front end shin-dig... well I don't know about those jobs, but I bet you will find something worth while soon!

my company's IT department has been fighting with the Sales and Marketing department over who should own me...and I'm really tired of all the political bullshit that I've been in the middle of.

I'm going to aim for a job as a graphics designer (web/print) or if I have to I'll fall back on my skill as a desktop analyst.

Be afraid, boudga. Be very afraid. The market is saturated with graphic artists.

Lets be honest here, kids. There are, quite literally, millions of designers in the market right now, all vying for the same positions at the same jobs. Good designers are being passed up for mediocre ones (based, mostly, off of how much money each is worth and each is asking) and thousands of people are out of work because of it.

I'm not saying this is a bad thing. This has nothing to do with the eCommerce year that we had, things blowing up left and right, but it does have a lot to do with the fact that the boom created a boom for designers. Everyone, it seems, is a graphic artist or a web developer these days. I almost find myself blushing when I have to mention to someone in a coffeeshop or something, that I am a graphic artist. They know who they are, and they know what I do. Well, they don't. The conception is, however, that we're a dime-a-dozen, and we can be replaced without too much thought.

Ten years ago? Not nearly the saturation. Today it exists. You want encouragement, get into fast food--most people are polite enough, these days, to say "thanks" to the folks in the drive-through.

I think the market for everything is saturated right now -
Funny, I've had eight jobs in the industry, and at the last four, they needed a designer, but they didn't have one!

A sad fallacy of human nature: Everyone thinks they have good taste -- Fact is, there are VERY few Boudga's or Doc's or Bugimis's out there - If there were, we'd ALL have bad-ass web pages. Show me an employee trying to gett a corporate exec's to realize they have (shudder) AVERAGE artistic taste, and I'll show you an employee on the road to nowhere.

In fact, most headhunters don't know how to hire them, either -
How can you quantify artistic ability?

If I write on my resume "...designed, wrote, managed project involving 300,000 lines of java utilizing J2EE, blah blah blah...) that carries more weight than showing a stunning web page using 3D modelling.

So companies usually do it "internally" - and it usually turns into a farce... I should know, I've presided over a few :-)

As always, the problem is market timing-
I believe the market will turn, and more and more artistry will enter the profession. Stay tuned.

You guys all need to go to your local new book store and buy a book entitled, "Who Moved My Cheese". It's a very short book to read and highly motivational. I encourage anyone who has any fear of quitting their job to buy it and read it!!!

Yeah... we had to read that book at work as a requirement. Pretty good book.
