The planetary locator is open for business. (IE only, sorry).

If you'd like to be added, to make it as easy on me as possible, please post in this thread with your latitude and longitude in decimal format (no minutes or seconds please) with no more than two decimal places necessary. Negative latitudes are south, and negative longitudes are west.

If you'd like a little help finding your coordinates, try this widget out.

For example:
'linear', 38.97, -94.67 would be my entry.
I will include anyone who cares to submit their coordinates.

Technical notes: this will only run in IE due to extensive use of the innerHTML method. Damn near the entire document is generated by the scripts. Netscrape will just show you a pretty map of the world. This uses the Mercator coordinate transformations I posted in the earlier thread. There was one sign error in the code as posted, so if you are interested, please refer to the updated code in this version.

It does need a zoom feature, or at least a larger map. I wanted to see how things shook out with as many inmates as possible before tweaking up. Interestingly, the code will work for any size map. There are three constants that define the map, and as long as the aspect ratio remains the same, the map can be freely resized. The current gif is 30k, and I didn't want to make it larger without a good reason.

Since this is a 1600 pixel wide map, and the earth is about 8000 miles in circumference at the equator, the pixels are 5 mile squares (at the equator).
