Anyone ever used GoLive? This program is seriously messed up. Of course, I have to teach it tomorrow.

I kicked FrontPage's ass yesterday. Dreamweaver is in about a month.

Yeeeeehawwwwwwwww.

...GoLive.

Two words, brought together to form a product title. Lets examine them both, shall we?

Go
---
Webster defines it as 1) To move or travel; proceed, 2) To move away from a place; depart, 3) To pursue a certain course 4) To function properly. Lets examine just #4 for a moment. Does it function properly? Since the other half is "Live," it doesn't function properly, because it inserts exterraneous stuff and makes me sad to see. That notwithstanding, the FTP capabilities to make it "live," leave a great deal to be desired. So, it has failed in it's purpose.

~cough~

And it's a silly, silly program.

i made some sites with GoLive half a year ago, or so.
hmmm. it's not that bad i think. of course it lacks some features but it handles html-attributes very well! and also the dhtml/js parts are kinda cool! rollovers, layer-movements with just a few klicks.

if not GoLive, what other professional editor do you use? (and dont come up with frontpage now ) (ok, i would accept dreamweaver )

edit: : mad : )

Edit Plus.

GoLive is exactly what twitch said. Although, the little point and shoot arrow is fun to play with for a while.

I've never used GoLive but I heard it was an alright program. I imagine most of the WYSIWYG editors are about the same anyway. I mean they all do and don't do the same things. As far as control over the code goes ... well it's not done by hand so what do you expect?

Actually, the three I have been prepping to teach so far are completely different. They use different terminology, different menus, and different interfaces.

GoLive and Dreamweaver are remotely similar in design but completely different in functionality.

If I was going to use one of them I would definitely go with Dreamweaver.

Being forced to use Dreamweaver at worked kind of pissed me off, but after working with it for a year, and really learning the ins and outs, I am quite impressed. For example, most people don't know that the way it formats HTML tags can be specified precisely via a style-sheet like textfile where you can specify whether a tag is indented, how many line breaks it has before and after the opening and closing tags, and specify groups of tags to share these behaviours. You can also control what an indent is (tabs or spaces, and how many) as well as many other formatting attributes.

Combine this with it's BBEdit/Homesite integration, whereby u can edit a file simultaneously in a robust text-based HTML editor alongside Dreamweaver, and you get literally the best of both worlds. Ever had to edit Frontpage-mangled code? Now you can visually see what it's supposed to look like, select an element, then click over to BBEdit and since the code is selected, you can easily figure out which opening tags match which closing tags etc. Cleaning up code with one or the other was never this smooth.

As a matter of fact, with proper configuration DW is near perfect at code-preservation. I am actually in contact with their tech people right now to try to get one little feature added: That is preservation of indentation. Even though you can define the exact formatting, sometimes the cleanest way to code doesn't follow set-in-stone rules. Unfortunately DW indents any element you edit according to the entire document... All it needs to do is never mess with existing indentation, and when creating new elements indent them relative to the previous element.

If they incorporate this into the next version, I'll be able to code faster than any purist AND keep the formatting as anal-retentive as it gets.

I have used GoLive for 3 years.........and i use GoLive to build code like non artist use Photoshop to help with pictures.

I am not a coder.......i know html thats it....so GoLive allows me to play with dhtml and javascript without having to know the language..........maybe its not perfect but it still allows me....who could care less about code to actually build code with point and shoot...........i love it myself.

So true to you purist.....GoLive sucks.....but to us non-purist its a GOD send..............thank you very much.

Kretz...GoLive is a great program for us...........you know.....the brain dead ones......:-)

lol Doc.

Kretz, of course I know the menu's and interfaces are different. I was getting at the general features of all the WYSIWYG editors. I have both FrontPage 2000 (which came with my computer) and Dreamweaver(which I got for Christmas, I forget from who) and they have the same features. I can pretty much do anything I really needed to in either editor, but I like using CrankPad cause it looks cooler

Um, there is a random image on the front page of that site, probably one of his 3d mock-ups or something. Click on in and take a look around. I don't know what image you saw, but he has done such things as the background for the ping-pong tournament scene in Forrest Gump and an Ice T album cover. Working on projects like that I imagine he's making a little more than $10 a pop.

BTW, I don't know where you're coming from with 'no money in computer graphics' theory. Computer Graphics & Animation is some of the best paying work around these days...

Um Doc, I would imagine the boy gets paid more for those images than most conventional artists get paid in a lifetime.

Some of those images are matte paintings for movie sets. You know, little movies you might have never heard of, like Forrest Gump. $$$$$ Some of them are album covers for CDs by little known artists such as Ice Cube.

But you're right, he probably only got paid about $10 a pop for those...
